He was pick 57 as I recall: not a huge risk but potentially a steal.

Fot the first time he has an opportunity to show the club, himself, and both supporters and skeptics here what he is actually worth.

Sounding like a cracked record (for our younger readers that means one of those flat discs which preceded tapes, CDs, iPods, clouds or whatever etc as music media, prone to cracking or scratching, causing repeats, repeats, repeats etc etc etc) but only time will tell.   

I feel that prejudging him as a flop, dud, spud, or on the other hand a gun, superstar is just a tad premature.

Didn't read the whole thread. But George talking about Hunt's possession count playing small forward in an OK VFL team off a limited pre-season are miles off the mark. 12 is heaps for a small forward with pace.

And with a first full pre-season, he should play around the middle and have the opportunity to win more ball by exploiting his athleticism up and down the ground. For the first time since he has been on the list, he'll be able to get to multiple consecutive contests and that will drive up his possie count.

I have no idea if he can make it. But for the first time, we will be able to make informed decisions based on his output on game day.

12 is not heaps for a small forward. Out of the 7 senior games he played that game was the highest possession tally he got. He only averaged about 8 disposal a game. Also If your going to be a small forward you need to have good forward pressure and tackling and again out of 7 games he only had 11 tackles with 2 games where he didn't register a tackle at all.

He has a long way too go. Even if he does have a full pre season i just cannot see him making an impact at senior level.

I've got no problems with him being given the opportunity, I'm just a bit surprised there's so many fawning over a guy who is yet to play a game after 2 years.

You don't think saying he'll be "competing for a spot with Stretch and ANB", or he'll "light up the afterburners out of the back line, leaving opponents in his wake and then pump it hard into the forward 50" is a little bit overboard for a guy who has yet to play a game after 2 years?

Surely you're not just having a crack because it's me saying people were being a bit "over the top" and "fawning"...? You wouldn't be that shallow would you? Hmmmm....

I don't see why you're trying to suck the jam out of everyone's donut about this guy.

You admit that you've not seen him play but are only too ready to hose down his chances of getting a game.

He's recovered from injury, has an AFL body and the coaches are excited by what he can offer the team.

But hey, let's put him the Sam Blease category because it's an easy comparison.

I'm not bagging the guy out, I like his speed and he seems like a ripper bloke, but I'm trying to be realistic about a guy who was pick 57 and hasn't played a senior game in 2 years.

Just think some of the expectations are getting a bit out of hand.

Hasn't even earned a call up yet but people are already expecting him to burn off AFL level opponents and challenge guys (Stretch, ANB) who played 11 games each last year for a spot.

Stretch and ANB playing 11 games is exactly why Hunt is a chance to play! I hope it's tougher this year, but last year it didn't exactly take a heap to get a game. 

Certainly Hunt has a lot to prove, but he's a lot closer now than last year I think due to his body shape and having completed much more training. Sadly on the back of a few good games he was Casey's top goal scorer, hopefully he can step us his game and still keep kicking goals.

The point about Stretch and ANB was some were suggesting Hunt would be challenging them for the same spots, which I think is an unrealistic expectation given both of them played half the games last year and Hunt is yet to debut. Great point about the sub rule though. Combined with the interchange restriction the game is going to be changed (again) next year and will effect a fair few different areas, one of which is the sub being a debutant. Roos has been a big fan of bringing players that way and it would seem like the perfect role for Hunt, so it's bad timing for him in that way.

You would have to suggest that if Stretch and ANB are vying for the same spot and now Hunt is putting his hand up to compete in their position - Hunt would be third in line until he has exposed form that would have him leapfrog the other two.

I always thought we recruited Hunt with the understanding and likelihood of at least two years development before he'd be physically ready to step up, but he had the tools (pre-growth spurt) to be a genuine AFL player.

The club keeping him and now the good words on him only confirm that this plan is coming along nicely.

I thinks clubs (and Our club!) have realised that some kids take longer to develop and if you can see the talent and nurture the talent, they might not bloom till they're 20+, but when they do they'll be solid (maybe even more).

I put Smith Jnr in similar development strategy/category, where we'd hope he'd be ready in a year or two...

Not sure that is fair comparison - Hunt was a young project player who was always going to take some time to develop (we can all argue how long you give a player to develop) - Melksham was brought in ready to go from day one with the caveat being the unknown on how long he was going to get suspended for. I would suggest that we rolled the dice on the length of the suspension and basically got it wrong. I am not convinced that with the benefit of hindsight and knowledge of the length of the suspension, Melksham would be on our list.

Still think expectations need to be tempered. Even if his first year was going to be this year, he's still a pick 57, let's all calm down a bit.

Sam Blease had a poor attitude and work ethic. Not sure his case is a valid predictor of Jayden's chances.
