Bad luck for O'Meara as he is out for the rest of the season.

Reminds me of when Jonno Patton was going to leave GWS (rumoured to go to WB), was injured and signed up with Giants almost immediately.  The suitor got cold feet.

O'Meara may be in the same boat and will sign up with GCS soon.  Unless, he is doing a 'Scully' has his deal all signed up and is now protecting himself against further injury.

Its a shame really, O Meara is an incredible player.  His first two seasons are as good as any you will ever see for an 18-20 year old.  Or for any age really.  Kid is a jet.

Will clubs outside of the 8 be willing to take the risk and throw cash at one of them in the hope they come good?

You get the feeling that ones that are desperate enough (like the Tigers) will plonk down stupid cash to land one as a 'marquee' signing, only to watch them struggle through each season managing their injuries.

I know Roos has said he won't have any say in offseason list management, but do you think his "Dangerfield" comment recently hinted at us trying to land a big fish this trade period? Would one of these guys fit that?

Just those two words 'big fish' remind me of the thread on the Drafting and trading board last season when we had supposedly landed one...  all the excitement around Luke Parker possibly coming to the MFC.

Speaking of which - cant wait for the draft and trading board to re-open. Bring on the silly season, the excitement, the rumours and the inevitable let downs!

Yeah I was pretty much ready for that to open after the Saints game... ;)

I think we've been looking for a big fish for a long time.  If we finish the season pretty well and there is someone out there, then I would give us an outside chance of landing one.  We might have to be content with a few recruits who are not of the Dangerfield level but are still handy recruits who can improve our depth further and, hopefully, become best 22.

I would still consider O'Meara but obviously after an extensive medical check up.

The Dogs (Gordon) panicked into the Boyd trade when Patton was the one they needed.

...a bit of due diligence wouldn't go astray by us here.

I am personally hoping we have a big fish already on our list, Oliver, Hogan, Brayshaw, weideman.... I would rather develop our own stars, trying to land a high priced one from somewhere else will be very difficult for us.

However if there is a Shaun Burgoyne equivalent available this year, let's go for it.

The Suns will want either a top 10 pick and a player or two first rounders for Jaeger who is seriously injury prone, it's the sort of punt Hawthorn can take, we can't afford the risk, nomatter how good the reward.

It sure beats looking for it after round one.

We do and he wears number 5.

Hoping for 1,5,7,10 and 29 to be big fish in 2 years.

You've hit the nail on the head, Earl.  Sums up exactly how I feel.

I like the analogy with Shaun Burgoyne.  Surrounding these kids with more good, experienced players is something I hope we can do over the off season.  As the season has progressed it's evident that some of our older players (Dunn, Grimes, Garland etc.) aren't up to it like we hoped they might be, so we probably need to look elsewhere to fill that gap.

1 could be anything.

7 is already one of our best.

10 has had 2nd year blues with injury but he has it and will be a very good player for us.

29 is my boy and will get better, with another pre season while knowing he is in the team.

What else can I say?  I stuck by him last season and felt he deserved another deal, but I can't argue or deny how he has played this year.  It hasn't been up to scratch.  Do I hope he can find some of his earlier form from years gone by?  Of course.  Doesn't mean I think that will happen though.

Boyd will end up a better footballer than Patton. If he's not already.

The mistake the Dogs made was not backing themselves in the draft and taking 2m Peter. He's as good as those other two, far healthier than Patton and far cheaper than Boyd.

Agree with those saying we need to retain the talent we have worked so hard to get in the past 3 years and try not to lose the essentials (eg TMac & Jesse). I expect a quieter trade period this year, mainly because he haven't got the chips we had previously (oops, non intended pun). Our ins already will include Melksham and injury affected returnees Salem, JKH, Van der, Brayshaw etc,  as well as natural development from a heap of very talented <21yo's.

We are regularly the youngest team playing each week.  It's been a magnificent strategic plan and direction created by Roos and Jackson the development coaches. Buy what we can on the High Street that will help the team without breaking the bank but consolidation is the focus now rather than big names.

I've been pretty much on the develop from within thinking for the past few years under Roos but I now think the time is right to land some real quality to add to the list.

We should have plenty in the bank to cover us.

We haven't got the picks so who do we lose that's got currency but won't damage our plans?

We've been pretty creative, and ahead of the game over the last few years so lets wait & see what currency if any Mahoney & his crew might be able to conjure up.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
