saw smith joining in on the marking drill when i rocked up today.. he was really competitive. strong in the upper body, i saw jade rawlings encouraging him to use better technique to push off and guard the drop zone. looked way better than i was expecting! tom mac & melksham killed the marking drill though. matt jones tried really hard. for only a little tacker he went ok.. melksham outmarked tom on one occasion though. he'll be good for us next year.

Thus the need for mids, mids, mids and more mids. All very well people trying for nearest to the pin on the first 22, but we'll be doing well if we ever get that first 22 on the ground at once, let alone keeping them there for the season.

A list of players he will be competing with for that 3rd rotation - Kennedy, Bugg, Melksham, Petracca, Salem, AVB, Alex Neal-Bullen, Michie, and possibly Trengove. IMO its not too early to suggest Newton is up against it to maintain a spot on the list, he doesn't need any setbacks at all, he can't afford them. This is a good thing for MFC, our depth - at least through our midfield - is improving, and players will have to stay on the park in order to perform/keep their position, or in Newtons case, to even consolidate a position.

A severe ankle sprain is 8-12 weeks according to Dr Google.

I'm guessing torn ligaments and a severe ankle sprain are a similar injury.

10 weeks would have him fully training about late Jan??

Suffered reasonably bad damage to ankle ligaments and tendons as a young bloke ( 30 odd years ago ) and recovery was a slow process.

3 - 4 months before it was able to be comfortably weight bearing and able to resume any sport and all this time later it still gives me trouble.

Hoping for a quicker recovery for his sake.

Footy is a particularly bad sport to play with a bung ankle. I did one a couple of seasons ago and every time it felt right to go I'd give it an extra couple of weeks before actually kicking a ball. Each time I got back into it too early and re-did it with the first kick. So frustrating.

I'm sure Trenners is being managed much better than I was. My injury didn't have anything to do with the bone, either. It was purely ligament issues.

Same here. Playing in a game the day after the '87 Prelim. Split up with the gorgeous girlfriend the night before. She couldn't understand how I could get so upset about a stupid game of sport. That one was going no where. Not the best weekend I've ever had.

Snapped my foot off in that game. Had 9 bolts put in to put the ankle back together. Not pretty. Newton won't be anything like that. Trenners had a foot problem not ankle and many have recovered from his injury. His problem was it wasn't diagnosed for too long. Lost a couple of years. Then had a set back last year. We'll know by the end of the preseason whether he's going to be ok or not. If there's a problem with the foot it won't take long to become evident.

My Brother was there and commented on vandenBerg looking trim, taut and terrific. He was leading his running group.

This time last year he was walking laps with his arm in a sling.

I heard a few weeks ago (second hand) that the club was very happy with the condition he came back from the break in. It's all anecdotal stuff but it tells the same story. Exciting stuff.

One of the best things about rookie picks/late picks is that they're often incredibly determined and strive to get the absolute best out of themselves. Much different than a lot of early picks (think Morton, Gysberts, Sylvia, etc).

Very excited to see the heights that Vanders can reach.
