Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The song is an American marching song that's an ode to their flag - the 'stars and stripes'...

We adapted it to suit ourselves.

We can do it again if we wish to.

The song was from a play and was written in the early 1900's. Yes it is patriotic towards the american flag, yes it comes from America, but it is not steeped in military marching history over there so why not use it. The Hawks have the even more american Yankee Doodle as there theme song and you don't see them about to change it.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we change the song/tune. The only suggestion as far as I can tell is to add the word 'Melbourne' to the lyrics. Is that so bad?

R u a dogs support rpfc??

Wrong forum mate!!

The song's original words were about the US flag.

We changed it to suit ourselves.

If we change our logo at the drop of a hat - a very good looking hat - then why can't we shoehorn Melbourne in there?

Because logos, graphics etc change with the times. Music is music. If it's done right the first time, why mess with it.

What would the point be of putting Melbourne in the song? We sing it proudly as is.

Because people don't know it's about the Melbourne Football Club? What are newbies coming here and picking sheets of paper with theme songs on them out of a hat to choose a team? If this was common practise I'd say yeah, maybe there's an argument.

Putting Melbourne in the song would make no difference to anything, it's just change for changes sake and unnecessary in my opinion.

There's been a positive response to the new MFC logo launch.

Here's a Caroline Wilson written article from last year highlighting working towards a new logo featuring "Melbourne" prominently. Bartlett also makes mention about the need for 'Melbourne' in our theme song.

What's the general feeling among D'Landers about alterations or re-makes to our song?

its a must. the words do not have the required positive affirmations, as the hawks song does.

we need to rejig the lyrics to be more about the club; 'team'; the players; & us, the supporters;

the tune should stay, but the words need some re-organising.

Back to bed now DL...."Drink your Coco"

and leave the song alone...Fallen MFC Players have won flags with that song...even in this modern world some continuity should be honoured

I'm not fussed either way.

However, if they were hell bent on changing it I see a subtle opportunity by replacing, "it's the emblem for me and for you" with "it's the emblem for you and for me" then following it up with something like (purely an example) "it's the emblem of the team we love, the team of the old MFC".

Yes, I know, this is potentially cringeworthy to some but remember we have just moulded our new logo around the MFC monogram.

Anyway, this is just thinking out aloud. If they do change it I hope it is as subtle as possible otherwise leave it alone.

"the team we love"

We, being the supporters, love the [censored] team.

To the tune of Waltzing matilda

We invented football down in old Yarra park

under the shade of a coolibah tree

and we sing and we watch and we've waited for a premiership

to flamin' long if you flamin' ask me

All that needs to be done (and this could be optional) is insert Melbourne (chanted) in the gap at the end of each pair - that would work without compromising the lyrical/musical integrity of the song:

It's a grand old flag it's a high flying flag,
It's the emblem for me and for you, (Mel - bourne)
It's the emblem of the team we love,
The team of the red and the blue, (Mel - bourne)

etc etc

Nah, but think of all those people that will be convinced to follow Melbourne if the song has the name in it.

I would say just as many that will support it because of our rebrand...

So are you arguing for or against changing it?

Some trivia for the trivia minded: I learned recently that the same person wrote both 'Its a Grand Old Flag' and 'Yankee Doodle'. Not sure that I want to think about that too much, but there you go ...

I will burn down the MCG and salt the earth if they change the song.

That's a fairly rational reaction to change there Gorg.

How would you feel if we had a new James Blunt reworking in a ballad style?

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
