This week footage on A Current Affair emerged of Jake Carlisle apparently snorting a line of white substance and now the story of two of the Brisbane men charged over the rape during an Australia Day party being members of the Brisbane Lions academy squad - Lawyer for one of four alleged Australia Day rapists says incident was a youthful prank

I don't think we can discuss the case while it's before the court but I wonder if this is going to affect the upcoming draft?

From what I can make of it, the players involved are 19 or 20, have been overlooked in the draft before, and will be overlooked again. So, I don't think it will have any impact on the draft. No doubt the Brisbane 'culture' will come into question again though.

I don't think the AFL are having a bad run, I just think that to date - they have had a good run. A lot of incidents get covered up, either by club or league. Now social media is firmly entrenched into society, I expect there will be far more incidents. AFL players are under a lot of pressure, IMO it is unrealistic to expect them all to act 'proper'. Issues of rape, assault, drugs, gambling, alcohol, domestic violence - these are all broader societal issues, and AFL players are not immune them. That isn't to justify their behavior in the slightest, they should be held accountable like the rest of us, but I am never surprised to hear of these types of incidents, sportsman are human like the rest of us.

How many members of society are well behaved at all times? Certainly not all. IMO it is unrealistic to expect AFL players to be any different.

In some cases, I wonder why I still follow AFL football when you consider some of the attitudes that seem so prevalent amongst the leading opinion makers of the code and a subsection of it's players.

Francis Leach was right in his article that it's becoming a redneck wonderland when you take into account the unashamed sexism, racism and lack of decency abounding from some supporters and players of the code.

That being said, the key word in this debate is 'some'. The AFL is improving on some fronts and that gives me hope. Not all supporters as well are grade A Reg Reagan meatheads either and that gives me hope. It seems though that the days of 'Boris the chicken' are still with us in regards to attitudes towards women with AFL players.

It is absolutely realistic to expect these players not to rape people, assault people, or be violent towards their partners. That is the standard set in society, it is never acceptable. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen but it is not acceptable in society full stop. To brush it off as unrealistic to expect this standard is abhorrent and part of the issue of violence against women and the attitudes of society towards women. You are basically excusing their behavior because others do it. The rest of your comment makes sense but this bit is wrong, it may be the way it is worded but it is the wrong message.

I didn't intend on associating the word 'proper' - with rape, assault, drugs, etc. When I referred to proper, I just meant acceptable behavior (a proper of decent way of conducting themselves). Its just those other issues (rape, DV, drugs) came in the next sentence.
