Resilience - MFC Players V MFC Supporters (Merged Thread)

That sort of support is not the problem, it is the overt over the top absolute negativity that has no basis in fact or reason that is the problem. As rpfc pointed out, people still blame Watts and thing he should be gone, even though he is now doing what we wanted him to do, and some are calling for blood. We are too negative, we are too reactionary, we don't take time to consider what is going on, and we take it out on all and sundry, it would be having an effect, even if small.

Fair call Chris there are no doubt, levels of negativity that are unacceptable.

If we had a winning culture and performed like Hawthorn they would probably still be whingeing. I would love that problem at MFC.

I don't think we should do what the media does and misrepresent the facts.

Roos said that the club has a veil of negativity around it.

Also that many supporters were negative in emails to him.

He never blamed supporters for the performances.

He agreed the last few weeks and especially sunday were terrible and unacceptable.

He said the football department needed to fix these inconsistent performances and that they were trying to.

"It's not that I'm angry about the emails I get, but I just think it's very negative. I completely understand how our supporters must feel, but you just have to wonder.

"If supporters are telling you they are expecting to lose driving to the game, there's no doubt there's a vibe that must rub off on at least a small group of players. That's just something they [the players] have got to get over. I'm sick of talking about it."

Roos compared the negative vibe around Melbourne to the long-time stigma carried by Richmond for finishing ninth.

If our feelings as supporters rubbed off on players, our players would have beaten goddamn North Melbourne by now, and flattened Brent Harvey in the process.

How we feel and think as a supporter group should have nothing to do with player performance. We turn up every week and we cheer as loud as anyone when we win.

We also express our displeasure when we lose, but compared to other supporters, we are mild. I don't see our supporters spitting and giving our players the fingers when they lose. We also rarely boo the team, and boy do they deserve to be booed from time to time for their disgusting lack of effort.

I wonder how our players would feel if they played for Richmond or Collingwood and were on the type of losing streak we've been on. They wouldn't be able to walk down the street without being "veiled by negativity".

I find the whole idea completely dumb, and I think Roos has run out of excuses, so he's using supporter mindset. He knows he can't blame the past anymore and that ultimately he is responsible. He is responsible for lifting moral and changing the negative mindset within the club. Then watch our quickly supporters change from negative to positive!

That is not blaming the fans for losses.

That is a part of the 'scar' argument that most on here attested to being true and our now sick of talking about - which happens to the last thing you have quoted Roos to have said.

He is sick of talking about the scars of the past, and yet when he sneers at our attitude - what do we bring up? The last decade, the last 50 years.

We are the ones stuck in the awful past.

The present isn't great but we are attaching that awful past ourselves - not Roos.

I don't think Roos is playing the fans, or blaming anyone. I think he's just making an observation that is very obvious and, unfortunately, very true.

I have said multiple times on here that there is a stigma attached to playing for Melbourne. When you're growing up, and out in public, hearing people talk, neutral fans know Melbourne is bad. That sort of narrative is interchangeable with Melbourne fans because Melbourne fans are equally as negative about the club.

I don't think he is blaming fans any more than he's blaming the players. It must truly be tough playing for the Demons, knowing so few people respect you. This creates distance, individualism, as a means of trying to show the world that, "Okay, so at least I'm okay." This is why I'm critical of Nathan Jones: I don't think he's particularly inspiring, and I think he goes through the motions to stand out amongst the crap. That doesn't make him a good leader. It makes him a "loser" in the true sense of the word, not someone that is particularly driven to win. He just does what *he* can do. Make a good leader, that does not.

The scary thing is I see this weep through our younger players already. Brayshaw, Viney, Watts, VB, Hogan. They go through periods of ineptness and "ME ME ME" as a means to look decent in a bad loss. Roos has mentioned this after loses where the players play a game as individuals, not as a team. This all correlates into what he's saying.

And I have said it once and I'll say it again: until older players from the Bailey and Daniher years are gone, that veil among the playing group will remain. A new generation now needs to set the tone, not "leaders" who were part and parcel of the club's worst ever years.

It's astonishing how some can't see the correlation between how bad we play, and how bad the likes of Dunn, Watts, Jones, Garland, Grimes can be.

Hey we lost to Carlton twice in 2005 when they were shithouse and cost us a better finals berth

We expect to lose because THE CLUB HAS LET US DOWN for so long

Tell it like it is Paul. Do not back down

The first two lines were correct.

We were looking at nailing a top4 spot and got rolled by the bottom side carlton at etihad.

The 3rd your losing the plot again.

As you tend to do.

Roos has just FU here trying to cover his own arse and you're cheering him on.

Jack was tracking along nicely until Schwab changed his number, made the video

Grimes never played well again apart from that one punch....

Should have kept his own number...identity.

Seriously WYL. Seriously. Even for you this is silly.

44 wins out of 196 games across 9 seasons. a 22.4% win ratio.

that'd be why we are negative...

Roos is responsible for a maximum of 34 of those losses...

Why are losses in 2007 so relevant to our mindset?

The reaction of Demonland is largely proving his point.

I want the MFC to actually face and confront their own faults rather than putting the blame elsewhere which is why they are never fixed.

Not silly at all. Schwab wanted to make Jack Grimes the "new" Barassi amid great song and dance. The result was Grimes career become very ordinary

creating little messiah's will not win us games...

I don't see how confronting faults helps the win/loss column.
I don't see any other clubs need to confront their faults.
They need to confront the playing list.
Thats who they need to confront.

It's a point that many here have chosen to ignore as they hurry off to get the sackcloth and ashes to indulge in a jolly good bout of self-flagellation. "Oh no - Roosey's blaming us"

Spot on. I've got no problem with what he said on Monday. I agree. The Tuesday damage control was messy though. But his original point is right. There is an negative air about MFC. Justifiably so as many have pointed out. But we are loyal. We have stuck through thin and thinner. But I reckon I see progress and this gives me cause for optimism for 2016 and onward

Really disappointed with some of the carp that comes out of our coaches mouth.

He blames everyone and everything except himself.

He said that even after the Geelong win people were coming up to him and saying, well you'll never do that again.

What a load of rubbish....after the Geelong win most of us were rapt and saying how great things were looking and hoping we had turned the corner.

Believe us Roosy when we tell you, we do not want to be negative at all, in fact we are sick to our stomachs of being negative....please please please, give us a reason to be positive, like win a couple of games in a row, or beat a bottom side, at least.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
