Has Bernie Vince become our best player?

Viney played his best game ever today. Easily. But Vince was still better. And Jones was brilliant, having started off slowly (poor disposal efficiency early on). Then there's Brayshaw's game. My god. So excited by our midfield group at the moment. Imagine if Tyson really starts to find some form. Gawn makes such a difference to this group. Even Spencer too.

In answer to the OP, I'd say Bernie is our most important player at the moment. He proved it today. The game is won in the midfield. Hogan is going to be the forward of his generation, but right now, Bernie is our best.

serious question - when was the last time any demon picked up 110 possessions in 3 weeks? I can't remember anyone going anywhere near those type of numbers..

The closest I can recall would be Nathan Jones last 3 weeks - 101 disposals

I reckon Bernie's first three or four games for us were high 30 possession games.

In my time anyway, melbourne's never really had huge accumulators of the ball.

We've had damaging midfielders, but not ones pulling in the massive numbers that bernie has been the last month.

Bernie is an excitement machine. Great skills but plays for the team. He inspires his team mates and is a team lifter at important times. Damn good looking as well. Best pick-up that I can remember.

Genuine love for this bloke.

Playing himself into all Autralian contention, his last three weeks have been elite, bloody enormous!

Great personality and much adored by the fans, what a pick up!

My kids love Bernie.

It's great to have some players that the kids can get excited about. Its been a hard few years keeping the kids interested and its super important we continue to improve....The younger players coming through are just as exciting and the kids are over the moon.

Agree 100% especially about the good looking bit. Sigh - if only I was 20 years younger.

As a few on here have argued before, why play "just a tagger". It's becoming a defunct role. Everyone must be accountable.

Roos said that last night, which I take as the death knell for Jordie ....a guy with a huge heart and amazing work ethic but sadly NQR skills for today's game. Still, every young aspiring player could take a leaf out of Jordie's book for getting the best out of themselves through hard work and dedication to the task. He has given his all in every game he played for us.

It's difficult to believe Vince had ZERO pre-season and is playing the way he is. Either he's a freak or pre-seasons are overrated. Maybe both.

Imagine if the guy who we essentially swapped for him had a preseason ---- could have been an absolute gun.

I think it's clear that when we picked up Bernie, we knew he was an good player whose best years may've been behind him. Saying that, he's easily exceeded all of our expectations and become an even greater recuit than any of us could ever have dreamed of.

Bernie Vince will win our Best and Fairest this year and may carve himself a sneaky position in the AA squad if he continues this run of form.

It is just so good having another person to help out jones. Thankyou col for leaving melbourne and letting us get pick 21 to get this superstar. Best thing you ever did for us.

I think his relationship with Goodwin has been central to his current form.

Also I bet he has been a huge influence on Viney and Brayshaw - they both have been playing similar roles and Bernie is a great exemplar.

Also he is a fun sort of guy to have around the club. Very important to have an extrovert that knows how to let off steam within boundaries and lift the atmosphere.

He's an all round gem and cudos to the recruiters who made the deal happen.

Vince's last month has been insanely good.

I love how he (and Viney too, it seems) can negate an opponent and get huge possession counts themselves. Last week Vince held Armitage to his lowest possession count for the year and had a bunch of it himself, then Viney did the same thing to Selwood (equal lowest for him this year).

It's a great asset to have in our midfield.

I'm also hugely excited about how Vince, Viney, Jones, Tyson, Brayshaw and Toumpas are now going to get to play games together as a unit, learn from one another and how to gel as a clique. Yesterday showed what happens when you dominate through the middle.

Then Petracca and Trengove back in the mix

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
