Training - Friday 12th June, 2015

Bit cold so got there at around 1030 & left after 40 mins. Interestingly numbers were really low..24 or 25 players only. Thought there might have been a tragic bus accident on the way to training! Realised after a little while that it was only the squad for Sun that seemed to be out there.

I was told that there were a couple of others out there earlier but they'd gone by the time I arrived - except Spencer. Anyway, on reflection, it makes sense to try some practice with only the people you'll be playing with, I guess.

Also noteworthy, I thought, was Goodwin pairing up JW & Toumpas to practice hard tackling on each other and also competitive high marking. Given that these are two players that might over-think their performances, it was good to see them get some special attention.

Nothing else noticed by me except Tyson looks better for the break.

Didn't see anything to suggest that ANB will play this week ? I have been very impressed with the crop of 2014 debuts and have high hopes for this kid. This season may be lost in regards to finals but witnessing the 1st year impact and talent that Vanders, Stretch, Brayshaw are putting out gives me high hopes for a better 2016.

He was training. If they think he's ready, I guess they'll play him. I saw nothing to suggest one thing or the other.

I asked him outright and he said yes

He also led the warm up lap when training started to a lot of banter, plus the handshake, plus the confirmation with me, expect him to debut

Other points from training, the hamstrung group, Salem, Vandenberg and Kent did about 30 minutes and then left

During one of the match sim/ball movement drills Roos got very angry and 'bellowed', unlike his usual approach, think it was a case of the players completely ignoring what he and Goodwin had just told them

Toumpas looks a completely different character at training now, a lot more relaxed, think he is getting used to being in the team and will continue to improve

What did the hammie group do in that 30 minutes? Gentle laps? Any hints as to whether they are all 426??

Can I ask if you know - do the players know at the last training session who will wear the vest or is that decided on the day of the game ?

(i.e does ANB know he will starting or subbing ?)

vanders and Salem walked laps and did a bit of handball, Kent was running on far side of oval

Thanks for that information

Can any of the physios who post here give us some idea about hamstring rehabilitation, both with and without surgery. I guess there must be all grades from a slight tweak to the full Monty like Kent and FIGJAM.

VFL Player review.

Alex Neal-Bullen: We thought he was our best player on the weekend. He played his best game for the club. He had 34 possessions, five effective tackles and 20 contested possessions. He won a lot of critical contests and his hands were really good. He brought a lot of players into the game. His performance on the weekend was as good as Ive seen in any game Ive seen this year. Hes had a really interrupted pre-season and hes building really nicely, so it was a good effort by Alex.

Bold is my highlight.

Bit of a tangent, but I thought it was interesting that Plapp went out of his way to point out that three of his young players are really enjoyable to coach because they listen (in contrast to Roos' comments after the game). The three he mentioned were OMac, Harmes and Stretch.

I wonder how much of an influence this has on players having success at the top level - I've heard stories about some players such as Blease, Morton and Gysberts being nigh-on uncoachable because they didn't listen to feedback.

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
