If you read the OP its about how a rookie coach and his team created a plan to counteract possibly the best team in the comp, Freo. Yep we were playing the bset 3 teams in the comp and what did we do?

There is no way the hawks were going to let us play 'our' game plan and it was clear after the 1st quarter we were under fire. At the risk of repeating the OP we have been beaten on the 11 previous occasions in the same style - thrashings. With the same players killing us.

I ask you again what did we do? I think the answer is SFA. If you have a better one let us all know.

This is it for me also. The form of Jones, Tyson, Dawes, Vince, Howe, Jamar, Lumumba, Watts and a few others has ranged from ordinary to disastrous. Add to that injuries to Viney, Jetta, Frost and Kent and it is no wonder we copped a 100 point shellacking from Hawthorn, and actually amazing Sydney and Freo were not similar scorelines.

I too am willing to see how we fare from now up until the break, and there can't be any more even 5+ goal losses, let alone 10 goal or 100 point beltings.

Really happy for Luke. He's a lovely bloke. I've still got his MFC player suit from when he used to play for the Dees. I hope his team has an off week this coming round though.

I've long wanted an MFC coach to be unconventional and tactically progressive. Clarkson was brilliant at this when he first started coaching and Luke seems to have a similar eye for the unconventional.

Another ex-Melbourne person doing well at another club. It's frustrating, isn't it? You only have to look at Hawthorn's coaching staff. It's an old MFC boys reunion.

I think from Roos' perspective, given it was always going to be a three year deal and nothing else, is there any point in implementing any particularly new strategies if you're not going to be there to oversee them in four years time? I hope though, as 'Sir Paul Roos' says, Roos is simply laying the foundations that Goodwin can then run with once PR hands over the mantle.

I reckon this is what is happening, Roos will make the tough calls, hopefully get rid of the blokes who aren't serious and take some hits knowing he isn't going to be sacked regardless, and hopefully hand over to Goodwin a list that can go somewhere,

Roos is doing what McCartney did for the dogs, teaching them about defence and contested ball, beveridge took over a really well built foundation, Roos took over a train wreck

i also think a lot of our ball movement issues are to do with blokes up the field not running hard enough to create options, and our ruckman and talls besides Jesse not being good enough to take a contested grab around the ground

Goodwin will bring a more attacking flair to our game, he already has but he'll take over a team that knows how to defend, how to play finals footy and has some serious development into our young guys

Rios isn't that interested in game day tactics as he wants each player to play their role and be accountable. Mae are on the right trajectory, it is simply a matter of us starting so far back, and needing to get the fundamentals in place before dealing with game day tactics.

It is an interesting that both clubs who tanked the hardest over a period of time are the 2 clubs playing with no spirit.

There is an emptiness to the MFC. The players had a crack for 2 minutes on saturday then up went the white flag.

First of all let me be clear I am not having a go at SWYL, but I've wanted to post on this tanking theory for some time.

I've always believed this theory about us tanking and the impact on the club culture was bogus and simply an opportunity to retrospectively fit a cause to an effect and ironically Roos has been the greatest proponent of this theory from his 'On the Couch' days.

If my memory serves me well, it all started with Maclean making his statement in 2012 and then Roosy took up the running with his claim that it created the culture which afflicted the club in 2012.

The facts are 2009 was the year of the so-called tanking. However in 2010 we inflicted Roos' greatest loss after which he declared Melbourne "the team of the next decade". So one year after the tanking he declares us the team of the future. Until the Geelong debacle in 2011 no-one claimed there was an institutional problem at the club. So suddenly when the team couldn't win in 2012 it was caused by tanking - BS!

As I said at the beginning, I have been really disappointed that Roos has never been picked up on these facts.

Similarly the guff in the media about no one ever having heard of a player asking to be dropped, (in reference to Watts). It happened 4 weeks ago when Goodes asked to be dropped to the Swans reserves.

Incredibly it could have been even worse. Both Gold Coast and Richmond were expected to be at least top six teams this year. We could well have been 0 - 7 with a percentage in the 50's.

A worse start than last year would have been diabolical. It could still become that. All it will take is a couple more critical injuries.

its a miracle we have won any games when you consider that Vince, Lumumba, Jones, Dunn, Tyson, Howe, Watts and Dawes are all well down on their best form and in the case of the last 2 , totally useless.

Add the injuries to key players and 2-5 is a good result.

no it won't, we are the only team where poor losses are acceptable, on top of that Roos is untouchable

The big difference is that the Doggies have been recruiting quality mids for years while we have been stockpiling fairly average talls and have wasted a huge number of picks on mids who never made it. They can afford to play a game that relies on winning a contested ball in the midfield, while when we do that we get smashed. Repairing the damage to our midfield has been Roos' goal from the start, and it's still going on. What we've seen over the last few weeks is that we are still well behind the good teams when it comes to our midfield stocks.

This is the bit that's worrying me also. How many players on our list would you say are having a WORSE year then they did last year? Excluding new players, 0bviously, would it be fair to say that Tommy Mac is the ONLY player who has stepped up from last year? Most damaging is of course the midfield, Jamar, NJones, Tyson, Cross and Vince have ALL gone backwards. What in the name of God could possibly explain this and I would love to know Roosy's take on it. Not good at all.

And that's the crux of it for me. I think we have enough quality up forward to match it with most teams, but, we don't get it to them with nearly enough quality. We also don't get it down there often enough either. Our backline has shown it can match it with most as well. But our midfield can't compete and therefore the rest of the team can't compete either.

A fix to our midfield was always going to take time, although it's disappointing to see us lose by so much regardless of who the opponent is.

I understand the frustration from some supporters, particularly after a promising start to the year, but I am 100% behind Roos and his belief that we will be in such a better place come the end of 2016.
