What an unbelievable effort from our back 6 last night. Its good to talk about the likes of Hogan and Vandenberg but I thought at times when we were under immense pressure from their inside 50s we just stood up to the task.

Howe: Gave him a spray earlier on for showing Frawley like efforts but got better as the game went on. A great effort.

Jetta: Unlucky to go off with the knock but the first half he was vital I thought.

McDonald: Some serious man crush here. I thought earlier on Riewoldt was just starting to get on top but Tommy stuck to his guns and dominated the whole game. Continued to provide run and carry, just needs to fix his limitations and he will be a star of the comp. Another big scalp and a real general and leader down back for us.

Dunn: A true Vice Captains game. Lead right from the front and was sensational all night. And just to think 18 months ago this bloke career was at the crossroads. Love it dunny!

Salem: Was pretty critical of him last year but each week im eating my fair slice of humble pie to make up for last year. I don't know if anyone noticed when he went back with the flight of the ball I think in the 2nd or last Qtr and took a vital mark. I can see why some draft experts were comparing him to Luke Hodge. His toughness and courage is right up there. He tackles and harasses his opponents and and efforts are outstanding. Couldn't get over how clean and tidy he was under the wet. I seriously don't think he missed a kick all night? Another fantastic game by Salem. One of many Jason Taylors special!

Garland: Back to his 2013 form. Must admit was worried about him at the start of the year but he is showing what a really important player he is for us. Provided drive and defended well. Well done Col. How about the pathetic holding the ball against him. Could not seriously believe that!

We are building a serious defence here. Club are finding it hard to get an easy kick inside 50 because of how well these guys defend and also the pressure from the midfield.

And we do NOT miss Frawley one bit!

Salem has been excellent, his attack on the ball and his 1 on 1 work is fantastic for a kid. He's not receiving enough love if you ask me.

McDonald, Jetta and Salem rarely ever lose a 1 on 1.

I'd still like Frost developed and used back there, he'd be perfect for the tall athletic types like Griffiths, who could've been a huge problem last night.

Agreed on all counts.

McDonald is fantastic but he does make me cringe watching him run himself into trouble

Look up composure in the dictionary you get a picture of Salem. Mr Composure. We don't talk him up much, but we all love him. Just blends in because he does everything right.

Classy with ought being overly flashy. Dependable, steadfast rock.

I was surprised to see Howe had 655m gained last night. That is massive. The back 6 have great trust in each other to halve or win the contest and rarely go three up or draw their man into a contest. They will be tested well in the next 3 weeks and will be great to see how they go.

How do you find stats like metres gained?

Is he too good not to eventually be moved to the midfield, or does he just become a back half general, a la Hodge?

Is there such a thing as uber-competence? He just does everything so calmly, precisely, and well. Love him.

Frawley not missed at all, especially his decision making ...

No, but we might miss Jetta against Ballantyne & Walters.

I wanted us to get Jaksch as a tall swing man. I didn't know anything about Frost, except I thought he was a backman.

Its nice to see Frost's a swingman after all, & a strong boy

Jade Rawlings is proving to be one of our most important if not best assistant coach in a very long time.

Agree, although I don't think Griffiths is capable of being a huge problem against anyone, ever.

I've been super impressed with Salem's development so far this year. Easy to forget he's only played 16 games.

Back six

Garland (with a cameo by Vince) - have played to the coaches instruction so well, doing team things not individual stuff and it is shutting down opposition play makers from carving us up the way we used to get opened up in recent history (MFC could play anyone into form).

Salem - I reckon he's the new Bruce Doull just wins so many contests or splits them. Serious love.

McDonald - More serious love, I didn't even mind the mistakes his confidence shows the trust that has been given to this group to take the game on when they think they can. He's getting better and still so young, I reckon he'd walk into any team including Hawthorn the fact that he built a game to go with the tank is awesome.

Jetta - Braveheart and gold dust, his scalps are a key part of our wins.

Dunn - that 70m torp was a beauty, I like his kick-ins more than when TJ was at the club.

Lumumba - is great for the club, he had a bad day on Friday (chief culprit of the hospital handball) but love him there and he's into the team, I think the doubters have all recanted anyone want to own up and say they were wrong.

ALSO Huge love for the hardness, niggle and support the club shows (thank you coaches. Bruise free footy is so gone. And I honestly think Viney is going to be compared to Matthews for toughness but not the thuggery.

Rivers and Frawley wouldn't get a game in our new look back 6.

They are both boring as [censored] too.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
