I just think it's nerves trying to carry the team in his first 3 games, his kicking is normally very solid.

As a matter of interest, do we have a kicking coach? That is, a coach specifically working on the kicking technique of those players who need it (which is basically everyone except Watts and Salem*).

*which is being a bit unfair on a few players such as Jones, Dunn and some others

There is absolutely NOTHING that needs to be altered with Hogans kicking style. It produces results that any forward would be proud of.

The fact that it is something different to others is no cause to worry. His ball drop and straight follow through is perfect. It doesn't matter one iota what he does before that.

If you had watched him at Casey previously, you would know how accurate he is.

Sheahan or Brown: 'Will Watts play next week?'

Roos: (without any hesitation) 'ABSOLUTELY!'

Absolutely is not an answer to that question. Absolutely not? Yes absolutely.

Are you going to jump off the building? Absolutely? It is part of an answer or to express complete agreement.

Absolutely:-adverb - with no qualification, restriction, or limitation; totally. :- interjection - to express complete agreement.

I presume Roos meant , yes absolutely or a simple yes.
It has come to mean yes, I hate that. Rant over, absolutely.
PS He will play.

It would be interesting getting someone like Wayne Carey to look at Jesse's kicking. Out on the field it doesn't look fluid but perhaps it is just a confidence thing at this stage.

What was curious was one of the few times I was able to watch the game over the weekend was when Jesse took that great mark 15m out but missed the goal. I watched him walk in and I knew he was going to miss it but it wasn't because of the ball drop. The ball went the exact direction of his body but his body at the last moment pointed towards the behind post. Thus he missed.

So his ball drop appears consistent and good (something Cloke definitely doesn't have), he might just need his approach looked at.

In due course his action will be worked on. No doubt about that. Should it be a priority and changed right away? Probably not. Let the kid enjoy the main game and getting used to crashing big bodies, taking big contested marks and kicking a few goals. All good right foot forwards streamline their action to straighten up and KISS. Hogan will do the same in time.

Those talking about J Kennedy's stutter obviously haven't watched him of late. It's gone. I just watched some clips with Templeton, Plugger, Dunstall. They are a joy to watch when kicking for goal. Beautiful set shots.

As for left footers such as Buddy, well, they are a different species of footballer altogether.

Blasphemy! Jesse forgive this little lost fool

There was a video posted in Instagram last week showing Hulk practicing his goal kicking at Adelaide Oval.

Very straight, methodical, and fluent. This was not the run up he uses on match day. It's one thing to train a player to change their natural kicking technique, but under match day pressure all that can go out the window and the player reverts to what is comfortable and trusted.

(And it's only his third game)

I coach a bit of basketball in my spare time TPF39. At practice, I work the players on doing opposite hand lay-ups, dribbling, etc. because it's a fundamental of the game. In a real match, I don't care what hand they do a lay-up with.

When it's a real game, I want them doing what they are most comfortable with, UNTIL they have shown they can master the "right" way at training first.

Hogan may have been instructed to do the same.

The fact that Garlett has kicked 5.10 is a bit of a positive IMO.

It means he's having plenty of shots on goal.

If nothing changes he's on track to kick 21.70 and I highly doubt that will happen for a bloke of garletts class.

Yes, I agree which is why I said he will get better as the season goes on... he just needs to work on his set shots (either that or play on and run around the mark before taking his shot ;)).

We haven't had a small forward who can get the ball let alone have shots on goal - his problem at Carlton was not his goal kicking - it was that he didn't get the ball enough - in his best season 2011 where he kicked 48 goals he averaged 12 disposals a game. His is getting his hands on the ball which is great ( his figures are a little inflated as he is having a few runs in the midfield). JG is not a worry for me.

Hey BBP, how did you calculate 21.70? If we multiply the three games played by 7 to get to 21 games as a rough approximation for a full season, wouldn't he be kicking 35.70? Just curious as to your workings.

And has Kennedy's accuracy improved? Seems to me he used to kick a lot of goals with the stutter.

If he kicked straight in the VFL and doesn't in the AFL (noting only 3 games so far), then the issue is clearly nerves, not technique.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
