People get defensive when it comes to how Jones is rated. Myself included. It's understandable as to why. The bloke IS the club.

Out of interest, what is the one trait that separates Sloane from Jones?

Point exactly. I would say midfield depth. Sloane has a strong workmanlike midfield around him, as well as possibly the best forward line in the comp. A lot easier to kick long to this forward line than what ours has consisted of, especially the past 5 years.

Jones. Chronically over rated by some - he wouldn't be in the best 3 players of any of the top midfields.  And chronically under rated by some - he would be in all the top midfields.

If you're going to say anything at all about the one consistent shining light of our deplorable team over the past 8 or so years, be prepared for a backlash no matter how much "you're not after a discussion on jones"

While Jones may not have an elite trait, in your eyes, how do you measure durability, ability to extract clearances, get to contest after contest, contend with tagging, perform consistently above average for a midfielder in disposals, tackles contested possessions all while doing so playing high game time with (until recently ) little to no midfield help? You want to talk about elite traits? How does leadership sound? Anyway, you can say what you want. Disagree all you like, Jones is in the top 25 midfielders in the comp and has been for several seasons.

Prestia coming will simply add more midfield depth to our already growing young stocks, especially as he is closing in on 100 games and has hopefully come through his injury issues.

Don't get your knickers in a knot.  I don't rate Todd Viney A-grade and he made the team of the century.

Have watched a fair bit of Treloar going back to his Stingray days.  No doubt has the potential to be absolutely top notch, but would still say he has a way to go. At the moment he is very much a one way player.  He’d be a better all-round mid if he ran even half as hard defensively as he does offensively. I’d go as far to say that he’s a liability in this area.  All well and good if you’re at a club that surrounds you with hard working mids who can cover (Hawks, Sydney), but was Collingwood have a number of downhill skiers in their midfield at the moment, so poor defensive transition and accountability is the norm (with standout performances against Geelong and Brisbane proving to be the exception).

Yep, the Cats have their fair share of downhill skiers in the midfield too. Probably why they match up well.

You're right to point out Sloane, as I don't consider him elite/A-grade.

He's a far better mark and just as dogged in the application and contested ball stakes, but like Jones he's blue collar.

He's been better younger (than Jones), but unlike Priddis and Swan he too is probably not elite in any one skill in the game.

This is the last comment I'll make on Jones, as I'd rather rearrange my sock drawer.

This is definitely true. The same can be said about Viney and so many clearance players, because that's the nature of the contest around centre bounces and stoppages.

But apparently none of this matters AF because you have been deemed a 'pleb'. It's all over.

Yeah, time to update username to AdamPleb.

There's a particular Demonland experience when you start reading a thread because you're interested in the topic, you read a couple of pages to the end and you think why am I reading that?, where am I? did I click into the wrong thread or is the site broken?...

An then remember you're on Demonland...

We will have three A graders by mid 2017 - Gawn, Viney and Hogan.

Neither Prestia or Jones are A graders, and thats not a knock on them they are both absolute guns.

Prestia's  "grade' is dependent upon fitness and mindset.....     possibly ....location

hes a gun...a walk in best 4 in our midfield. let's be real.

Haven't you gone back and forth on Prestia being an A grader? So will you say he's an A grader next week? :P

no AF, I have always said he was a solid B grader.  Copped  a lot of heat for it during trade period when the Prestia thread was very busy.

Harsh markers on the skip.

Nate Jones is a star!

Will go down in history as one of our finest, not only for his career, but how he conducted himself, stayed loyal and bought a lot of belief and mate ship over a young team.

Anyone disputing that, gtfo.

Short memory mate, there were things Brayshaw did last year that absolutely demonstrate how he will become a terrific player for us. Pay no attention to his first 6 months of this year- preseason injury, concussion and a lack of continuity playing have worked against him. Think he will develop into a player very similar to Jobe Watson was at his peak.

100% Correct... Gus was amazing last year & clearly has the ability to take himself to A Grade in the midfield not off half back. Didn't he play nearly every game last year in his first season. You are clearly judging him on 5 minutes in 2016 & have dismissed his entire awesome 2015 season.

A grade, B grade, D grade who really cares. Perform and play your role in game day. I think there's too much emphasis on 'grading' players.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
