Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Who cares...? The kid made a mistake in a meaningless pre-season game. He'll learn from it.

No the mistake was the bloke calling for it.

If its true that it was Cross then its a poor error from him. Should have known better to direct him to go straight down the line.

Yep.considering the inexperience of the kicker and the marking ability of the lead, the proximity of the opponents.

spot on.

The good teams also have good leaders to steer the ship and direct players and movement.

Clarkson has said many of times that Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell are like playing assistant coaches out there. You only have to see them always yelling and directing play and teaching the young fellas good habits.

Its common sense when you know theres not much time left and your deep in defence your number one option to always hit towards the boundary.

That's what happens when you recruit a lad because his Dad works at the club.

Lets face the truth, he is 5 feet 6, can't mark over his head, can't hit a target with either foot, can't kick further than 30 metres, and is slower than a snail, oh yeh he has a good try, that's redeeming, future of the club, laughable.

A bit harsh. Let's look at him at seasons' end. I reckon he will be ok.

if cross did call for it (and i'm not sure if he did) then both were in the wrong, but more so viney

it's footy 101 that even a 15yo would know

he better not do it again in a real game

Or else what daisy? You'll put him in timeout for 15 minutes?

academic wiseblood. maybe i should have just said that that should have been a lesson he won't forget. let's hope so

True. but I think we should be aware of 'last mistake syndrome'. There were plenty of clangers well before that, any one of which could have made a one-goal difference to the game. If we had been 4 goals up at the time,Viney's would still be bad, but probably not talked about anything like as much.

But that is why you do not do it...Because we were not 4 goals up

We were in front by less than a goal..and the game was lost

I've thought for a while Vineys disposal isn't great so I'm glad its being highlighted so he can hopefully learn.

Earlier in the night he was at the ball drop and Salem was in front of him and instead of giving a quick handball up to Salem he just took possession and it ended in a ball up. He needs to understand his role in the team as a bloke who gets it and feeds it to the classier uses of the ball. He needs to help us generate spread but at the moment he isn't quite doing it.

I agree Jones who was good on Friday night has developed his disposal game well. Sam Mitchell who is not a great overhead mark or long kick is a similar build and hopefully role model for our Jack.

By the by I thought Tysons game on Friday night was similarly not so team oriented but for different reasons. We are still gelling as a team. Hopefully we have a season where we improve these things and don't just lose our way and end up playing as a bunch of individuals.

Turnovers (notice the plural) and fumbles killed us, not any one particular play.

I agree Viney messed it up, but he was one of many in the last half. We had more than enough chances to win the game. And it's better JV learns that in a nothing practice match than in one that has 4 points riding on it.

On Viney: he reminds me of a young Chunk. The Jones boy loved grabbing the ball and trying to crash packs in his first couple of years. Beat one, beat two, get caught HTB on the third. And as he matured he understood that he wasn't a big kid among little kids anymore, he was a big kid playing against big men. And so he adapted. Jack will do the same.

If jack Viney turned into a Nathan jones I wouldn be over the moon!

you wouldnt be alone

Im sure JV will indeed develop. Hes had a lot put on his plate. That plate needs to be cleared somewhat and better 'teachings' heaped upon it..

That stuff up what a call back to the dark ol days ...of panic football. They need to be banished

Cross in the leadership group, calling for the football where he ran into the spot and sat there instead of continuing his lead is worse than a player in his third season looking to a leader and giving it to him.

That said the kick was loopy and thus it was the execution that was a bigger issue, if viney had stabbed the pass through the issue would not be spoken about, or had cross continued to lead back to the square allowing for us to bring it out the other side it would not have been spoke about either.

Cross probably had a brain fade and went bac in his mind to when a team mate could kick a ball...and more than 30m

Good post. IMO the fact that we are still gelling as a team - and still have a long way to go - is our main problem.

Which, by the way, is a slight negative (far outweighed by the positives, but a negative nonetheless) of making wholesale changes to the list year after year.

I think Roos' main priority has been to try to settle the various parts of the team - midfield, attack & defence - even if it means limiting the amount of experimentation he can do. That's why he's kept the selection fairly stable, which means the guys like Bail & Matt Jones & McKenzie have been selected for all three games, despite struggling.

He would probably prefer to bring the likes of Brayshaw & Stretch into a settled "gelled" midfield than into one which was still scrambling for everything.

Why would an AFL football even consider kicking across the face of goal deep in defence?

Players will make mistakes when under pressure, tired or when rushed but what Viney did should never happen.

The idea of kicking across the face of goal should not even enter his mind. It's like suddenly deciding that drinking battery acid is a good idea, it just should not ever happen, especially from a free kick with no pressure.

What year is this: 1962? Footy has changed.

and yet the ball is still oval, theres still 18 per side and rule 101-25-para-B says never kick it to the opposition in front of the goals !!

The more things change, the more they stay the same ^_^

When you have seniors like Grimes and Garland constantly kicking backwards and sideways setting the example you can't blame 3rd year players for following that example. The scars from years of having to defend against superior forward presses and carrying too many passengers remain. WYL was spot on, and the sooner we move most from "186" on, the better!

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
