Not sure why you say Garland. Has done every session from what I have read. Had a poor 2014 and needs to make amends. The reports I have read say he is training very well..

Hey jnrmac,

i was basing it on training reports that consistently mentioned that he was coming last in the (all) running drills. Although i think Saty said that this was all to do with his specific conditioning program (so maybe its not an issue at all, similar to garlett).

The more positive ones about him have started to occur recently when we have come more into match simulation. However, this is all based on circumstantial evidence from reading the training reports - no first hand knowledge.

I think we should forgive Garland for last year. His fitness was never up to scratch due to injury. The year before that he was in AA form and one of our most important players. At his best he can play tall and small and sets up plays out of the backline.

He was a successful full back for a while. No mean effort for someone of his size.

As you may have gathered I'm a fan.

Forgot to mention one other observation from yesterday's training:

*McQueen this one's especially for you mate*

On a couple of occasions duration match simulation, Petracca demonstrated how he loves to rise to the challenge.

In hindsight, I've seen this quality in him a couple of times during the past week. It tells me he has the makings of a big game player, which is pretty important given our need for match winners.

Didn't want to heap too much pressure on the kid but I couldn't help myself.

I really, really hope the Saints passing on Petracca proves to be one of the great drafting flubs in history.

Sorry McCartin!!

Even if McCartin is a good player I hope Petracca is just that much better.

Uh, nah, haven't changed my tune. None of the excellent posters who've contributed training reports have abused others for having opinions about MFC players.

Maybe you should know what you're talking about before attempting ignorant smartass comments.

Would definitely of been a different response if it was Saty giving that report, you and I both know that, so cut the bs.

No probs. I have been reading closely about Garland because I have been critical of his 2014 - many excuse it on the 'no pre-season' argument. Will be watching his performance closely this year. Needs to stand up and lead.

I had the pleasure of being within 10 metres of some of Garland's rebound work on Saturday morning and it made me realize how good he is in traffic His change of direction is exceptional. Roos would be very happy to have such a polished and experienced defender ready to roll in 2015!

I'm a huge Garlo fan also. he was terrific in 2013. I really rate players who play well in poor teams.

That said whilst i acknowledge he had an interrupted preseason last year and never got to peak fitness something still seem NQR in the second half of the season. His body language often seemed iffy and he did not play with the same verve. He also butchered the ball a lot more often.

I might be wrong and perhaps it was all about his fitness. Either way if he returns to his best form he represents almost a new recruit for Roos and could be a key player down back for us.

I'm expecting garland to pick up on his form from 2013 this year and lock down his position without a doubt. On top of the lack of fitness due to missing a big chunk of pre season in 2014 he was still returning from ankle surgery and played like that all year. I had ankle surgery around the same time last year that he did and am still not quite back to 100%, yet continue to run and play competitive sport knowing the more confidence I gain in it the more freedom and trust I have in the ankle. I'd have to suggest he was a little off the pace because of it and I'd put Riley in the same boat - takes a lot longer than just getting on the park to get back to your true playing potential.

NUMBER one draft pick Paddy McCartin was admitted to hospital on Saturday to receive treatment for a skin infection on his right thigh.

Leather poisoning!

Interesting. I've heard he had the same skin infection on the palm of his right hand.

Viney should be in the leadership group. He epitomizes everything I want this Melbourne team to be about. I don't care how old he is.

Interesting observation and I agree. I've been shouted down for suggesting the same, but I think any reservations stem from a deep fear that he will become another Trengove if given LG responsibilities. LG is not the captaincy. Viney is a clear and obvious leader to me, speaking as a relative outsider.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
