Oh! H looked great. Great vision, great focus and attack on the ball. Didn't hear him say much, but, he doesn't need too. His actions speak volumes. Think he will reward the trust with his best season ever. If only to stick it to $

Wouldn't be surprise if its only back spasms by the sound of it.

I know the physios do a fantastic job but they got the Hogan one wrong last year and it cost him a whole year. Should have just rested him. It was only NAB cup.

Im sure they will be extra cautious with him this summer.

That's not true either. Even if they rested him straight away it could've been his back already had the stress reaction and could've cost him most of the year anyway. We know the Geelong game made him sorer as any game of footy does when you aren't 100%, but we don't know if it actually made the existing injury worse.

Its not the physios who diagnose, they treat whatever they are told to by the medicos, if Hogan said he was feeling a bit stiff in the back and not much else, what would the medical specialists on Demonland diagnose

That's not true. The physio's are often first line of call for something like back tightness and will diagnose it. Usually both the docs and physio's evaluate at the same time. Either way, what I hope happened was that he felt better after a bit of treatment, they tested him thoroughly before the game and with no further discomfort he played, only to have the issues post game. If there was nothing at all to indicate a problem requiring rest or further testing then I can understand their decision. I can imagine after a 3 hour training session and a mountain of work that every second player would feel some back tightness at some stage.

The mishandling of Trengove is a far bigger worry to me!

Regarding the 3k time trial, Roosy said towards the end of his pre-season update video

( http://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/2014-12-22/paul-roos-preseason-update ) that the players would do their 3k time on the Friday of the first week back (this Friday) and that they would be expecting personal bests from pretty much everyone.

Speaking of that video, how tired does Roosy look!! Looks like he hasn't slept for a whole year (which he probably hasn't, given the mess he inherited!!)

Thanks to all those who've posted reports from training, much appreciated. I've been down a few times this pre-season and 2 of the big standouts for me have been Jack Viney and Dom Tyson. Very excited about these guys this year!!

As I posted previously, Nev Jetta is working on bettering his time by 20 seconds, and yes it looks like the time trial will be on Friday

Again what mishandling, he has had nothing but bad luck, I asked him, he blames nobody except his foot, he was shattered when he went for the scan pre the trade talks and they found the foot had not healed like it should. At least you can see the point re the tightness, if that is all Hogan said he felt, then with no past history the 'correct' decision was made. Hindsight is wonderful thing

Popped down briefly this morning. Noticed a couple of outstanding moments.

Watts "Nice gear" to a pass from stretch in the rehab group. The weight, the speed and the sit of the pass brought a smile across his face. He saw the smarts and the skills. A not so subtle difference to the rib cage smashing monsters that Vandenberg was sending down. Although, his skills seemed sound. If he gets his fitness up, he will be a monster through the mid field.

Brayshaw firing a rocket like handball 20m. So fast in comparison to some of the floaters being passed around.

Salem, using both feet with sublime skill. Getting the player to where 'He' wants him. Not where the player feels he wants it. Can't wait to see him start to influence games like that.

Liked a Grimes/Petraka pairing. Saw them finish first in a running/push-up/sit-up drill. Then Grimes get down and do more push ups, Petraka thought he was done, realised and smashed out some more while others still finished. Grimes looked, dare I say it, quick. Albeit, a little thin.

Liked Hogan and Dawes constantly going over their leading patterns and advising each other every time. Their awareness of Garlett is exciting.

Only there for a short while, but, good to see a few there. Can someone tell me who was in the yellow boots. Very Tall. Should know, couldn't pick it.

As frustrating as Dawes can be at times with his inability to take a mark that isn't a chest mark, his leadership and guidance alone make him worth every bloody penny we spent.

breaking down in training is a concern given that match day will place even greater stress on the body

sorry, I must have missed the post that said he "broke down".

If he was stiff in the back then the right option would have to just rest him. They made a blue and it shouldn't happn again.

And im sure it won't.

Fair call, from reading reports he has slimmed down a touch, need him to play like he did against the Crows more often than not. Time to deliver.

Hogans back issues are symptomatic. In other words, he complains of tightness, and that is the only thing the physios have to go off. there is nothing "wrong" with his back that shows up on scans, etc. Hopefully one day he learns how to deal with chronic back and hammy tightness but if not I can't see him playing many games of afl sadly.

nothing personal tsfka but that particular line is becoming very tiresome, even cliched

Where is the time trial held and do they have any ball work drills during this session?

The boys trained really well all flying, over heard some of the boys from Collingwood boys at cafe saying how HL told them that the Dees are really flying and not just what clubs all say, but that he has never seen so many players flying that time of year, said that watts is more competitive then what most people think, all so said Tyson reminds him of a young Dame swan.

He cost us a high draft pick and some good cash. Sorry 'Song' but he really needs to perform on the ground this year and start taking the marks he should then he will be worth every bloody penny well spent.

Agree. While Dawes has provided the on/off field leadership we lacked his on field output has been disappointing.

Needs a big year next year. He has slimmed down, doing his first full pre season in years, will have Hogan and Garlett next to him so I expect atleast the 40 goal mark this year.

To be fair mate, if he did hold the club responsible at all, there is no way he would mention it to a supporter

I'll defend Dawes becuase he was always recruited as second forward to compliment Clark. Whilst there is room for improvement I'm not too concerned by his output so far.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
