Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The Pick 23 trade - TICK!

Keen to get my fellow DL members thoughts on what I believe was a wonderful result with Pick 23 in the latest trade / draft period.

Trading it to GWS for Frost, Pick 40 and 53 allowed us to get three young talents from a 2nd round pick which was a master stroke. To then get ANB at 40 and Oscar at 53, both of whom were predicted 2nd round talents themselves, I don't think we could have asked for anymore from the List Mgt team.

Frost, ANB and Oscar is a great package for 23 as it includes two young KPP, when Saints get only one in Goddard for 21.

Paying under the odds for Stretch at 42 and having Petracca slide to us only adds to a fantastic draft, giving Roos and Goodwin plenty to work with over the next 5 years.

Who else agrees??

All in all a very astute draft. Plus the trade period picking up HL, Garlett, and Newton (on top of Frost) wasn't too shabby also [especially when nobody thought we still retained Clark to trade]!

and while you're thinkin about that, think about this: the talk at the time very strongly indicated that we were looking to nab a big name (Dangerfield/J.Kennedy) by throwing that pick 23 along with pick 3 AND the pick received by trading Trengove (12?).. so it's quite possible by JT failing that medical, we missed a big name but ended up with Brayshaw, Trengove, Frost, ANB and O-Mac ALL instead of that one marquee player. Could be a huge blessing in disguise.

We will know in about 4-5 years how good or bad the trade was...

It is funny to think of the hand-wringing on here right after that trade - now some look at it like a master-stroke.

Who will be right?

we'll never know though, because we can't be certain who that marquee player actually was, much less how they would have performed at the Dees. Tell you what, I'd still be tempted to trade all five to have Dangerfield in the middle round 1!

On the face of it, this appears to be a good trade and it looks all the more so when you consider that we might have been forced to use the pick to secure Billy Stretch as a father son selection. There were a few experts around who were surprised that one or two clubs didn't bid in the high teens/low twenties for him given his performances in the under 18 championships (All Australian) and in the senior team at Glenelg later in the season.

We might be talking about this trade in the years to come ...

It's already looking long odds that the trade is a loss with break even being worse case scenario. Of course, we won't know who we might have picked if we'd kept pick 23 but the likelihood that whoever we might have picked ending up a star is remote. The chances of ever unearthing a star with a pick in the low 20's isn't great.

I'm happy to call it a win already ... hoping to be able to call it a huge win in the future ... all 3 of Frost, O-Mc & ANB could end up being reasonable players for us - at a minimum.

I would've liked pick 23 because we badly need top end talent. Can't leave it all to Dom Tyson and Hogan. Pick 23 would've been another shot at what I would consider getting a top end talent who slid down the order in addition to picks 2 and 3.

But the 3 for 1 trade was very useful in filling the depth of our list. Frost, Oscar and ANB all for 1 pick sounds pretty good to me. Instead of speculative later picks we get 3 guys who look like they'll eventually push for spots, train hard and be good for the culture.

If we kept pick 23 I would've been keen on Maynard, Viojo-Rainbow, Lamb or Toby McLean.

With my position being that our club needs to assemble a full 'best 22' of genuine AFL-capable players, before we worry about having any stars, I'm very, very pleased with how this worked out.

Frost seems more than likely, ANB is a hardworking midfield trooper at worst, and Oscar McDonald is a credible prospect as well.

In all the times I fiddled with the 2014 phantom drafts and tried to pick out players I liked, generally I felt like anything into the mid-late first round would get us someone very suitable. Laverde and Goddard slipped as far as 20 and 21, but by 23 the the options were getting very thin for players who looked like they would be a dramatic step up from later round selections.

Seems to have been a great trade period for us.

That said, we lost Clark and Frawley, both of whom were really important players for the club.

I reckon Clark will dominate at the Cats. I'm really disappointed he left us.

Injury would be the only concern 'Ron' but I agree. If he gets a clear run at it then he is a real bonus for them, they have taken a punt though.

Clark wasn't even playing and Frawley was mediocre at best all year

We did get Lumumba and Brayshaw out of it you know

Way too early to call, which is bleedingly obvious. Appears good on paper.

You're not wrong, but if we had kept pick 23, there's some chance we would have taken ANB there anyway. If not, then at the very least he definitely would have been in the mix with a few others you'd think. So in that sense, the trade is already looking smart without a game being played.

But you're right in that time will tell how good these kids become. If they all end up delisted in 2 years then we won't be gloating too much. I don't expect that to be the case and think Frost will play lots of games this year.

We get 3 bites at the cherry. Either Frost, ANB or Oscar Mc turn out to be a player, we've nailed it.

If 2 of those 3 turn out to be players, we've hit the jackpot. If all 3 turn out to be players, we can kiss the curse goodbye.

I'm confident Oscar Mc will be a player. I'm assuming his attitude to the work ethic and preparation will be equal of Tom's and based on his highlights and training reports, he looks to have a better set of skills (and is taller) than his older brother.

Let's all remember that lack of development has been at the crux of many of our failed draft picks. It's been addressed in a pretty spectacular fashion and should pay dividends.

ANB was a genuine slider who was ranked in many phantom drafts in the 20s... Maybe we would have picked him up anyway.

I don't disagree with the point of the opening post, but St Kilda ended up with two potential KPPs with McCartin and Goddard.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
