In the dark ages Victorians and New South Welshmen used to debate the relative merits of their relative brews Fosters VB Carlton and Melbourne bitter versus Tooths Tooheys and Resches. This was usually done with a fair bit of vehemence and a lot of hyperbole -However they all agreed that Australian beer was the best in the world - the argument was whivh particular state produced this nectar of the Gods.

Thank god for cheap airfares and the growth of international travel. The blinkers were lifted, Europeans had been making beer for centuries and had just about perfected the process, what's more they didn't adulterate their beers with sugars and other nasties. Just malt hops and water.

For what its worth my favourites, all Pilsners or lagers are Konisberg Paulina Pilsner Rachenberger (???) Urquiel the Polish beers (can't remember the name) and at a pinch Becks and Heinecken.

In the context of this thread The question should be - Is any Australian beer worthy of bearing a Melbourne player's name on it? For example, I don't wan't Ron Barrassi's name on a can of Barrassi Bitter if it is undrinkable, what an insult to the great man.

What you say about Australian beers may have been true in the past (and may still be true in regard to mainstream beers), but there are many beers brewed locally that adhere to brewing methods adopted from the Europeans. For example, the Sharers Little Brewery based at the Picton Hotel outside of Sydney has been brewing using German methods since the '80's and make a very palatable drop indeed (served at the Australian Heritage Hotel in Sydney's Rocks area). The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel (also in the Rocks area) has been brewing naturally (with only malt, hops, yeast and water and with no added sugars, preservatives or additives) since the 80's as well.

I cite these particular beers as I am a resident of Sydney, but I'm sure there are similar stories in Melbourne as well. I think you would find there are plenty of local beers worthy of bearing the name of a Melbourne great. I do recall during a late 80's visit to Hobart, a pub/restaurant/brewery that adjoined a park at the top of a hill (close to what was then the Hobart Repatriation Hospital) that brewed a fine drop that, if I recall correctly, was called Tiger Ale. Any Tasmanians reading this may be able to offer up more info.

Fair enough- Some boutiques beers are fantastic and have been for a long while, however they are not generally available. I was commenting on the generally appalling standard of Australian commercial beers, Carlton, Resches and XXXX Tooheys (especially a vile concoction called Tooheys Old) in particular. I will admit that Coopers Pale Ale and the Tasmanian beers are actually OK but for the same money you can get a slab of imported German beer which is in another league.

I don't think it is cultural cringe perhaps just a vague feeling of betrayal having believed Carlton's propaganda for so long. There are a lot of overseas beer styles I just don't like such as the real ales and others that do nothing for me Corona, Singha, Tiger and the large American breweries products.

So my question remains with you amendment- Is any Australian commercial beer worthy of bearing a Melbourne player's name on it?

Considering the thread, I think it is for you to give your opinion on whether Cascade should or shouldn't have W-S's name on it? You seem to be making two (not unacceptable) points, there are some ok aussie beers - (agree strongly on coopers) and the XXXX and Tooheys is [censored] (agree although I think VB is a great solid drink)

The sad thing though Praha is that most 'foreign' beer isn't really foreign. It's all brewed here using the same brewing facilities CUB have been using for years. All CUB have done is pay for labeling rights meaning that we get an inferior product.

Same deal has played out overseas as well where VB (at least in Japan) tends to have a cleaner taste than it ever did over here.

I will agree on principle about Asahi and Yebisu. I remember in the old days when I lived in Japan and I came back here and drank a VB for the first time in a year. I was convinced that it had gone off!

That is partly true although even Euro Suds (AKA Heineken) which is brewed here, by either Lyon Nathan or CUB, is brewed to a Heinekin recipe bears no resemblance to other CUB or Lyon Nathan products It differs markedly from the Heineken brewed in Holland which is far more Hopsy and that brewed in Bangkok which I have tasted. The same with Becks. However if you look around you can often get imported Heineken or Becks but often at inflated prices. If you like affordable European beer Aldi often has Peroni on sale at about $45 per slab and some of the liquor outlets have other German beers Bitburger, Kongsberg at about $40

I'm a Melbourne supporter, so I drink wine.

That isn't enough. A true supporter will give colour, name, vintage and give a lovely desciption of the nose and palate!

If you want a good beer head to the Mountain Goat Brewery in Richmond on a Friday evening. Otherwise my beer of choice is Stone & Wood Pacific Ale from Byron Bay.

Great to see Cascade honour a Melbourne legend. Having said that Boags do produce much better beer, but the Moo Brew Brewery just outside Hobart is fantastic. $30 will buy you 8 stubbies from their collection of 6 (the hef was my favourite), an hour long tour and shoot some hoops at the end!

Love MGB and also Moo. Coopers Sparkling is easily one of the best if you have any sort of taste. I am a brew fanatic and have tasted most. So many boutique breweries and so little time!

Been to both of those and do great beer. Nice to know that they are still in existence. Australia Hotel always has a great line up of beers also. Must get up that way again

I was at the Tooborac Brewery (on the way up to Echuca) a few months back doing a brewery tour and tastings and they had just got a new head brewer, top bloke, who came from Moo, he said come back in a few months once he's settled has has the new equipment installed and he'll be trying some new stuff. Bout time for a road trip I reckon

have stated before that here in Beechworth we have the famous Beechworth Brewery as well as our extensive range of Wines so its always worth a road trip here.

But To add

I have also found that the vigneron of "Mount Pilot" wine, (Lachie Campbell) is a Melbourne supporter.

He now follows this site and we enjoy stimulating conversations when he visits The Provender our leading wine shop

I have the advantage of seeing his wine tasting days and there is always an opportunity to reset the palette but anyone can enjoy his wines which I recommend.

Would be pleased to see any comments from fellow supporters as there is obviously interest in the topic.

Best Pilsner I've had in ages - Panhead Port road pils. NZ beer from purvisbeer in richmond. Excellent

Also the American IPA from Mash (WA beer) deserves a mention. Quite resinous.

I just live stones a throw from the 'Mash.' As you mention, the IPA is a good drop and like most IPA's should be consumed moderately unless you just want to get [censored]-faced.

Might even swing down there this arvo for a froth or three.

Your spot on about Boags. I was fortunate enough to experience that back in October this year. Was very enjoyable. Loved their Wizard Smith Ale which sadly isn't for purchase outside Tassie.

That sucks big one's re the names. And sadly your right, the cost of court proceeding sup front are very steep and then if you loose become life shattering.....

I hope you blokes sober up by the start of the season.

Lucky man! I've found their English IPA a bit autumnal - and I'll try it once the seasons change. I think the advantage of boutique stuff is that you drink less and like it more -everyone wins.

VB is the best beer in the world bar none.

Where I Grew up we had white cans( Carlton draft) blue cans(fosters) and green cans(VB).

I got weaned on VB cans and many years later I still love it.

Could never adjust to German/British/Dutch/American beer.

Could never get VB over seas for many years Export Fosters was the best you could get, which is crown larger in Australia, but know you can get VB in Hong Kong all of the big in cities in China NZ the UK and even the U.S. if you know the right people.

It's going to take over the world trust me.

    The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P
