Dawes is suspended round 1 so you might get lucky and catch a few out! A bit depends on how Watts, Garland and Vince go recovering from ops/niggles/fitness for round 1. I'm also not sure about Michie and few newer players like Newton, if they'll slot in. Also reckon Toump and Salem will see more game time, especially early if their preseason continues the way it's going. Best of luck mate.

FB: Dunn Frost Jetta

HB: Garland McDonald Grimes

C: Lumumba Vince Cross

HF: Watts Hogan Kent

FF: Garlett Pederson Salem

My current round 1 team prediction

HB: Garland TMac Grimes

C: Lumumba Viney Vince

HF: Watts Hogan Howe

FF: Garlett Pedders/Gawn Kent

R: N Jones Jamar Tyson

INT: Toumpas Salem Cross

SUB: Petracca

Brayshaw, Bail and JKH could be considered very unlucky not to make the cut.

Best of luck Rollo! Merry Christmas!

Locks: Jetta, Dunn, McDonald, Lumumba, Vince, Jones, Watts, Hogan, Howe, Garlett, Jamar, Tyson, Viney, Cross, Dawes (omit)

Likely: Grimes, Garland, Kent, Pedersen

The next 4 spots will be where your tipping will be win and lost imo.

Decent chance: Gawn, Frost, Salem, Toumpas, Bail, M Jones, Petracca, Newton, Michie, JKH

Slim chance: McKenzie, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Fitzpatrick

B: Jetta, Dunn, Garland

HB: Lumumba, McDonald, Grimes

C: Vince, Jones, Toumpas

HF: Watts, Hogan, Howe

F: Garlett, Pedersen, Kent

R: Jamar, Tyson, Viney

Int: Cross, Michie, Salem

Sub: Petracca

Michie finished the year off well and I think that may tip in his favour, although it wouldn't surprise me to see Newton push his way into Round 1 the way Roos was speaking of him in the most recent update. My money would be on one of those two, along with Salem and Toumpas who are reportedly training well and bring that much needed class.

JETTA FROST DUNN

H MCDONALD SALEM

VINCE JONES WATTS

KENT PEDO HOWE

GARLETT HOGAN PETRACCA

JAMAR TYSON CROSS

VINEY MICHIE TOUMPAS NEWTON

I would like to see Salem/Toumpas start off a back flank as some elite disposal coming out the back half. Apparently being the captain affects your ability to kick a footy.

I think it is an encouraging sign that people aren't clamoring to throw Brayshaw and Petracca in at the deep end.

Rightly or wrongly, I think there is more trust in incumbent players (both in clubland and on the boards) to get the job done in this era than when Trengove and Scully were automatic walk up starts after their draft.

It shows three things:

1. Positive change in 'blooding' philosophy

2. There is genunie belief in the cattle. Whilst the list isn't perfect - it appears capable of executing Roos game plan
3. Those on the park are less likely now to give up their place so easily with good talent itching to get out there

The capacity to climb is actually (finally) there now. Get it done Dees.

Its a delicate balance of getting games into the first/second years players that have the class/potential to be great to those who have had several years on the list and still struggle with the basics or are consistently good/average without being great. We finished 17th..... Edited by Al's Demons

I've named who I think is in the best 22 and ready on track to play round 1. As preseason goes on I'll try to fill it out.

FB: Jetta Dunn ***1***

HB: Garland McDonald Howe

C: Vince Jones Lumumba

HF: Kent Hogan ****4***

FF: Garlett ****2** ***3****

Foll: Jamar Tyson Cross

Int: ****2/3*** Viney ****4***** ***3*****

1) Grimes v Frost. Could fit both in with one on the bench, but mostly I think these two are fighting for part of the best 6 defenders and going small or tall with Dunn/Garland. Gold Coast's 3 prong big forward attack leans towards getting Frost in. But I do want to see him play in preseason first

2) The second tall forward and back up ruck spot or spots comes down to Pedersen, Gawn and Fitzpatrick. I'm not sure if we will fit 2 of these in or go small with the extra forward. If Petracca is a freakish man child capable of playing as an undersized full forward then I say we go that route and then just pick one of Pedersen or Gawn. But if we need the extra tall for structure then so be it and probably hope you can sub at 3/4 time.

3) Half forward/midfield rotation/sub spots are available for Bail, JKH, Petracca, Salem and probably others

4) The remaining midfield spots (which includes one of the half forward spots) should be filled by the likes of Toumpas, Newton, Watts, Salem, Matt Jones, Michie or Brayshaw

Just off the top of my head, and could easily be missing a few...

Jetta Dunn Frost

Howe McDonald Garland

Lumumba Jones Watts

Vince Hogan Garlett

Kent Gawn Pedersen

F: Jamar Tyson Viney

Bench: Cross Grimes Bail

Sub: Salem

Unlucky: Toumpas, Michie, JKH, Newton

This is a far harder exercise than it has been for the past 10 or so years. It'll be interesting to see whether our injury list come round one allows for tough decisions to be made. It'll be great seeing fierce competition for spots all over the ground for the first time in God knows how long.

Jetta Frost Garland

The Prince T Mac Dunn

Cross Vince Howe

Watts Pedo Kent

Garlett Hogan Gawn

Jamar Jones Tyson

Int Grimes, Viney, Salem, Toumpas

Emerg JKH, Fitzy, Mitchie

I believe Dunn could become an effective rebounding half back along with the Prince. Dunn can also switch to half forward while Howe or Watts go back at times. Looking forward to the first practice matches to see what Roos is thinking.

Some quite respectable teams above however I suspect that after reading training reports from January/February and watching the NAB Cup, many will be tempted to include Toumpas and Brayshaw.

I think Colin Garland HAS to be in the starting side round 1 (provided he's fit). There are a few teams without him. It's great we now have more depth which put's more pressure on for spots but IMO he is a lock for a back flank position with Jetta on the other flank. I just can't fit Grimes in. Ex-Capt or not, as he admits, he needs to earn his spot and I don't think there is one there for him ATM. I would love him to be there but he needs to work on some deficiencies first and force his way in.

I am strongly tempted to agree with this ATM and have modified my team (post #4 above). Although injuries over the next few weeks will determine the team, it is certainly harder to exclude players than it has been for a few years.

Sorry to be a pain 'CB', but I think we've had the same conversation for the last few years around this time.

Last year it was the forward line with Clark, Hogan and Dawes...well we know how that ended up.

These things are fun to do but personally I'll wait and have a look at the NAB games, all of them. Then look at the injury list and hope round one is not another disaster.

I do think we are heading the right way though, just being a little cautious.

Reading this thread, it makes one realise how much our list has improved since 2012.

I look at our best 25 or so now, and no longer get anxious/completely depressed. It's actually alright now.

I went without Garland, I had Dunn as my third tall, I think he is quite versatile. Jetta in a back pocket.....flank? I left Garland out purely because if H is on one flank, and with Frost and McDonald are the two talls he becomes surplus to needs. With all this supposed talent coming through, and being a couple years off being a serious threat we need to use this time to blood a youngster/s with elite disposal by foot. De we go a good player who we know what we will get or put game time into someone who has the potential to become elite. Play Salem of a back flank this year and use Toumpas as the sub. Then next year give Salem more time in the midfield and play Toumpas off half back. Kent and Petracca can play forward/mid. Viney, Brayshaw, Tyson, Michie might be better suited to purely a midfield role. Suddenly we have a very versatile/dangerous line up. We won't improve by staying the same, yes I'm aware of who we've drafted and that Hogan is raring to go but there is room for improvement everywhere. I also left Grimes out, I've noticed a few teams have him on the bench. Is he suddenly a midfielder? I would rather Michie or Newton given an opportunity before him. Edited by Al's Demons

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
