Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The Nathan Jones Contract

Well the facts are this. I had a chat with Nate (mate talk) today and he is going to sign up for 7.6 million over 4 years. Provided he averages 19 games per year and 26 possessions there will be an automatic roll over.

Nothing better than an automatic roll over!

This new one will be the fourth Macca's in Ballarat. It's to service the new suburb they are developing in western Ballarat. If you are inferring Ballarat has a high proportion of McDonalds's you are probably right but it's probably no different than anywhere else.

Last time I counted there was Wendouree, Bakery Hill, Sturt Street, Sebas and now Lucas Maccas. Everyone out that neck of the woods will be pressing 100kg with Rotten Ronnies and Lazy Moes out there.

And yeah, don't be a bellend WYL. I am a son of the Rat (and was born in Melton South). I expect that kind of stuff from Daisy.

Heard today he is requesting 5 year 3.5m. Club and player not far away, Term of deal is more the sticking point. Negotiations are continuing, but positive

I call that a bargain! Front end the deal, get our best player locked away until he's past 30, no FA concerns and depending on how much we pay on the first year we will still have a nice bit put away to lure a big name later. Honestly, 700k for our best player is way below what other clubs are paying the top end of their list.

Pay him what he asks, he has earned it.

Couldnt agree more! Stuck fat through the darkest times in the clubs history. We gave the world to a tattoo infested head case who gave us 5 minutes of his AFL career.. (To re-ignite his passion down the coast.. No not blease..)

So i say if Jones wants a long lucrative contract.. Lets give it to him, we cant afford to lose another captain.. Happened to the dogs (griffen) and itd if jones left itd leave a bigger hole than when we sacked McDonald!

The Age is reporting that the Bulldogs will pay $800,00 of Griffin's 2015 salary (yes, even tho he no longer plays for them). This is of interest because it shows what he was being paid as captain of a bottom 4 club and may be a good indicator of what other club captains get and perhaps what Jones should get.

I posted this earlier in this thread as a good option for MFC: I know year 1 looks crazy but think of it over a 4/5 year period:

Post # 37:

Yr 1 - $1.250m

Yr 2 - $750K

Yr 3 - $750K

Yr 4 - $600K

Yr 5 - $250K

So $3.6m over 5 years. Averages @ $840K over 4 years and @ $720 over 5 years so may not be enough.

Why is my suggested year 1 so high you ask:

- we have the salary cap,

- it gives us the sal cap in 2016 to go after an FA,

- if Jones can't play out year 5 risk is quite small (this can be protected further by making it a 4 +1 contract) and

- Jones' sal scales back as our young guns are looking for more.

Knowing what Griffen was getting this type of schedule doesn't look too far fetched. From the Age: "He will earn close to $1million next season and about $1.5million over 2016, '17 and '18. He seems to have been on $1m for 2014 so that is $3.5m over 4 years.

I doubt there is anyone who would say that Griffen to the Bulldogs is worth more (in $ and non-$ vaules) than Jones to the Dees.

Jones is a "heart and soul" player who means something to the club in ways beyond his footy ability. He is the one bloke who we long suffering supporters can to look to with pride every week, to fly the flag and give us something to cheer about. In that sense he is akin to the great Robbie - he is a shining beacon in an otherwise miserable team. Hopefully players like Viney and Hogan and, who knows, a new draft pick can grow into this type of role?

At the moment ,however, Jones is it and, should we lose him, Melbourne would be well and truly on that highway made famous by AC DC.

I have often commented that another reason that many of our young players never develop properly is that we don't have a good tier of mid age footballers to guide these youngsters - to show them what work ethic is required to succeed - recently we have not had players for the youth to aspire to.

This is exactly what Jones brings to the table. Is he a superstar ? No, but we should not underestimate his value to our club apart from his weekly kicks, handballs and hard ball gets.

Griffins best is better IMO but Jones gets it done week in and week out.

For us to march up the ladder we don't need a Griffen every 5 or 6 weeks - we need more Jones' week in and week out.

From Fos Footy: "RICHMOND has signalled plans to lock captain and free agent Trent Cotchin away on a monster long-term deal...and Cotchin would fetch as much as $1 million a year to remain at Richmond"

While I rank Jones equivalent to Griffen I don't think he is as accomplished or as valuable as Cotchin. So if Cotchin is to get $m pa on a long term deal to sstay at Richmond, IMO the schedule I put above which gives Jones an average of $720 pa over 5 years looks reasonable. Hope the club are thinking along the same lines and we hear soon.

Cigars aside Demoneyes, any further update on the Jones contract status?

It's all good and well to draft two new midfielders but would be nice to tie up our best existing one and captain.

Money wise I'd be fairly happy to pay chunk what he wants, it's the five year term that would make me nervous, I am concerned his bash and crash style may only work for so long before the injuries creep in

A very durable footballer 'Sir Paul', I have no problem with the 5 year term.

After the hype with the new recruits dies down I wouldn't be surprised to see the new Jones contract as a Christmas present to the supporters.

I agree rjay, he has certainly earned the term, but five years concerns me for any player, it's interesting hawthorn have stated publicly they sign offer terms longer than four years to any player.

I think they may find it difficult to keep players in the near future then. Free Agency has changed the rules a bit, pre FA there would have been very few deals more than 3 years.

It's becoming more the norm to sign longer term deals now, however as with many of these things they tend to go in and out of AFL fashion.

I really don't care what Hawthorn offer their players. Jones has clearly stated his wish to be signed away to Melbourne for the rest of his career and we should be jumping at the chance, not quibbling over an extra year. Given that ever other senior player with any market value at all has been counting the days until they could go to the Hawks or Cats this is a huge moment for the club and we need to grab it with both hands.

Totally agree. Rich is on the verge of offering Cotchin 5 years as is Geelong with Hawkins. Hawthorn can afford the luxury of 4 yrs but all other teams are going to tie up their stars/must keep players before they get to FA with longer contracts.

Jones is 26 (27 in Jan) so he will turn 31 at the beginning of the contract's 5th year. Still young. If a club worries about potential injuries to players they would all get 1 year deals as injuries are so unpredictable; just part of the game.

But I agree with Rjay announcing his contract will be our Christmas present from the club!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
