Life after Roosy - Michael Voss?

While trying to remain optimistic and positive, there is a very real possibility that at the end of Paul Roos 3 years, we may not have improved significantly because of the time it takes to develop young players and significantly modify a list.

This makes the successor to Roosy an absolutely critical decision.

Could I have people's comments on the possible selecting of Michael Voss as a successor? He is a great communicator, has done an apprenticeship, is recently retired and very current and most of all, very personable and approachable for our younger players.

My first thought was just 'nah', but I has a second thought about it and moved to 'nah, in a more respectful tone'.

On the one hand, I think he was hard done by at Brisbane and is a more competent coach than his sacking suggests. We must remember that the Brisbane board and management have shown themselves to be several kinds of incompetent over a sustained period.

On the other hand... Melbourne are a special challenge requiring a special coach. We need to find a very good match for our circumstances.

It is going to come down to the competence and collaboration of the whole coaching panel.

Who is the best 'collaborative' coach we can possibly get? Hard question, but I don't think it is Voss.

I originally thought he would be ideal...and he still might be, however after watching him on the recruit (I know it's TV etc etc) I found him to be lacking a certain warmth or empathy towards his players. While you need to be a hard taskmaster at times, I also believe you need to be able to relate to players on a more personal level.

This may just be the way the show is edited, it may be the way he has to be for the cameras, I don't know, but based on the show, he comes across as being a little cold. No-one can doubt his knowledge/experience but you also need to be able to relate and communicate with players. His later years at Brisbane seem to indicate that he may have had issues doing that, given the players that left.

Agree... Brett Ratten has a great background and did a good job at the Blues. Now under Clarkson in impressive Hawks program.

I wouldn't have an issue with Voss or Ratten, there is something to be said for someone that has a second chance. I think that and the opportunity to work with Roos would appeal to both of these guys.

I know Goodwin's pedegree, but I still have a level of unease in regards to the fact that he seemed in the thick of the whole ASADA thing when it came out, Dean Wallace, the Weapon, Goodwin seemed to be mentioned as the story unfolded, the question is whether it is by association or direct involvement.

My sense is that the model Roos prefers is for a successor to be someone who learns the Roos way and then implements that model. Someone like Voss or Ratten would have their own beliefs forged in their senior coaching stints.

Goodwin's our man. I can see the headline now after we hammer the pies on QB next year (with Tom McDonald having held TurnClark to a single possession - a kick on the full that from the resulting kick we go coast to coast for the Toump to snap a pearler):
