I was 14 in 1994, an age where footballers are your hero's & David Schwartz was exactly that. I was absolutely devastated when he broke down. I remember sitting in red seat Melbourne members area & people just looking at each other saying how good is this guy, amazing player.

The Nureyev blind turn against the Bulldogs is probably my favourite all-time footy moment. If you watch the replay, you can hear the crowd gasp in collective awe.

One small correction though: the handpass to Lovett in the square was against the Dogs, not the Blues

I'm guessing you've watched the replay more than once.

The fact that David managed to play 173 games after the knee problems he had is a testament to his commitment to footy and his durability.

Lesser men would have given the game away.

A giant of this football club.

He's my number one man crush.

Absolutely loved the way he played.

Wish we had a clone of him to play in the team now.

He has a son

I saw Ox at the Bris game at the Darklands. With a boy that was a spitting image of him, about 8yo. Only about 10 more years until he's ours!

I almost cry watching anything from 1994. Best Melbourne side I have ever seen and we didn't even make it into the GF. The Eagles slaughtered us at the WACA in the Prelimary Final.

Neitz, Shwartz, Tingay, Jakovich, Lyon, Stynes, 2 x Lovetts, Charles.

The Ox is/was a genuine superstar. Pity gambling and dodgy knees stuffed his career.

Melbourne v Adelaide, Round 2, 2001

Great goal from Leoncelli but that punch out from The Ox to set it up - Wow! - my favourite AFL moment. I'll never get sick of watching that clip.

Brilliant article by Jesse Hogan of The Age (not our emerging forward of the same name). If you watch the video, his narration absolutely captures the essence of what it was like to watch the Dees in '94. It's a great reminder that life watching Melbourne was once a joy.

Was forced into being a bomber as a kid. Then I saw The Ox at the G and I walked out a demon. Thanks Ox.

i was 19 in 94 and loving the success of the great team we had, we were setting up for a dynasty it was that good. I think when we had to go to the WACA if I recall was when they changed the finals series structure, im sure DL friends will correct me if im wrong there. We shouldve had a home final at that stage and couldve gone on to greatness.

Ox: Great guy, knew him a tad personally and as a top class footballer. I now stand at the footy with 20-25 yo's and i pity that they havent really seen a MFC side like this......yet. M55 is Alive

I know that Lyon was outstanding the day we beat the Dogs in that '94 semi-final (yep, he kicked 10), but the undoubted highlight was Schwarz. I don't think I've seen any Melbourne player at CHF carve up an opposition like that. It was bloody spectacular.

[censored] Moon - I was with you that day (how could you forget?) You couldn't take your eyes of the prepubescent girl that was sitting in front of us.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
