Big Al was certainly not the best or worst football player I have seen in red and blue but I do remember him starting out in the ruck with some promise.

And I remember Steve Febey commenting on his potential in that position.

As a fullback, not so good! It was not really his position but at the time he was all we had (if I remember correctly) and he battled on as best he could.

However Big Al has a good brain and will succeed in life while many ex football players end up as no hopers.

Good luck Al in your new job.

I'm NEVER one to exaggerate or overstep the mark!

Ok, ok , maybe I did treat him too harshly in my grading ( or is that degrading) of him , but he was a useless footballer and only Bode, Weetra, Mahoney, and Grgic have been worse, in my memory.

And before anyone gets stuck into me for my callous criticism of him , let me point out that I've been a Demons' fan and member for 49 years, and seen more crappy Melbourne players than I care to remember.

Furthermore, up until a few years ago I'd even argue that I've seen more Melbourne games than virtually anyone here, so I'm entitled to make ludicrous judgement calls as I see fit!

You got on board in 1965?

How sad.

Ahhh bring back those blissful Bearded Nicholson years.

I miss those sweet sweet days of mediocrity.

I dream of the team being mediocre

I don't understand the need to completely bag out a footballer.

We don't need to sugar coat it but saying that Nicholson was a limited footballer who had a crack would get the message across wouldn't it ?

You know you're a sad Melbourne supporter when you're watching the Cricketers pay dispute on TV and you spot their lanky CEO and think 'Nicho! One of the Worst kicking actions I've ever seen'.

He's getting more air time now then he ever did with us.

Excuse me but I think I am the reason the dees haven't won a flag since 1964. The first match I ever attended was our first loss of the  1965 season to ( the bombers I think)  Since that day ....... well we all know the story.

Gee that's a hard comment. I can think of many worse players - ones who never played seniors for a start.

Very underrated footballer who polarized opinion a little like Watts. If you were a fan there was plenty to like and if you weren't there was plenty to dislike.

I'm the opposite to you Joeboy, thought he got the most out of himself and played many good games.

Please don't mention him and Watts in the same sentence. He was a crap footballer he had no awareness what so ever. I remember him being disposed of the footy in the goal square and with a turning circle bigger than the Queen Mary couldn't turn around to prevent a goal from the opposition's lumbering resting ruck man.

In the first 8 games we won all of them but in the main it was by a few points.

Round 9 we were thrashed by the Saints and life has not been the same since. Essendon beat us in Round 10

Ended up 7th at season end with ten wins

Essendon finished 4th but went on to win the Premiership

Interesting trivia:

In Round 6, Essendon forward Geoff Gosper was the first VFL player to play with a mouthguard.

James Sutherland has been ruining Australian Cricket for 16 years.

BBL and IPL have diluted talent and made test cricket second fiddle which he could have helped control.

I wish big Al every success against the Araldited Sutherland.

My memory of him was as a serviceable balding fullback .

Did not gather many stats but stopped some big name full forwards when they were kicking big hauls.

Agree Bob.

Pick 22 in the 1996 draft he went onto craft over 100 games with the club over nearly 8-9 years.

Its laughable someone has called him the worst footballer ever to represent the club when pick 11 that year was everyones whipping boy Brett Grgic!!

And if there was a bang for buck about the worst then we blew pick 12 in 2010 on Lucas Cook and he struggled at VFL level without ever looking like getting an AFL game with arguably one of the worst sides MFC has fielded in his history

And to add insult to injury cook played for port last weekend and did a job on weid helping them beat Casey.

Cook really rubbing salt into the wound at every turn!

Think there is a Judge with same name and ABC footy caller too.

Given Simon ex-Coodabeens and the St Kilda player Bromberg  as well, are both now Judges - thought it may have been him.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
