We are all a bit tarnished by Neeld so the first sign of a coach going down the negativity path gets us upset.

That said Neeld really did highlight how to crush a groups spirit so I hope this is just a well timed bake from Welsh.

It's pretty clear Casey are short on talent when it comes to the Casey listed players and tall wise from Melbourne all they have right now is Georgiou and Fitzy which certainly leaves them vulnerable there. That said Evans, Michie, McKenzie should control a game in the midfield (which it seems they did for a half) and some of the others should contribute on the flanks.

So far I'd put it down to some frustration by Welsh. But I don't want to hear more of the same nor do I want to here him bemoaning the 'Melbourne listed' players. All players should be treated relatively equal, it's one team when they run out. If there really is an issue with the Melbourne guys down there it needs to be sorted out with Roos and the development coaches not through the media.

Having read what Welsh supposedly said, I asked him if he rated Welsh as a coach.

He said 'yeah, great coach and even better bloke.'

I was surprised and obviously by my look he asked me why I had asked.

I responded with the remarks that were reported and whether they were on the mark.

He went on to tell me that it was far from how the post match address went.

It was clear possession wise that MFC players are the most important figures at Casey, and most influential in winning games, however on the weekend they produced 27 tackles between them I'm led to believe. 6 by Jordie McKenzie.

Casey are in a development year and lost 3 of their best 4 players to other VFL/EFL clubs and they were the lynch-pin to the club. Everyone down there understands that, as do the Melbourne coaching staff he explained.

He said the only remark Welsh made re. Demons players after game was that during the week he had players ask him what they were doing that was preventing them from playing AFL.. He said look at Paul's gameplan.. You need to be defensive orientated or you will not get a game.

The listed player than produced 27 tackles between them, which defensively is appalling. I can't remember if there was a remark to those effects in his interview but it sounds to me like Welsh is dead-set on the money. Don't head back to Casey padding your stats. Play AFL style footy or else you won't get picked up..

Developing year of not half a team of listed footballers should not lose to a first year standalone side in Coburg. If he's not [censored] off at that as a coach, he never will be.

I don't know Rohan personally, nor do I have any involvement with Casey whatsoever, but the last 5 pages have been incredibly slanderous based on nothing but media hearsay. Whether he is a good coach or not will be assessed at the end of the year, but let's put this bad coach, bad bloke mantra away for the remaining 3 months because it's simply not correct.

Great idea. O'Keefe would be a great get, I think he still has a couple years left in him.

In terms of professional footballers, there is no better teachers than Cross and O'Keefe.

I once heard that Daniel Cross used to keep footballs in his cupboards around the house - so when he opens them, he has to always be sharp.

That is going above and beyond, that is the type of guy I want around the club.

As for O'Keefe, apparently he has lived clean for nearly a decade - Ablett like clean - eating the right things, not drinking, doing the one percenters.

That is the type of guy I want our young blokes to learn from.

The more leaders helping Nathan Jones - the better he is getting, the better those around him are getting.

this guy RO'K is approaching 300 AFL games & it's unlikely he'll make the 300 club this year.

I'd really like to see him come over to the Red&Blue as a player for a season, to play some VFL games, & some AFL games, & help out as an on-field teacher. maybe with a view to becoming an assistant coach, or the VFL coach.

Imagine the young recruits, & not so young, listening & learning, playing alongside a 300 game AFL premiership winning star; helping them to develop into mature players.

The guy is a winner thru & thru, & I think we can gain from RO'K helping us out playing an on-field role, not unlike Chappy this year at the Dons. or Daniel Giansiracusa at the Doggies.

Its been a long while since we in Red & Blue had such a Demon profile, playing alongside our kids, guiding them.

# edit: There is 13 Home&Away games left this season, RO'K is currently on 286 games played, with 13 left in 2014 season = 299.

He's unlikely to get all those 13 games, let alone finals games this season... more likely to be around 292-ish ?

We can get him to 300+. & he can help us develop.

Can't really hide from quotes such as this, they are making mistakes and not learning and playing the "poor me" card. Roos is building a culture on team fundamentals. If you don't learn to do it, then you don't get picked. Individual efforts of 30+ possessions don't mean anything unless you do what is best for the team. The current 22 get that, and the results/efforts are adamant. Those senior listed players in the maggos, need to learn how to do the team things or find somewhere else to play. Simple as that, gone are the days where the MFC plays players on "talent" alone (i.e Sylvia). Learn to do what is best for the team or don't play with the Melbourne Football Club. Simple.

“You’d want to hope that some of these blokes want to play senior footy but [if] they keep making mistakes like that ... every week they come with excuses why they’re not getting a game and [ask] 'why aren’t I getting picked',” Welsh said.

I'm surprised they haven't played Nicholson forward yet. If there's ever going to be a spot in the team for a guy with questionable skills and decision making but top level run and defensive work I would've thought it would be the half forward role that Bail and Riley are currently in.

Can't help but think Strauss forward and Blease back are really just last ditch efforts to find some spark but for them to make it (which is unlikely) it will be in their natural positions.

This is a really interesting approach. Most players are given a clear and public explanation of their failings on the day. Hopefully, they've already been told this before it's published. (I assume it is, but didn't we hear that under the previous administration the players were getting mixed messages from the coaches?) It's quite clear which players are closest to getting a call up (McKenzie and to a lesser extent Michie). It's also clear which ones seem to have difficulty concentrating for four quarters or, if you like, have difficulty bringing the right mindset to the game.

To be fair Allison has been giving credit where credit is due. His appraisals appear measured & delivered in the context of how players performed according to the requirements the coaching group has placed on them. Blease for example has received favourable assessments in the last couple of weeks

Not too many knocking the door down at Casey. Which is, on the one hand, disappointing, but as Allison says repeatedly in his player reviews "xxx knows what he needs to be working on to be considered for the seniors", so they're being given clear directions.

A couple of disappointing names in that list though - Fitzpatrick, Evans, Blease etc. have all been around long enough now to have progressed past the "still learning" phase. Given that they need to produce the goods for 4-5 weeks at Casey before being considered for the seniors, you'd have to start to wonder whether we'll see some of these players this year - or ever (again).

Pleased to see Dom Barry getting a decent wrap. Hopefully he can continue to build on it.

Jordie McKenzie: Jordie played on-ball and half-back. He had 30 disposals and Jordie was clearly our best player for the day over the four quarters. His effort and intensity to win the ball, and play his role and use the ball really well, was very good again. He’s in pretty good form at the moment, so he’s just waiting for his opportunity and a role to open up for him in the senior side.

Hope that sheds some light Steve. I doubt it will though.

With this review I think we can put to bed the Welsh knockers. He's very much in sync with the FD at MFC.

These are really good reviews for us the members and give us a good idea of who is close to selection and who still has work to do. Looks like Jordie is next in line but also that Dom Barry is playing his role which is a crucial ingredient in Roos sides, can't see him being delisted as some have called for if he keeps this up.

Blease isn't a surprise at all. The surprise would be if he mastered defensive footy!

Fitzpatrick is one who I think got a bit ahead of himself with a few good games last year and is struggling to adapt to Roos style footy. Also has been changed from little ruck to a lot more ruck. I expect him to still take more time because learning rucking, learning how to be physical at the contest is going to take a while.

Evans is the one I'm most disappointed in because he's had some good reviews. He's had a brief taste of AFL level. He's got the fitness, he hasn't been injured like Michie. And probably besides McKenzie he should be close to the team and could come in and play half forward, wing, patches at half back or even be made in to a tagger considering he has some fitness, speed and physicality.
