The continuing saga of Melbourne's injury list - 2014

I don't think there's ever an excuse for losing by 100+ points, it's a total destruction of a team and it's rarely just down to the other team being that good, the losing team also has to be that bad. But we are totally directionless when going forward so you'd hope that once he get some sort of forward line that we'll be able to take better advantage of our holding of the ball. Suddenly a movement that ends with us turning it over and it going up the other end results in a shot on goal.

I'd be very surprised if we would be belted like last week if we had our first choice forward line playing.

Weather our forwards would dominate is questionable but they would kick valuable goals and provide a target and provide a contest for our forwards and mids to feed off. Our mids must start hitting the scoreboard regularly too.

Does seeking medical intervention on regular occassions count for a medical qualification, if so he is qualified

Excuse me?

Your attempt at trying to use seeking regular medical attention as an insult is extremely disrespectful. Grow up mate.

Try and stop ridiculous posts and I may think otherwise.

I have spent months trying to figure out if you're a troll but I seriously doubt you're that smart

Someone with a background in the industry has spent a great deal of time explaining something to you through this thread and you continue with stupid questions about the injuries. How does it happen in pre season etc - have you ever done a pre-season at elite level, it's a little bit different to jogging around the block, all teams have injuries, we just happen to have all our talls down at the moment.

Does anyone pay any attention to what they read about injuries on the club website? It's a load of rubbish. I posted this on the MFC Facebook page, but we should be entitled to transparency from the club RE: injuries. They need to stop stringing along the supporters. The perfect example is Chris Dawes for most of last year. Now Hogan's injury keeps being pushed out further.

I literally wait until they run out on game day, before I consider any MFC player fit nowadays.

Today Roos has said Dawes is a couple of weeks off, Jamar is going to play VFL, and Hogan says he is finally feeling ready to take on a heavy load again. But the aim for him is now... you guessed it... 4 to 6 weeks. So round 10 at the earliest for Hogan

2 plus 4-6 doesn't add up to ten

4 to 6 weeks doesn't add up to 4 to 6 weeks. I'll be surprised if we see him by June.

Hexed!

I will believe it when they are running around in the AFL dropping chest marks...

hehe.......funny

The news about Dawes from Misso is encouraging but surprising. I would say he'll have to get through a full VFL game before we bring him in, or at the very least a half.

Hopefully the talls pain could be easing over the next few weeks with Jamar and Garlo playing VFL this week and Dawes the following week.

Generally I'd agree but with our dearth of tall forwards and the performance of the team will it really matter if he is straight into the seniors? If he reinjures it again well he would have done that anyway and we play a player down for the rest of the game having taken a chance. If he has to be managed through well at least we get a forward target for at least part of the game. I'd rather see players like Viney & Hogan eased back through the reserves and Dawes & Garland straight back into the side - I mean what do we really stand to lose?

Judging by team selection for this week, it would appear that, despite the concerns expressed by many, we seem to be making some progress on the injury front.

We have a squad of 25 selected for Sunday's game of which I assume two will not travel to Sydney, leaving 16 to play for Casey which would be above the usual average of past years in the early part of the season.

We have 40 on the senior list, 4 rookies and our international zone rookie Maia Westrupp who most likely would have played in the Casey development team but for the fact that it has a bye.

That leaves the following players not in action at the weekend due to injury/illness -

Jesse Hogan (TBA)

Chris Dawes (a week or two away)

Mitch Clark (indefinite)

James Strauss (mystery injury of the week)

Colin Garland (close to a return)

Max Gawn (close to a return)

There's obviously still some frustration over not having those key forwards, but at least there's some hope on the horizon. Next week we play Carlton who have a fairly long injury list and they've just lost Kreuzer for 12 - 14 after getting rid of Hampson and Jacobs a couple of years ago leaving them with only Warnock to carry the ruck duties.

Our injury list actually hasn't been too bad this year, unfortunately it's like free kicks it's not how many you get but where you get them that counts.

Id say if Strauss is injured that it would pretty much be it for him. Couldnt see him coming back from another injury and performing to warrant himself a place on the list again.

Posted

What excuse for losing by 100 points will we be able to use once most of our tall players are back

No excuses - we will use the reasons instead - and the reason is that at this stage our players aren't good enough.

We can go down the Richmond path. Delidio is out this week with a "mystery" injury. I referred to my medical text books and couldn't find a references to "mystery" injuries anywhere.

What if he's out due to a head cold?

I've no problem with Richmond declining to disclose what is wrong with Deledio and I don't really have a problem with them declining to say when he'll be back.

The problem is if they say next week and it's 3 or 4.

Dawes ran out on game day last year and didn't play. To avoid dissapointment I wait for the opening bounce for a player to be declared fit.

My concern with injuries is that we don't seem to be able to bring players back to best/good form after injury. Players that are no longer the same:

Frawley - shoulder

Strauss - leg

Trengrove - foot

Clarke - foot

Grimes - various

Dawes - ?

That is our spine right there!

I know we lost our long standing doctors 2.5 years ago after they fell out with Neeld. Whether it is medical expertise or the players lose motivation having to play in bottom side after all their rehab work who knows. Something isn't working and it is distressing to see proven/potential top players languishing as average players or not getting on the park at all.

Such a voice of reason has no place on these forums. BE GONE!

I'll believe there's progress when i see them running around on the park kicking butt.... we couldn't have had a worse start to an opening of a season than this IMO. Well, unless we lost say the Jones boy as well to injury pre season (touch wood and my block head).

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
