You are taking the P155 arent you? Watts did not whinge he mearly highlighted the difference between now and previous coaching groups and that he wished he had had this all the way along. That is a ligitmate comment and not beng a softkok as you put it,

Are you seriously equating the requirements of todays modern footballers with those who played the game in the 50s 60s and 70s? Are you suggesting that player effort was the missing element in Neelds game plan or maybe that Watts and the other players should collectively design and implement the the structures required to play todays game in opposition to the coaches coz they obvioulsy weren't working. Maybe they should all go out and get medical or sport scence degrees so they can work out there own training loads and biomechanics while they are about it?

I doubt you will find a coaching group in the AFL who dont understand the need to train the mind at least as much as the body. They all spend considerable time and effort in developing and training these boys minds because very often that is the difference. Are you sugesting that payers should just do it and we are wasting money and time on this. Of course the coaches have enormous impact on the mental side of the game in every club, successful as well as ones like ours. Thats not a weakness inherent in modern humans its just human nature. Read some books on great leaders if you dont believe me.

There is no logic in your statements. The game today is very different from the one played by the players you note. Its not as simple as trotting out a series of cliches and expecting the players to be "hard at it" or "get there head over the ball" or "dont think DOOO!!" and have that result in wins. If it was we would have recuited Danny Frawley to coach us.

my comments re=wilson/murphy/skilton were based on the fact ,they played in krap teams and never gave up and also led for their respective clubs with great admiration from me and many others.

its pretty simple,the players have had 6 years of maybe krap coaching,but have also had 6 years of opputunity and i would say quite a number have failed to grasp those chances.

I used to work in the public service. that kind of dysfunction was business as usual in each department I worked in, and the nature of 'must follow legislation as passed by parliament, until new legislation is passed by parliament' is the embodiment of top-level paralysis. I completely agree with the comment that there can be very capable, and even passionate, people at middle level who either leave or become 'problem staff' (selective compliance, minimum possible work, all that jazz) or leave at first opportunity.

The top levels are ultimately responsible for whether serious staff can really get things done, and the damage bad executive leadership can do in a pretty short space of time is incredible to watch.

There's a brilliant expression dating back a couple of hundred years, French, maybe Talleyrand (such an interesting crook himself), saying 'people continue to be promoted until they reach a level at which they fail, and then they stay there'.

Anyway, the point? I have a lot of sympathy for the players, coaching panels, and club staff who might have been dragging their heels these last few years, even unconsciously. But at the same time... you can't drag your heels and expect to be an AFL player for very long.

The Peter Principle is a management theory which suggests that organizations risk filling management roles with people who are incompetent if they promote those who are performing well at their current role, rather than those who have proven abilities at the intended role. It is named after Laurence J. Peter who co-authored the 1969 humorous book The Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong with Raymond Hull. What a completely hacked thread.

A Poster passes on snippets of a general conversation of how much better his workplace is after the CEO & Senior Coach were removed and replaced with people who actually know how to do the job(s) correctly, and gets a hard time.

Personally i am glad that JW now feels better about the place.

It was obviously Clown School before and not pleasant to work in.

Sad thing is while the requirements of being an AFL player have increased over the last 40 years, many of our blokes (to be fair though, some of the main culprits have gone) still went out and got on the gas like it was still the 70's. I have heard PLENTY of stories about how the Demon party boys were fixtures in the Melbourne nightlife.

It's hard to take this whole 'It's Neeld's/Bailey's fault and none of ours' line when most of them were qualifying for captain of the drinking team as opposed to the captain of the MFC.

I'm still quite sure of the archaic usage of a similar expression in 19th century France (history's bon mot factory) but the Peter Principle as you've quoted would definitely be the path that made it an expression in my family and various circles - 'promoted to their level of incompetence' gets wheeled out a lot about school 'leaders'. :D

Dead set SD. People acting like they actually give a sh*t about these forums. Truth be told, they probably think what a bunch of losers we are. We won 8 games in 3 seasons, it's not exactly a shock that poor coaching was involved. Omg a footballer said it, hold the pressers!!!!

Hard done by they may well feel; now is the time to show one and all just how let down they really feel, by playing all season like their lives depend upon success.

Without reading all the posts, with respect we were c**p during much of the journey '65 - 14, which is the train i have been stuck on. perhaps the worst moment being our choke in the '87 prelim: the very moment we could have reclaimed our mantle of somethingness. as for neeldy, why can him for saying he wanted to make our team the most feared to play against? i was certainly scared. we should be wary of pre-season bravado, we have been there before. round one is when it matters. the heightened expectations will collapse quicker than a stack of cards if we get flattened against the Saints. Wattsy shouldn't be offering these opinions: loose lips sink ships.

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.
