Brian Lake's premiership with Hawthorn is evidence enough for Chippa to wait and see what happens.

It also tells him he's got another contract past this one and it is not critical to his premiership dream to move just yet.

Posted

You are still missing the point. He is doing what any logical person in the same situation would do. It is not cause for blowing your lid.

Not blowing my lid at all. If he goes he goes.

We then use the system to recruit a suitable replacement.

But it is never good when a senior player holds off contract negs before the season has even started.

Not about the issue of him potentially going, about the fact he is stalling talks. Of course it's not ideal but it's perfectly understandable. Anyway, going round in circles here.

Pies forecast signing Bucks, Reid, Swan & Lumumba by R1 last Friday. Bucks talks haven't heated up yet but Swan, Lumumba done today.

The difference between a successful club that has consistently played finals and who want to stay to our club that has just had consistent seasons of nothing. This will keep happening until we start winning with players holding off talks.

The problem is if you take out all emotion and look at it from a purely detached, logical point of view every decent player we have would do what a sensible person would do and leave to go to a better club. Professional sports can't be void of emotion from the supporters or the players otherwise you will not succeed. We need to create an environment where players love the club and don't just love playing professional football - some clubs have this and while it is generally related to success or the possibility of success that is not always the case.

So, it is a fact, is it?

Anyone know where we're at wrt the salary cap this year?

The floor is 95% now is it not.

Depending on the circumstances we may be in new waters for a club of matching (or preparing to) match an offer.

No one matches the offer, with a bit of luck they will keep compensation picks for FA this season.

I think the AFL, given their backing of Roos and PJ, would be looking at this situation very closely.

No chance FA compensation will be dropped, given the likelihood of Frawley leaving us.

And if we make the eight?

And maybe win a final?

make the 8? Play finals?lol... Are you serious?

Frawley has put contract talks on hold.... even with all the positive scribble that goes on this time of year, about how great we are looking.... If Frawley can't see us playing finals yet, how can you?

You are assuming that his postponing contract talks implies he is sure we won't make the finals. Doesn't automatically follow. Any old argument will do to dampen any optimism anyone is foolish enough to express.

What optimism , once again your embarrassing yourself just like Schwab debacle.

One thing for sure barring injury, I expect an A grade season from Frawley this year. Be it to up his value for a new suitor or to help rejuvenate our frazzeled club. I don't expect to see any vapid and listless performances like he sometimes delivered in our recent limbo and/or purgatory period.

True, but it won't stop 4,000 posts.

Frawley would be a maniac to commit now after what he's been through. Plenty of people think that being drafted to Melbourne can mean the end of your career. That's the type of toxic name we have, If he hasn't reached an agreement by round 15 I'd say there's genuine cause for concern, until then he's doing what he should be, i.e. testing the waters.

I also believe that if we have the type of improvement we all expect then he'll stay.

If he stays, he stays. If he goes he goes. If he sees light he'll stay. If he doesn't he'll go. And rightly so. It's one thing being part of the solution and another to be a punching bag. If we're crap again with no more hope than previously he'll be no more than a punching bag and I'll wish him well.

I find that interesting because we have had no bigger punching bag than Wattsy who also had to consider his future and felt the future had some direction with Roos. Each player might be considered differently in supporters eyes but the football club is the same ie was a toxic environment so neither should be blamed for weighing up the alternatives. I wish James well and hope the media don't harass him for months. He has every right to make his decision when he chooses given he still has 9 months left on his contract.

The club is NO longer the toxic place it was.

Chips entitled to look around.. So are we.

He we go another one.

Lets se if he gets back to his A game and no injuries. If not he is free to go.

Again. Not end of the world.

Hes just one cog in a far bigger machine. Our fortunes hardly revolve around him.

Hes good...not brilliant.

The optimism expressed by pitmaster suggesting 8 wins/finals of course. You are so keen to insert the knife, very sad really.

Can anyone tell me how this restricted free agency thing works? If we match an offer from another club is Chip locked in to the terms of that contract with us? By that I mean the length of the contract. So for example if the Suns were to offer 6 or 8 years for X dollars and we match it, is Chip locked in to being a Dee for that period? If so this could work out in our favour and it would be smart management to make sure our gun players fall out of contract in their restricted years rather than unrestricted years.

Did anyone answer this as it seems a great ploy for keeping the services of top players for the weaker clubs; though I think it's about the player ACCEPTING the offer and then us matching it.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
