Name 3 players you are keen to see in 2014 and why

True, although I never said I admired him OD. In truth there's only one of our players I would say I wholly admire and that is Jones. Clark and Frawley are close. Almost the entire list have everything still to prove.

I have a soft spot for Blease because he does do the odd freakish thing that not many are capable of doing. When your team is in such a deep trough, you'll take what you can get. That's not to understate the shortfalls in his game.

You sit there at the game and you go how did that happen? How did he do that? And you go home and watch it and realise that there is something that this guy can do that does not fit with your own experience or even imagination. Too often in recent times it has been an opposition player that has had that impact with me. There have been flashes, hints from a number of our guys. The endeavor of Jones, Frawley, Garland, McDonald, McKenzie and others is beyond dispute and Howe is a constant adrenalin rush.

There are many others that show great promise. Clark and Dawes are fantastic professionals and let us pray for ongoing fitness.

At this stage I do not think that Blease is the equal on performance to any player I have mentioned and many more as well. The reality is, however, that he is our only "how did he do that" guy.

Clark does something fantastic and you can see the skill, Bleese kicks a goal and and you go - what?

Please Paul and crew get him fit, do not constrain him and let us cry from the stands Bleeeeeeeese.

I'm hoping that Jimmy Toumpas silences those monday morning quarterbacks who wanted to pick Ollie Wines before him. It's a long race, and he is behind, but he will be a beauty I reckon.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Jesse Bhogan and Viv Michie.

Really? I can't think of too many how did Blease do that moments. I can't think of a lot more why did Blease do that moments when he does something stupid.

Howe is our how did he do that guy! Jack Viney winning clearances putting his head in places he shouldn't makes me take notice. As does the very rare Jack Watts moment. And maybe Jack Fitzpatrick, to see him run away from players at his height is great to see.

Blease has raw legspeed. He will/does do the odd turn on the after burners, blow past an opponent and put it on the boot for a long goal. But I'm yet to see any other trick that a guy with speed can pull off. Not many run down tackles, not many sustained bounces along a wing, not many link ups in to open space. Some more of them and I might get interested

Sam is not living up to my hope that he can become Bluey Adams Mark 2. Maybe Roosy will bring it all out of him.

Dom Tyson- i would love to see his highlight package in games. He is a very talented lad and i think may even be able to have a real impact next year.

Daniel Cross- Would love to see why he has been such a good player over such a long period of time, also his on field leadership qualities.

Jack Trengove- finally would love to see Trenners get it going, injury free and with some speed.

Obviously we want to see Toumpas, Clark on the field and Viney.

Posted

Dom Barry - I don't give this guy much chance of making it, needs to add muscle. I want this guy to harden up and dominate the VFL so he gets his chance to play on the G, otherwise it may be a short time at the MFC.

Lynden Dunn- strong body, good burst of speed, dedicated to the Dees, experienced, booming right foot. So what has gone wrong and why so many haters? I hope he puts a good season together.

James Strauss - so many injuries, but this guy can play, and his great disposal by foot, is an area we have struggled with in our backline and has cost us so many goals, like Jimmy Bartel is trusted with kick ins at Geelong because his disposal and decision is so good, we need this sort of player and Straussy could be it.

Jack trengove

Jimmy toumpas

Jack watts

All with something to prove under a new coach and new game plan, im expecting a big year for the three of them.

The ways things are being set up,it looks like they will be go to players through the midfield,so cant wait to watch them in action, bigger fitter stronger.

Fitzpatrick, because everyone talks about the big 3 and ignores him.

Gawn, because a good ruck with his size would be great.

Fitzpatrick, for the same as before

I agree i would have Fitzy penciled in for round 1 instead of Dawes.

If they're both 100% fit, that's ridiculous. What attributes does Fitzpatrick bring that Dawes doesn't have.

Taller, quicker and can ruck (not well but better than Dawes) but Dawes will get the nod.

Why would he get the nod if Fitz is 'taller, quicker and can ruck better'?

Posted

Dom Tyson - integral to our future now, and with his run of injuries whilst at GWS, I actually Havnt seen very much of him yet.

Jesse Hogan - because, Jesse Hogan!

JKH - just pips Toumpas and Trengove (as they could effectively be new mids for us if they improve this season). JKH is showing some good early signs and I'm tipping to get some surprise early games. We are desperate for some speed and pressure in the forward half more than it has been noted, IMO.

I like your choice of JHK. I think that he could be the big surprise for 2014 just like Howe was when he debuted.

You don't think he is taller, faster or a better ruck? The first 2 are facts the 3rd (ruck) would be hard to debate.

He will get a game because at the moment he is seen as the better player and the position is for a key forward.

Posted

Dawes will get the nod because he is primarily there to kick goals and be a physical presence, and he is better at both than Fitz.

Fitz will be called upon though. Hopefully he can get enough opportunity to build upon the momentum gained this season.

I was simply curious as to why you gave evidence for one conclusion then proffered another conclusion.

And he is 'seen' as the better player?

Dawes is better than Fitz.

And, more to the point Pman intimated above - Dawes serves an important role Fitzpatrick will not be able to do anytime soon if ever.

I am very happy with how Fitzpatrick is developing. I have read on here that the previous FD did not rate him - that indifference has helped his development - he has honed his leading, marking, and positioning down at Casey.

However, he plays a different role to Dawes and doesn't do what he does well better than Clark and Hogan.

dazzledavey36....are you serious? Dawes premiership player vs Fitzpatrick the unco awkward forward/ruck...picture being the opposition defender for a second Dawes or Fitzpatrick....experienced forward vs 30 game(approx) forward...have a think about it. Shame on you.

I think we have a pretty good idea of what Clark and Dawes can do - when they are fit. At 22, having played 14 senior games, I suspect there may be a little bit of upside left in Fitzy.

I just dont rate Dawes that highly to be honest. Only my personal opinion but i dont think we will ever see a fully fit Dawes on the park especially with his ongoing knee problem he has to battle for the rest of his career. He will play games at 70 to 80 % fit but never 100 %. As already been mentioned Fitzy is more quicker, taller, good turn of speed, and a better overhead mark aswell. You can never question his leadership and courage but i think Fitzy has massive upside and i can see it be untapped under Roos.

Posted

Don't forget Fitz has an elite, repeat sprint ability for his height.

He can make 60 metre leads back and forth from forward to the wings all game. That in itself is a huge tactical weapon.

Admittedly, Dawes isn't too bad in that area either - but if Fitz develops further, he will get games onhis tactical advantage alone.

Did you know Mitch Morton was a Premiership player? Or what about Shannon Byrnes? I bet he is your pick for Forward pocket ahead of Kent and JHK.. Funny how you say Fitzy is awkward unco yet i watched him towel up Heath Grundy (premiership backman that is... you know the ones you love?) against the swans and kick 4 goals against the Lions. I must have saw different to you because i saw huge potenial with this guy. If i was a defender id rather side up against the lumbering Dawes with a wonky knee to be quite honest.

Id probably swap Fitzy for Dawes and have Hogan push up to a CHF and have fitzy next to Clark. Two 200cm tall forwards in the goal square to kick isn't a bad idea for me.

Fitzpatrick kicked four goals in at least one AFL game in a losing side with appalling inside fifty delivery. Show some respect.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
