^^ I spoke to senior Dogs player last weekend (was mates with his older brother at school). The players are upset that Cross is gone and rolled his eyes when he mentioned "list management, whatever that means". Also said he'll be great for our young players.

Mentioned also that the last match of this year when we played them was a tough match and we hit em hard - obviously not hard enough to win though.

Forgot Nicholson was a no show today, there was one missing and took me to now to figure out

Trengove is looking fit

Some of the running partnerships

McDonald and Grimes. I asked Tommy Mc afterwards about Grimesy, he said when fit will challenge him over 3 k, how to feel part of it, comparing shoulder op scars with Tommy Mc. His was bigger and newer, sounds rude.

Nathan Jones and Toumpas, so take that as Toumpas has come back ready to fire

Trengove and Matt Jones, so Jones is a good runner

Watts and Howe

Clisby and Terlich

Frawley and Dunn

Hogan with Viney and Michie, then thundering by himself

And as in the photos, Cross and Barry, a coach call methinks

McKenzie was also in rehab group, forgot him as well, another one easing back in, none of them looked particularly crocked

We won three quarters in that game, it's just that they absolutely smashed us in one and put enough on to win the match.

27 disposals in his last game of the season. Against us. He doesn't need to be reborn. He just has to be Eveready. Keep on Keeping On.

Has anyone noticed at training whether we are looking at point kick in strategies? Here is one area where I hope Roos is looking at. Bit early I admit but gee I hope we construct some competitive strategies for getting the ball out of our backline and conversely how do we hold the ball in from opposition kick outs. Some serious progress in these areas would help stem the beltings we saw last year and the years before that.

If truth be known it was probably not much more than ½ a quarter (the second) in which they scored seven unanswered goals. Of course they did a similar thing when we played them the first time at the G but we won that one.

We were hammered in the midfield during both of those down periods and on many other occasions during the season. I don't expect us to be that vulnerable next year given the changes in midfield personnel and the changes in the coaching department.

I'm not interested in doing reports this year and nor do I have anything like the spare time I had last year, but I did manage to get down for an hour yesterday.

Just a couple of observations, as it's obviously very early in the year:

Skills were rubbish in the few centre square stoppages I witnessed. Missed handballs and kicks were on show. It's nothing concerning, more a reality at this time of year when skills are rusty.

I loved seeing ROOOOSY. He operates so differently to Nerd it's not funny. Roos is a real observer. He doesn't chat too much with his fellow coaches if there's information to dissect. He studied the 200 and 400 metre run throughs intently. He was seeing who was keeping up and who was dropping off and at the beginning of the runs he was close to the group seeing who were the vocal leaders encouraging each other on. He doesn't miss a beat. During the same exercises last year Nerd was 100 metres away chatting in groups. The contrast was Stark.

The other noticeable was Toumpas. i was surprised to see how fit he was. He ran with Jones the whole session and kept up to his pace right til the end. Matt Jones also shaded Trengove, but it was pretty close.

Why do you need to do a bash Neeld, rather than just a report, I was at most of the early sessions last year and Neeld and Misson watched at close quarters

Roos spent most of the session in discussion with both George Stone and Jade Rawlings, I was there for the whole session

All the players have stopwatches on their wrist, it is not a race it is a matter of doing conistent times, you see them click at the start and finish

Roos also spoke with Brett Allison . I watched him closely and when there was information to dissect he was observing intently. His conversations were during "down time".

Yes, I'm aware of the players watches. Thanks.

I'm not doing a "report" I'm distinguishing between two coaches and they way they operate at training. I disagree with your observations of the two.

And yes, I noticed you wandering around.

Look at any other teams kick in strategies. Not hard to dissect. It is about the ability to work hard and present, not once, not twice but multiple times until your opponent drops off or you find a hole in the zone. Number one thing to eliminate from last year is laziness from the players in the defensive 50 and we are more than half way there. ( I felt sorry for the poor bastard at full back kicking out last year who would look up the ground and see concrete pillars wearing Melbourne jumpers)

it seems rather childish to be name calling at this point in time. I think we all feel confident about PR's approach to training and to the assistants. Things did not work well under Neeld but it is silly to be abusive about that now!

It's time to let go of the Neeld bashing. He's not the first or last coach to not make it at a struggling club. For all its worth, the guy is now trying to find work back in the teaching game as his prospects in senior coaching were absolutely destroyed by the media and the club's performances in general.

Maybe let him be hey fellas.

Agree Trengove's arms look bigger but doesn't seem to look hard and defined - still looks like a teenager with puppy fat.

Jack Trengove will be very formidable player this year, and will eventually show himself to be vastly superior to Scully. He will be one of our elite.

This question is probably hard to answer given the nature of the current training, but have you seen Toumpas kick the ball any distance? Most passages of play I've witnessed shows him kicking nice passes but nothing really penetrating.

I'm sure he's a nice guy friend wise mmm'kay but I'll never get over his smug attitude. He made these ridiculous assertions about toughest team to play, and not only did he fail that we were the weakest. He threw out good players, and made poor captaincy selections. As it's come out since his dismissal he thought he was greater than the players and club with his authoritative coaching style, completely blew relations with most players.

I feel bad for him, he followed Mick M too closely, but the trouble was after 3 premierships Mick demands respect from his legacy. Mark needed to earn respect and he never got the memo.

Be watching that one a bit myself, he's always looking for the short option. Maybe that will change with the new coach and game plan.

I thought the "hardest team to play against" was in response to what he wanted to make the MFC into. What would you have said, "to be a mediocre team", "to sometimes be a hard to play against, other times easy".

He hoped, tried and failed. We have a new coach - time to move on.

But If you're and outsider and read DL I wouldn't be surprised if you thought he hung out with CW, kicked an old lady down the stairs, was a smug racist and in his spare time kayaks out to sea and turns back the boats, slashed your tyres, was a struggling mayor of Toronto, and pooped on your car.

Well that's all true, but there's also a negative side to Mark Neeld;)

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
