Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We need to sign Frawley asap

If I was Chip I wouldn't even look at anything Melbourne put on the table until around July. For all the Roos hoopla (and I really want to believe in it) we are still a dysfunctional basket case until we prove otherwise.

Well I must be about the only person who thinks any focus on Chip is unbalanced and misdirected. He does not make the team. he's a cog. As long as we continue this idea of we're no good if such and such isnt in the team then we are cactus.

if he wants to stay, thats great. if he wants to go , get over it and move on.

Now if his salary is the 11th highest at the club or greater - he is unrestricted and he can do what he likes...

There is a curveball.

(Listening to Land madly making a list of players possibly paid more...)

Ok, you arrogantly handsome bastard - I will do it:

Clark, Dawes, Jones, Trengove, Grimes, Vince, Garland, and Watts are the only players I can see being paid more than Frawley even if he was paid a lower than market salary.

So I think we should be ok. He will be a RFA.

Ok, I will clear up the confusion with Restricted FA (bookmark this page in your browser of choice):

A club extends an 'offer sheet' of sorts to a player from another club. If that player would like to go to that club he can sign it. If his club would like to keep him, they may say "we will meet that contract."

At this point, the player can sign with his club or go through the ND or the PSD. In the NBA - a restricted FA must remain with his club if his club meets the offer sheet, but that is not the case in the AFL.

Frawley can agree to go to a team and we can 'meet his contract' and he can still go through the drafts.

Please understand this - it might save you some headaches later on (hopefully not heartaches...).

That's not the full story - there's another option in there - we match the offer, but he still insists he wants to go to that club and he's unsure he can get there via the draft - then we can trade him to that club (or another club if he agrees).

if it were...big IF, then this would most likely occur. Might as well get some pennies for the pound as it were.

Fwiw. I think he'll stay. but whatever.

And another option - he stays on the salary that the other club offers.

Or he rejects the other clubs offer and stays on the terms we would like.

I should make a Process Model...

Nah.

I'd think the AFL would like the FA system to be simple and pretty much B&W. They'd hate these twists and turns to occur with a valuable player. It might be seen as manipulating the spirit of free agency. IMHO GC and Melbourne would be told make an offer, match the offer or don't, and leave it at that. Are there any other FAs of note that have got to another club by nominating for ND, PSD or trade rather than use the FA system?

We have been trying to get him signed since mid last year. My understanding was he was almost traded 3 weeks ago so we wouldn't lose him to Free Agency in 2014.

It would appear that they were confident enough he is/will going to re-sign because he wasn't traded. Again this is based on fact not speculation!

Well, no, but the system is two years old.

Hawthorn could have 'met' that ridiculous Franklin wage but that wouldn't have been the end of it - he could have gone to Sydney through the draft if he wanted to.

Hawthorn wouldn't have got Pick 19 though.

I said this before - if I was Hawthorn I would have put that threat out and said we will trade him. They didn't, they thought a whinge would be better and that's that.

And, you are right, there should be less doubt about it; it should be like the NBA. But I really do wonder if the Players Assoc. know what they are getting themselves into as they push for US style 'freedoms' for players.

That way leads to players traded without their consent, non-guaranteed contracts, and clubs re-signing players against the players will (which is what we would be talking about here if the AFL had an NBA like system).

It's simple.

He'll be offered a monster contract.

If we don't improve, he'll go.

But we'll have a horribly early draft pick.

And then with compo we'll have the following pick.

Probably more than we'd get in a trade.

If we improve, the draft pick compo wouldn't be great, but he stays anyway.

If he still wants to go, compo has been removed and we've made it clear to him we'll match the offer...

We match the offer, as we'll have space.

We then tell him we'll take him in the ND or PSD as we'll have an earlier pick than GCS.

And we force GCS to trade us Prestia for Frawley.

Win / win / win..?

Provided the AFL don't take away the compensation pick next season which would be our luck.

Except this puts us ahead of Chip and GC in the power pecking order, which is not what FA was designed for. It's supposed to be about long serving players given the opportunity to move with greater ease to the club of their choice.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
