Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

James Magner - What is his future?

Hi Guys,

First time posting a thread here but I was wondering if anyone knew what the future holds for Jimmy Magner. I guess the fact we have brought in several mids this trade period means he may be on the outer. As I understand it, we are obliged to promote him off the rookie list next season or he can walk for nothing.

I really like him and can't understand why he didn't get a go last year after racking up 50 touches at Casey at a time we were calling out for experienced bodies. I really feel he is the type of bloke that Roos will love - I no nonsense battler that gives his all. Roos built sides around guys like that...guys that weren't just pure talent but had that competitive drive.

Anyway, just throwing it open to the Demonlanders to discuss and to see if anyone knows the inside goss on Mags.

I'd like to see him promoted.

He adds midfield depth, and in a weak draft I'd prefer to have a ready to go Magner running around rather that using a late draft pick on a kid.

Magner started 2012 with a bang and is a contested ball machine, as he tired through the season and for other team reasons he was used as a defensive half forward, which didn't really suit him.

Put him back in the guts where he belongs.

Yes, it was an absolute mystery to me that in such a poor midfield, particularly physically, he couldn't get a run at all last year.

As you say, he looks "a Roos type of player". Some proven value as compared with a late speculative pick ( but again never forget that Chris Grant and James the Injector were both overlooked multiple times by every club and ended upon the last round or thereabouts.)

If we can't re-rookie him (I'm unsure as to the rules but I believe we cannot) he should be promoted on a one year deal, nothing more.

Hopefully we further bolster our midfield next season and then he won't be required but at the moment he is a better option than some of the other guys who are getting a game in the middle and he works his ass off, harder than most.

I'd also like too see him promoted. Shamefully overlooked for selection last year, just another in a string of questionable decisions.

He will certainly be on the outer now with the new signings but I like him and hope he gets a few more chances in 2014 under Roos.

You would have to say that if a midfielder can't crack a regular game in the Dees 2013 midfield then the future looks bleak.

Then Roosy might have a different take.

i might be wrong but i seem to remember a player can be rookied for a third year if he agrees to it

As I remember, that only applies to interstate rookies.

he might be just the workmanlike putty that Roos loves to mould....or a pink DCM !!

Is an enigma in the context of this list

Gone either by trade or by delisting. Dont know why he was overlooked but given our ordinary midfield I am guessing it was maybe discipline or attitude and that means bye!!

...or maybe he was being overlooked by one of the worst coaches in VFL/AFL history. Either or.

The only reason i can see that he didn't get games this year was that he must have been not been quick enough with decision making at AFL level.

Can he get better in this area?

Now it may have been a Neeld decision, but then Craigy didn't play him either.

Over to you James.

Craig ignored him too.

Too slow, short kick of the ball.

VFL standard and will be lucky to keep a spot on the list.

True re Craig. Perhaps by that stage Mags had gotten the shits entirely and attitude did come into play. We are speculating.

Granted he is no superstar, but when played in his natural position he was serviceable.

Definitely underrated by a number on here I think.

The biggest problem as i see it for James was he couldnt break into a team that didnt have Vince, Cross, Tyson , Michie and /or a fit and firing Trengove

and now he has to contend with them.. Good luck with that one

When our team couldn't even get our hands on the ball, and Viney out for half a season with his foot injury, it still baffles me that Magner wasn't getting a game when he was getting leather poisoning in the 2's.

I know our uncontested possessions were poor and we needed outside runners, but it would have also been nice to win some clearances too.

I actualy like the bloke and could not understand why he did not get a game, but if you are getting 50 odd touches in the Magoos and cant get a gig in the ones especially given the state of our midfield then you are gone.

I agree but the fact he still did not get a game in the worst midfield in the comp by a country mile must mean that his game style lacks basic skills that are needed.

Neeld for his faults was a very successful midfield coach....

Something is lacking in James' game that we the outsider are not privvy to.

Both coaches kept him in the Magoos....

Yep...I agree. There has/had to be a reason for it. It's just a little hard to see.

Who knows what Roos will see in him? He may be a fan, or he may be delisted.

Kirk was slow and had shonky disposal and look what happened to him.

IMO we could do worse than have Magner for depth. It's depth that creates competition for spots. Spots that have been given away for too long.

In addition to squad depth, Magner is cheap insurance if Jones were to go down with injury.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
