We once had a few of these at Melbourne.

Our midfield now has capablility (getting the bloody thing) but not speed. Vince, Trenners, Cross, Tyson???, Jones-boys aren't quick.

Cross is a St.B's boy; and I think he went through with Swan. Obviously Cross is older than Swan. Thing with Cross is he hates kicking because he aint good at it. He dishes off like a ruckman.

Why can't Blease be that handball-receive that we will need big time in 2014.

Crazy if he goes, but I can't argue with PR.....so whatever the decision, the right one will be made I guess.

Going back to Sydney under Roos, he never had speed on the outside. Sydney found speed when Jetta was drafted.

Maybe we don't need speed at all, but with a slow capable midfield, I think we do.

Don't forget, Jamar in the ruck would make the West Coast midfield of the mid-2000's look like treacle; if the often correct Matthews' theory that the pace of a ruckman has a huge impact on the relative speed of your midfield.

A guy like Freeman (on admittedly limited vision that I've seen) could add this, as well as being able to win inside ball. Watts is the other guy that could be strongly suited to handball receives. Roos has hinted at this via his desire to play him on the wing.

Michael Evans and Dom Barry have a fair bit of pace. I think Taggert is quite quick too.

Blease, Evans and Toumpas look likely for this kind of role.

Handball receivers!!!!! FMD!!!!! Let's first of all sort out some blokes who can actually get a hold of the pill !!!

what good is that if you cant flounce down the wing with the wind in your hair ,waving your hands around to get a cheap stat?

The days of the pure receiver are gone.

Find me mids who can win thier own pill. clear it and run hard to create options, then tackle, man up, corrall and kick the odd sausage.

5 or 6 blokes in the midfield do that consistently we have something to do in september again.

There's a line or 2 there but will leave it..

I would nominate Vince (a terrific kick, both feet), Viney (raking left footer), N. Jones, Watts, Grimes, Hogan, Howe, Lennon (when we draft him at 9, which we will - what a gun!)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
