Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

AFL NATIONAL DRAFT - Pick 9

What

Recommended Posts

if it means we get Crouch i am fine with it.

I'm not so sure that Crouch will be on our radar now we have Tyson, Michie and Vince added to Viney. He is the best in and under clearance player in the draft but we might now be looking for a player with a more rounded game. I like his attack on the footy though.

1-Gws Boyd

2-Gws Kelly

3-saints Aish

4- Dogs Scharenberg

5- Suns Billings

6- Eagles Sheed

7-Lions Crouch

8- Roos Mcdonald (f/son)

9- Demons ...(in my preferred order) Freeman, Bontempelli, Lennon, Salem or Dunstan.

Hard to argue with that selection

There has been talk about Collingwood trading 11 and 31 for the Eagles pick 6 in the hope of recruiting Bontempelli

I actually dont think this will happen as the Eagles may not risk losing the opportunity to get Sheed at 6 as being an inside mid like Crouch he might be gone before pick 11

Unless they have a rough diamond somewhere around pick 31 i really doubt they will go for it

Haven't WC already agreed to trade to Pies there pick 6?

I am basing this on nothing but my gut tells me if freeman is there at 9 we take him (I think he will be gone) if he is gone we trams sheed. Best mates with hogan ready to go at afl level will be the o.wines of this draft and the main thing is he is best mates with hogan

heard 2 whispers to effect if hes there @9 well grab him.

Only whispers though lol

Just read morning news about Pies & Eagles deal... it seems Pies are keento get Bontempelli.

Freeman remains my preferred choice if available.

Yes, I have been saying all along we would take him (confirmed by Josh Mahoney) but he has to get to 9 first!

How things change in a few days, huh? :)

Not change for me. I haven't seen any of the U18 play so I'm just going off description. But with Viney and Jones I

I just don't see short-arse inside mid as #1priority. Freeman description more attractive.

Roos wants a bit of height; good skills; a footy brain and a huge tank

Freeman tick tick tick and tick

Someone mentioned Freeman is now 185cm, but I'm unsure what information they're using, as elsewhere he's listed at 181/182.

It would appear we'll end up with either Freeman or Lennon.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-09/phantom-draft

In this recent phantom guide from the AFL web site they have him as 184cm and 85kg.

And they have him at pick 9

"Freeman is the bolter of this year's draft having quietly crept up on a few of his contemporaries and he has done it through being dynamic. The strong-bodied midfielder finished the year well with the Sandringham Dragons, is a reliable kick, and loves to win the ball at stoppages and then burst from them. Showed his running prowess at the combine when he was ranked quickest for the repeat sprints (23.62 seconds), second for the 20-metre sprint (2.82 seconds) and 10th for the beep test (level 14.10)."

Don't know if the draft combine results have already been posted but he did well:

I'm having the same problem I have whenever i go into a bakery. So many tasty treats on the shelf, do I get something with a cream filling, go for a fruit tart or satisfy my chocolate addiction, decisions, decisions.

A week ago I would've been keen on a clearance machine like Crouch but with Tyson, Michie and to a lesser extent Vince coming on board, the maturing of Viney and talk Roos might put Trenners back in the coalface, we can now probably afford to look for a more rounded player. I still want someone that can win contested ball but they need to have other attributes as well.

Big bodies around the stoppages seems to be the way the game is headed and Tyson is our only extractor over 185cm. Sheed is 187 and Acres is 190, both can play inside and out and both are high production mids with good foot skills that can hit the scoreboard. Acres was playing injured during the champs and was a bit underwhelming while Sheed tore it up. Personally I prefer Acres, 3cm taller and 4 kg heavier and quicker to boot.

Some explosive pace from the contest would be nice and Freeman definitely fits the bill here, my concern with him is he can have very quiet games and isn't a consistent ball winner. Taylor and Hartung are both quick off the mark but we already have 7 guys on our list 180cm or under, that's nearly 20% of our list, not sure we need any more just now.

The other option is to go for someone who's more outside, Kolodjashnij, Bontempelli, Lennon and Salem would be the main contenders. Bontempelli is interesting at 194cm according to the AFL site, playing Watts in the midfield mightn't leave room for a Bontempelli. Lennon definitely has some weapons, is a good size and is versatile.

So I think I'd like Acres, no Freeman, or maybe Lennon, no Acres, definitely Acres.

Oh bugger it, serve that guy while I make up my mind.

Who's the last player we had like Freeman ? A 184cm explosive and strong bodied mid with the ideal combination of speed and reasonable endurance, placing 10th in the beep test. He ran 2.82 seconds for the 20 metre sprint and is brilliant at stoppages. A player like that can crack games open with a 10 minute burst.

He may not be a ball magnet, but can improve that side of his game. And it's not like he doesn't find the footy, as he averaged 20 disposals in the championships and they're time affected games. Dangerfield averaged 13 disposals from 21 games in his second year at Adelaide and by year 5 was averaging 26.

We need speed and freeman has it in spades. But he's also strong at contested footy. He's the one.

Collingwood moving to pick 6 scares me. I heard they are massive fan of Freeman and are likely to pounce.

When you say you've "heard" I assume you just read the same thing as me on BF ? By one or two posters ?

I'd hardly use that as your guide.

Exactly. He really would compliment our midfield perfectly. In fact, his "type" is one of the major missing ingredients.

WHat a dumb trade for the Eagles, why would they want to drop from pick 6 to 11?

Are they getting something in another deal?

They want pick 31 from collingwood to on trade to brisbane for Yeo

In what's a pretty even draft for the first 25 picks, dropping 5 places in the draft isn't too much of an issue. Especially as you'd imagine they'll still get there hometown boy Dom Sheed

Not sure it's that deep but the first 10 or so mids seem pretty even.

WHat a dumb trade for the Eagles, why would they want to drop from pick 6 to 11?

Are they getting something in another deal?

Because they still get their man at 11 and get Elliot Yeo for free.

Makes as much if not more sense than us going from 2 to 9 and getting Dom Tyson for pick 20.

Both of these trades (and the Collingwood and GWS ones) are derivatives from the NFL system of draft day trading and moving down the draft (New England Pats the king of this move) in order to get more quantity of good picks rather than 1 higher pick OR moving up in the draft to get the specific player you want.

Of course it's much easier in the NFL where you have draft day trading but obviously the clubs have their likely draft orders in their head and are doing the home work now and seeing who they will get. I think making the early call and saying Collingwood are moving to 6 just for Bontempelli is wrong, I think they are moving to 6 to secure one of the guys who they think are a top 3 or 4 talent in this draft. Considering Boyd will probably be number 1 on their list as well as in the draft they just need some difference in the next 4 picks and they'll get who they think is a top 3 or 4 talent which is scary. We are obviously confident of getting one of our top 4 or 5 talents slipping to 9 as well.

HB might be hogans best position considering he played as a junior back and forward. After his year at Casey I think he should continue as a big forward. But just because it didn't work for Watts, doesn't mean won't work for someone else. Watts has struggled in general.

Certainly worked for David Neitz, particularly in his early days, and as Wayne Carey famously said Neitz was the best CHB he played on. High praise indeed. Neitz also said he learnt just so much about playing FF and CHF playing down back on the likes of Carey - he has said a number of times it made him a lot better forward and player, so it may not do Hogan any harm at all. Remember also we used to see Neitz switch from CHF to CHB and vice versa several times a game depending on the state of play, as we did with Earl Spalding, sometimes they would swap spots. Interestingly, as I understand it, James Frawley played a lot of his junior footy at CHF.

Maybe there is an opportunity there!

I actually hope we draft Kolodjashnij. He is exactly what we need right now. How terrible has our disposal off half back been in recent years ? Someone who can use the ball well and has naturally played in that position will be a big plus for mine.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
