Way too early to tell when you factor in ...

1) He was in his 1st year

2) He was playing in a team which was almost devoid of any proper teamwork

3) He may or may not have been used properly when he did play

4) We're not sure whether he should have played more games in the seniors or at Casey

From what I saw he was one of few players who was trying to do something practical with the ball - and he has quite neat disposal.

Lets judge him after a full injury free season under Roos. And even then he won't be at full maturity until he's around 21-23 years old. However, if he's going to be a very good player for us, he'll need to show us a bit next season.

All things considered I believe he's progressing well.

I'll take your word for it on Dom. I don't watch as much footy as many here so I rely on other posters opinions re the new players. Vince could be a very handy acquisition if he can reach his best form with us.

Toumpas has a got a skill that is noticeable though - he seems to create a bit of time for himself when he's got the ball. And in our team last year that would have been a difficult thing to do. Just some glimpses but there's something there.

But we've all been guilty of making rash predictions on players so my opinion on Jimmy is .... I'll wait and see! (is that an opinion?)

Obviously we'd all like to see him do well.

What he says here was quite visible during the year, I think. Wasn't near it at the start of the year, went back to Casey and used his time in the seniors to learn where he needed to get to. Improved during the year and now has a sense of where he's at and what he can achieve.

Will be a star without doubt,

Even in he games he struggled you could see him running tirelessly to make space and create an option. He was our best player at Kardinia Park in atrocious conditions and his inside game is underrated.

He is a very hard worker and demands excellence from himself.

He should have a very nice 2nd season and I project him to be the set up man off half back in 2014 as part of his midfield apprenticeship.

It is bandied about alot these days isn't it.

I'd say the person with the most star-quality on our list is Dom Tyson. Following him as a junior, the comparisons to Pendlebury are absolutely there. Exceptional in tight, great hands and a very attractive long left foot. Does he have the burst away speed.. due to injuries so far I'm not sure though.

NB: This isn't saying he will be a star by any means, but I feel like if he works as hard as Scott does to be the best player he can be, he could end up one.

Stynes, Flower, Farmer, Jakovich were all stars... and that is just a quick grab without going through any lists. Maybe I have the benefit of being able to compare these people to the stars that went before them in the 50's and 60's.

For me a true "star" is one that virtually any AFL supporter of any club would unanimously agree.

If there's an argument then they're not a star. Players like Carey, Matthews, Ablett Snr, Voss, Lockett, Dunstall, Brereton, Williams, Jezza, Blight, Madden, Skilton, Whitten, Stewart, Hird, now Ablett Jnr, etc. For me they're genuine stars of the game. That's what I consider a "star". Clearly others have different interpretations. Flower is the only star I've seen at Melbourne as I was born after our last premiership.

Stynes was almost unanimously considered one of the most effective ruckmen of his era (not sure what you mean by hurt factor), Farmer was not consistent, but what he managed to do was freakish, and who ever said longevity and being a star must go hand in hand? Most stars are flawed.

It's a matter of opinion. There wouldn't be too many non Melbourne supporters who would agree with you on those three players.

You might be able to make a case for Jimmy. He didn't take a lot of contested Mark's and played as a linkman. He was a high possession winner, consistent and durable. His possessions were usually gained outside and his disposals consisted of many handpasses and dinky little passes. A very effective player as you say ans a great of the club but not a star.

We are so starved of stars in our recent history that some tend to elevate some of our better players beyond the level of what they were. It's understandable.

As for longevity it's most definitely a factor.

Stynes was an excellent player and one of the first follower/ruckman. He helped evolutionise the game in many ways. He's certainly one of the best stories, as Chris and Garry like to say, but a rung short for mine.

I think longevity is very important. A player can have an A-grade year as a footballer, but it doesn't make them an A-grader in my eyes. Consistent A-grade years is required to elevate yourself to such vaulted company. It's the same with "stars". Super human deeds are needed over a considerable length of time to showcase the difference between a bloody good player and a great. Teams try and stop stars over time due to their importance, but true stars can't be stopped for long. The longevity is crucial in the make up of determining true stars. The ability to do the inspirational time and time again. Year after year no matter the focus on stopping them. Sustained excellence being the difference between them and others.

Meanwhile back onto the thread, Toumpas would want to work extremely hard on his deficiencies, have a solid pre- season and play very consistent footy to change my mind about where I reckon he is at. Not a walk up start in my team by any stretch of the imagination!
