If Ling wants to be an assistant then head coach then this is his chance to learn from the best and have a guaranteed coaching gig when Roos finishes. Seems beyond dumb if Ling stays in the media for a year then dips his toes in the water. If Ling doesn't take it he can enjoy moving interstate and then waiting for someone to get fired and then join the merry go round of applying for the job. I'm sure he has thought of this and PJ has/will tell him so.

.... the danger is with Lingy, if he stays in the media he could end up along a similar pathway to Gazza Lyon. Never committed to coaching, as he seemed prefer the TV lifestyle. Gazza missed out on a potential coaching career, by not committing & grabbing opportunities to learn early...

Lingy is ready if he can put money making on hold for a few years, & have a crack at assisting. he either wants to, or he wants other stuff more.

Nobody has discussed Todd Viney being groomed/mentored by Roos. What is his status in the Roos regime? it would be nice to have at least one former Melbourne champion embedded in the coaching structure!

You'd think if Todd wanted to be a senior coach he wouldn't come back to Melbourne as a development coach / recruiter. Doubt he's interested in being a head coach.

If he is then by all means he should be interviewed. Just do not like the idea of a father coaching his son. Too hard.

I was disappointed at the time, he didn't throw his hat into the ring as an assistant. And I didn't want him as coach, just to walk straight into a HeadCoach role with us, without doing an apprenticeship.

.... don't know if he wasn't smart enough? but he's carved out a nice career anyway, so thats good.

I think in today's Footy, the Senior Assistant should be permanently there, who is always the RightHand man, out of the media glare. A savvy type who has a great relationship with the HeadCoach, but wants to be the permanent 2ic.

I think the next head coach should come from one of the assistants, who'll spend the next few years learning from Roosy & the Senior Assistant.

The senior assistant is now a long term permanent role in footy. Malthouse has ahd his own at every club. Robert Wiley from WCE has followed Mick to every one of his coaching gigs.

also today given the importance of assistants, they are now a viable long term career path and some will never step to be a senior coach and that will suit some more than others.

Agree, Ling would be good. As you say if Ling has signed already there would be no need for an interview tomorrow, he would be turning up to work with Roos on Monday morning.

... So its not the senior assistant we're looking for, If Tudor is available to us. but its the assistant coaches we need to grab, to see which one will be able to step up, to be a possible Head Honcho.

My preference is for Simpson or possibly Tudor.

I could certainly live with Ling, but he is coming from ground zero to potentially take over in 3 years.. he will have to be a fast learner.

IMO Simpson has done a good apprenticeship so far and has the ambition to be a senior coach, but IAH I will just trust Roos to know who and what he wants, never though 13 years ago Longmire would make a good coach but look how that turned out.

Roos legacy I believe will go beyond the coaching he does in the next 2/3 years

I already mentioned him a couple of times... not sure why he is overlooked while Ling gets all of the attention. Then again, I also suggested Bob Murphy, so that probably eliminates me from any claim to sensibility ;-)

I think his crazy Channel Seven intro has driven a lot of people off. I suspect he'd be much better behind closed doors than in front of a television camera.

It's perfectly feasible that Ling (like Roos before him, if some sources are to be believed) does not want a circus around him of being asked repeatedly about the MFC role for the remainder of the finals?

As we'll most probably have to wait until the conclusion of the finals to name anyone else, I don't see why we couldn't let him see out this year's media commitments.

And if he's yet to decide, I'm sure PJ & Roos could sway his thinking.

Seriously, an opportunity like this would not come up often.

Hopefully we'd also get Simpson or Burns.
