I sent an email to the sports editor of The Guardian online Australia version yesterday, Tom Lutz. I was suggesting he may not be giving Australian Football it's due as the biggest sport in the country by its lack of presence in sports stories.

He replied quickly and with detail, even suggesting that since arriving from the UK, he had chosen to support the Dees! For those who think that history counts for nothing, he chose the MFC because it is the oldest club firstly, and secondly because we have been success free for so long.

Good on him I reckon.

We'll see how long The Guardian lasts.

And, yay, another pity supporter. Let me guess: he resides in Fitzroy?

Such overwhelming positivity...... reads like resigned self pity. It was the history that attracted him first. Good response though.

Most people I meet from the UK tell me "I follow the Bombers because I like aeroplanes"

I had the same attitude about the Mets when I went to the baseball in New York (cos they weren't very good). Surprisingly they won so I guess I can't follow them.

Of course you still can, maybe it was you that unchained them?

He hasn't opened his mouth yet, other than to say he supports Melbourne, and you are at his throat with this "guessing"! Can I say no, I don't let you guess?

If he's a pity supporter, what are you? A cannibal supporter? A contempt supporter? I've missed something here. You apparently would be happier not to have someone choose to support Melbourne. Like the closed club, is that your point?

I'm a Pom and I've always barracked for the Dees. I knew I was gonna live in Melbourne, but not sure which suburb, so that's why. This current plight doesn't worry me as back home, I follow the mighty Plymouth Argyle, who have never played in the top tier of English football. In fact the greatest claim to fame are a couple of Cup semi-finals. Gotta stick with your team, though.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
