the sellar inclusion for this week is why the bookies have got gold coast as favourites now.

a big body, can imagine why recruiters liked him hence going in the draft early. but he is only a big body, cannot do the fundamental things that are required of a big man. id say nev jetta would outmark sellar.

Many have short memories of his second half year performances in the backline last year and the multiple goals that he kicked in the NAB Cup this year in the forward line. Personally I think that Sellar has some upside and he won't be our worst player on Sunday. Howe was arguably our worst player last weekend but nobody is calling for his head or suggesting he be dropped on the basis of form!

that nab cup perfomrance was against port adelaide kids and his goals were soft. howe has showed he has got something. sellar doesnt offer anything except a big body and thats not enough

if he comes in as a forward why didn't he or Pedersen play past week. I can't see the reasoning of going from zero key forwards to two all in one week. But mark Neeld and reasoning aren't really friends.

Get Clark (back up ruck) and Hogan in and that forward line works. But currently that forward line is much too tall considering the 3 talls aren't really threats.

Last time Clark rucked it put him out for 8 weeks, we went small last week and it back fired, to me we picked a team last week to try and counter carltons run it worked in patches but we had no one to kick to deep forward

The NAB cup performance was against Jackson Trengove who is their best big defender. Sellar is still young, the coaches obviously think he can play a role this week. He might be in for a specific match up or maybe one of the other big defenders is under an injury cloud.

I heard it was a fracture in his arm but he's been playing with it for weeks.

Assuming Lynden Dunn plays on him, it would be interesting to see him test something like that out.

Dunn will certainly test the stitching on Abletts jumper....oh when he can find and catch up with him.

ill be shocked and shattered if sellar is on our list next year. which is why it he shouldnt play anymore, dont waste the opportunity to give guys like fitzpatrick a game

Brian Royal said yesterday that Sellar will be playing as a defender, so he is not competing for a spot with Fitzpatrick.

brian royal is another problem. i wish i could be positive abt sellar but just cant see any upside to playing him..

I can understand that, hasn't exactly done much for us! But, the coaches obviously have a role in mind for him this week, so hopefully he can play it well.

People give Sellar a lot of crap, but I actually think he's a fairly competent defender. His marking sucks for a big man, but otherwise he's pretty decent depth in that area.

That was before Charlie Dixon was withdrawn

Let's hope Lynden gets the job and does well instead?

Yes, he did say it before Dixon was withdrawn, but has it changed since then? Dixon was withdrawn before we named our final team, so i would imagine they would still have a role in mind otherwise they wouldn't have selected him.

Davey was very good in the first half against Port last week.

Rodan had a good second half.

Between them they had a very good game....

I can see the thinking here though. Jimmy T is young and has to earn his spot. Davey won't be there next year and I doubt Rodan will either, so it's simply about getting experience on the ground. I'd take Rodan this week over Davey.

i guess football department staff heads will roll by next week, its as if they want to get fired..

There are clear and I would have thought, obvious reasons why the players who have been picked have been included - if you don't want to see them or acknowledge them, that's not an issue with the FD.

Sellar was more than solid in the back half of last year as a KPD, was more than solid last week at Casey down back after a week of through illness, and deserves his chance. We were stretched by Brisbane and their talls, and having a third big defender makes sense, especially when the opposition starts resting their rucks in the forward line.

This also reflects on the absence of Watts down back, as well as the fact that Dunn, another of our tallish defenders, seems to be moving into more of a run-with defensive role.

Well you'd assume he's playing forward then. Not a huge advocate of that move, but as was mentioned earlier, they could be getting the group prepared for the forward structure when we're fully fit.

Then again, I could be wrong and he could play back. I just don't see how the matchups would really work then. Garland would play on a small I assume, which is not his best role. Oh well, we'll see how it pans out

He's also a far better kick and general decision maker than McDonald, Grimes and Nicholson.

Sellar can kick, Davis can't.

Sellar is genuine key position size, Davis isn't quite.

Sellar can back up ruck, Davis can't.

Seriously I don't think we've given Sellar enough of a chance as a defender to prove himself. Give him a run there, the worst thing that happens is he struggles a bit then we can move him forward and sub out a ruck man at 3/4 time to bring Kent on.

Pretty much right there 'master', he brings greater flexibility.

Sellar was pretty ordinary last year until he started to hold his marks, after that he wasn't to bad; he needs confidence and if he can hold a few early tomorrow he might turn out to be a fair player for us.

He plays much better down back than in the forward line.

The thing that makes me really like our chances is that we have three tall forwards potentially and howe and sylvia plenty of marking options and their defence is light on with no warnock or Dixon in the side,

I think we'll win by 40-60 points

I love the never ending optimism :) I hope it's well placed. Dixon and Warnock are certainly outs that should improve our chances a great deal, Dixon especially.

Ugh ugh

His flexibility comes from his inability to successfully hold down any position as his own.

It's been telling that the FD can't fit Sellar with Jamar, Clark and Dawes sidelined.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
