Casey Scorpions v Williamstown

KC from Casey

Recommended Posts

Look it was a simple decision at the time - we all knew we needed an outside runner and a good kick so we picked Toumpas.

Toumpas is not just an outside runner.

He could easily also be classified as inside. He will go and get his own ball just as quickly as he will break, receive the ball and use it cleanly.

Look I never said he could not win his own ball but I don't think he will ever be classified as an inside mid (not like a Jones or Magner or Viney etc.)

The main point was that we selected him because of his potential to be a dangerous outside player - every AFL player needs to have the ability to find their own ball (especially a pick 4........unless your name is Morton)

Thanks to Maldon38 for some constructive stuff on the game! A lot of you guys should take a leaf from his book and do the same.

Demonland.

Abusing eachother seems to be the only way this place takes a break from abusing teenagers.

Genuine behavioural issues in play, here. Which would be fine if you'd just move it to your own thread because the rest of us just want to talk footy.

Thanks for the Casey reports, it is a nice bit of background to know that we seem to have at least a bit of current depth and potential coming through.

Get the impression that plenty of the Casey-listed players have good solid football attitudes, too.

As for the Toumpas talk.. hmm...

Toumpas' long term role is likely to require that he maintain super-high fitness levels, providing the handball-receives and entries into 50, the continuous movement around and through packs that loses a tagger, and the body strength to go when it is his turn, particularly for the run-down tackle.

Right now, he's had one preseason. This is a distinct factor for the role he is set to play. If things go well, he'll become a fully-rounded midfielder, and as such, priceless.

As for how much we can pin on his first season or two just ask...

Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo, Scott Pendlebury, Brent Stanton, Brett Deledio, Travis Boak, Corey Enright, Bryce Gibbs... you get the picture.

Can we pin this post and have it automatically added right after every "gee ollie wines is good and I don't know why we selected Jimmy T..."

Please

Seriously, please.

Watts would want to have a good game tomorrow, cos as it stands now both Dunn and Strauss deserve to be in the team ahead of him

Dunn and Strauss presumably dont have the goat photos too.

Apologies for lack of transmission but I had iPhone issues tonight.

Still a great win for the Casey Scorpions with some great signs for the remainder of the year for Melbourne with quite a few players returning to the park.

More reports tomorrow.

Bloody Apple products give it the arse KC.

Move to Android the product of the future!

Great post and it would be fantastic if Toumpas developed into the kind of player that any of those guys are, except for Gibbs who is nowhere near as good as he should be. If Toumpas ended up like Gibbs it would be a terrible waste.

All this doubting Toumpas talk is absolutely pathetic and typical of Melbourne supporters.

Did Dawes play? The only info I've seen is about Toumpas (which is ridiculous the amount of talk there is).

WINDY NIGHT by K C from Casey

The game between two of the VFL's leading teams Casey and Williamstown was strongly influenced by Mother Nature and the strong winds she conjured up that swept across Casey Fields on Saturday night.

The angry conditions that resulted provided a suitable backdrop to the Scorpions' theme for the night which was to support the White Ribbon Campaign against violence on women and the club deserves accolades for its involvement in such a worthy cause.

It was fitting therefore that the home team would ultimately triumph against the elements and the opposition through hard work, particularly when defending against the strong breeze. The team managed only three goals against the wind but every one of them was significant in terms of the final outcome in a game where subtle changes of direction were significant.

The Scorpions came out of the blocks with all guns blazing. With Jake Spencer winning in the ruck and feeding a hungry midfield, the team racked up the goals and had four on the board by mid term through the agency of Chris Dawes, Jesse Hogan, a long bomb from Lynden Dunn and one from Rory Taggert. The visitors then settled defensively and managed to contain the damage to a couple of points for the rest of the term. Casey's cause was not helped when Hogan incurred a knock and left the field with a corkie. His night had ended and, from the team's point of view, the feeling was that a 26 point lead was hardly enough in these conditions.

Sure enough, Williamstown wasted no time when its chances came to reel in the Casey advantage by halfway through the second quarter. The Scorpions were facing the possibility of a major half time deficit when, against the run of play, their other young West Australian Dean Kent, produced the highlight of the night. He gathered the ball in defence and ran like the wind that was blowing into his face. Several bounces later, he kicked truly to regain the lead and lift the spirits of his team. The Seagulls struck back but late in the quarter, Jack Fitzpatrick scored a handy goal to make it a two point deficit at the half.

As they have done for most of this season the Scorpions turned on their best football in the third quarter. Fitzpatrick was again to the fore booting three further goals to add to the one he scored just before half time to ensure that his team would be defending a lead in excess of five goals in the final term.

Casey closed the game down and with the visitors managing only a few points in the first half of the term, Danny Nicholls and Jake Best combined well for a goal to put the game beyond doubt. Willi managed a couple of late goals but could do nothing to prevent their hosts from moving to the top of the ladder with a well deserved 23 point victory.

Nathan Page was the best of the Casey listed players. Luke Tynan was another who worked hard all night. Lynden Dunn was the star off half back.

Casey Scorpions 4.4.28 6.5.41 13.8.86 14.8.92

Williamstown Cordy 3 Nastasi 2 Addison Grant Howard McCallum

The development league team came up against ladder leader Williamstown who were far too strong and ran away with the game in a frenetic final quarter to win by 69 points. Josh Tynan was Casey's best.

Me too so thanks from me also KC. Seems strange to me that Josh Tynan rakes up another BOG in the seconds. Surely we should be testing and developing him at a higher level. Don't understand this.

Love reading your reports & updates KC, thanks again.

Let's face it Toumpas is a dud :)

Thank you Roost It for both your eloquence and capacity to look into the immediate future with absolute certainty. Have you thought of donating The Roost It Encouragement Award to the club for first year players? Look into it.

Let's face it Roost It is a dud!

If he wasn't a dud he wouldn't set himself up for such a fall. I suppose he will have to morph into some other online identity when Toumpas surpasses Roost's pathetic appraisal. That day will certainly come by 2014, but I'm feeling empowered by Roost's lack of nouse... It is far more likely that Toumpas will prove his worth in 2013. Thanks for the upcoming opportunity to shove your head back into your shell Roosty old boy!

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
