Bold denotes a young player whom little can be expected of and/or a total spud. Italics denotes 'lucky not to be bold'

B: Tom Gillies, James Frawley, Dean Terlich

HB: Jack Watts, Tom McDonald, Colin Garland

C: Jack Grimes, Jack Viney, Matt Jones

HF: Sam Blease, James Sellar, Jeremy Howe

F: Colin Sylvia, Mitch Clark, Shannon Byrnes

FOLL: Mark Jamar, Jordie McKenzie, Nathan Jones

I/C: Jimmy Toumpas, Jack Trengove, Daniel Nicholson, Aaron Davey

No wonder we are bad, that's 16 of 22 who aren't pulling their weight

This is a similar, but even less-charitable, result to my own 14/22 assessment based on form, fitness and ability.

Such clear and obvious doubt does not bode well.

Ben Hur bet me his house that Jetta would play in round 1. Now they've both gone missing. Conspiracy?

Does anyone know what's happened to Jetta? Or BH?

It's a sad indictment on Round 1 that the question of what has happened to Ben Hur is marginally more interesting to me than what's happened to the players.

I dropped Jack Watts from my dreamteam mostly due to a large price drop that looks imminent

So look for 30 possessions and 3 lazy goals in the second half from him now..............

I spoke to Jetta outside the MCG last Sunday and mentioned that I was disappointed he was not in the side. He seemed a bit flat and replied that he was very disappointed himself...I can't imagine missing out again after seeing last week's effort is going to make his disposition any better.

I too can't understand how he has missed this week. His pre-season seemed to be very good and let's face it, Nicho's game last week was, at best, forgettable

Absolutely agree here - Rodan has been dropped for lack of accountability on their counter attack

Cant disagree with the outs. Would have added Gillies as he was poor and that back half lacks run again. Would have also dropped Nicho but is likely needed for their smalls. I would expect Rodan is due to defensive acts rather than anything he did with the ball.

BH is on a self-imposed holiday. I expect he'll be back eventually.

A few random stats for the teams this week:

The average games played per player this week for Essendon is around 80, minus Fletcher it is 68. Essendon have 5 players that have played at least 100 games.

Melbourne's average is 60 games with 6 players playing at least 100 games...

I had thought maybe Benson was the likely candidate :-)

Indeed he probably dons a different hat before he nestles at the keyboard to assess the relative IQs.

Ok, so with Davey, Trengove, McDonald, and Terlich coming in and with some comments from Neeld and Grimes about resisting the urge to throw people around I can see the team setting up like this:

B: Gillies, Frawley, Garland, McDonald, Terlich, and Watts.

C: N Jones, M Jones, Grimes, Viney, Trengove, McKenzie, Sylvia, Toumpas, Blease, and Nicholson (sub).

F: Clark, Sellar, Byrnes, Howe, and Davey.

R: Jamar

With Blease and Trengove in that midfield looks better. Look being the operative word. I got Nicholson out of the backline but he may be apart of the starting 6, at which point I will get sad but also Garland may move forward.

Well done to Matt Jones who was good in his first game, and to Byrnes who worked hard and tackled well.

Good luck to Terlich in his first game.

Let's hope the midfield turns up and the boys play with some confidence.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
