A compromise

For all those supporters who, like me, initially couldn't fathom the idea of turning up to watch those guys ply their trade next week, I have a compromise.

I'm going to the game this Saturday, and every other game I can this year, but I vow to walk out the first time that either of the following happens:-

1. One of our players squibs it

2. We go through a period of more than 3 minutes where our intensity in terms of chasing/tackling/spreading/contesting are not up to AFL standard.

Am I expecting too much? I don't think these are big asks of an AFL club. This leaves my support in the hands of the players and FD. I don't expect a quick fix to the atrocities that are our structures, ball movement or defensive body positioning, but I do expect that these guys can afford us the respect of delivering the simplest aspects of what truly is a simple game at heart.

I believe this compromise will assist in keeping my marriage together, ensure my 'about to arrive' child doesn't hate me and also ensure I remain a happier and saner individual.

Haha yeah I expect I probably will be, but we can always hope. The alternative is to not go at all and I care too much about the future of the club to go down that path.

I'm going with mates, I'm probably going to drink myself stupid and hurl abuse at every single one of them if they squib it. And they bloody well deserve it. I turn up to support if they deserve support. I'll support a JV, a Clark, a Jones. I won't support Sylvia doing SFA all night.

I'll be there. Those non-negotiables have been part of my mind-set at games for a number of years now.

Suffice to say, I've missed many many (unimaginably shitful) quarters.

I can, will, and do when the lazy, vindictive, playing group decide they couldn't give a stuff - ie the majority of games over the last 6 years...

..all while the average AFL salary has been 200-265k..

After racing to get ready, driving close to an hour to get to the game including madly trying to find a park, eventually settling on one opposite the shrine and then running to the ground, I was literally about to take my seat when Nicholson violated this rule. You may argue that walking straight back to the car at that point would have been time better spent than staying for the game I suppose.

What about

A. If we kick the ball from a behind out to Jamar just outside the 50 near the boundary line more than twice in a Qtr.

or

B. We continually ignore wide open players in the corridor, only to bomb it down the line on top of one of our forwards head who has worked his way up the wing 100 mtrs from goal.

Either of these happen, I'm outta there.(in the first 10 mins probably)

Ok, I have a new one for this week. What about a 'Demonland' section at the ground vs WCE next weekend. There is so much intelligent and passionate debate on this site that it makes me think if a substantial chunk of this group sat together at the game we could channel the energy to making some noise for the players, show that we the supporters are united in that we love our club and will be there through it all, and perhaps look after each others mental state of mind at the same time. Probably a dumb idea (and i know we already have the cheer squad) but I'm just trying to think of small ways that we could possibly help.

Having said that, my first born arrived on Thu so imissed Sat night...but will be doing my best to get there this weekend...
