Those words which caused so much anger over summer - 'pathetic' and 'disgusting' - look prescient now.

Hard to imagine a more disappointing start to the year.

I won't recap all the problems that others have already identified, but I cannot for the life of me understand why we don't use Jeremy Howe more as the go-to man when moving the ball out of defence / transitioning into attack. He's the best mark in the team yet every kick-in seemed to go the other side of the ground to where Howe was.

I was torn between booing the team and applauding Jack Viney

Neither did the supporters.

Neither did anyone - the betting odds are always a very good indicator of public opinion and we started just very slight favourites. I certainly didn't hear or read anyone at all claiming we would go down by 14 goals

What was McKenzie doing there if he wasn't tagging Boak?

Boak and Hartlett had no one within 5 meters of them.

Our back line was deplorable.

It did look like we were zoning.

We are not good enough to zone, we are too slow.

Complete lack of pressure on the ball carrier and one on one pressure.

Port couldn't believe their luck, it was a picnic for them.

Blease our fastest player as the sub?? WTF

JEtta and Terlich our best pre season performers not chosen?? WTF

We are a rabble already and it's only round one.

MFC = NFI

it pained me to write that but I honestly cant see much of anything there now.

This presser just makes me angrier. I'm not buying this spin any longer. Passing off the first 15 minutes of the third quarter as competitive because there was no score. Spare me.

(in relation to Port's aggressiveness) "We didn't see that coming.."

Really? You should've. It's called AFL football.

"When the opposition have the ball, what does that look like?"

It's a red, oval shaped thing. You're meant to chase whoever has it to try and get it back.

The saddest thing is watching Collingwood and North Melbourne running around and so many players putting in that extra effort to get to the ball to take marks. I didn't see much of that today from Melbourne.

I'm getting the impression that the most important aspect of planning the game today by the coaching panel was the rotations and I'm not sure they even got that right.

Well they didn't. McKenzie created an interchange infrigement resulting in a 50m penalty (which reversed the free Jamar won on the wing) 6 months of training to watch that shiite is plain embarrassing.

I am sure Toumpas will be a good player but I must say that seeing Wines play today has me concerned.

Wines is a ready made in and under player and Toumpas looks like he will take two years to develop.

I am so sick of having to always wait on players to "build up" etc. I want to see results and I think that we may have made another draft mistake.

Why has every other club improved over the summer and we look the same? Enough is enough!

I refuse to watch the pressers and interviews. Don't get any solace whatsoever from words anymore.

I did have a listen and the words coming out of Watt's mouth did not reflect the effort levels he put in. He speaks of Mitchell and Selwood and guys who drag their team over the line and says that we just didnt have them. Maybe that can be you Jack.

Im glad they are all [censored] off and hopefully it will result in some anger out there next time.

I have one simple question for those responsible at the MFC, i.e Coach and underlings:

What the F have you been doing since the debacle of 2012 ??

The only thing thats improved is the Red of our jumper, but Im not sure why as hardly anyone seemed to bleed today, despite the bloody carnage !!

Possibly the best thing the club to utter is NOTHING...as anything will be coloured brown !!

Im just at a loss to explain how we can keep getting worse.

Some atrocious moments of bruise free football today.

  • Pedo ducking his head under no pressure.
  • Sellar not wanting body contact in the defensive goal square and costing a goal
  • Nicholson dropping an easy chest mark then double fisting away the next one.
  • Gillies double fisting another uncontested mark.
  • Melbourne double fisting my dreams.

For God's sake, you can be crap but please don't be SOFT! This is heartbreaking.

No we don't look the same we look worse.

Agree with that; we look a lot worse this year than last because we've loaded up the side with older players who have absolutely no upside.

HAHA - some funny comments.

Does anyone have a photo or footage of Cam's head duck?

Will Sellar ever take a mark in a game?

Will Dean Kent be allowed to play and show the world that he is miles ahead of half our list?

That was the biggest double fisting I've seen since the Barassi days.

The players deserve a double fisting from the fans.

They got off lighlty with booing.

I'll be going with a west coast mate as well. He's rolled his eyes at me re the MFC for the last .. dozen years. Even through the meth coke saga, he rolled his eyes at me. There i was thinking, 'Is this guy for real?!' Oh for those days.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
