Did anyone try to use the new AFL Live app to watch the match tonight?

I have it on an iPad with a Telstra SIM. The quality went from OK to poor (fuzzy, can't read player's numbers o the score) to a blank screen wit audio, then no audio, for minutes at a time. For this they want $15/month? Or was it just me?

Also their web site and the article in the Age (may a curse be on it until they sack CW) said it would also work on WiFi but it doesn't.

Any ideas?

Yes watched using the afl live app on my iPad. I watched using wifi from my home Internet connection and was impressed with the quality.

I did notice the occasional time where the video wound back 5 seconds and played the same footage again, and after the dees game had a black screen once. Just turned off/on wifi on the iPad and didn't,t have further issues.

Now if only I could work out how to play my iPad through th tv

Hmm, is your home internet ISP Telstra or some other company? If I tried to use WiFI I got a message saying 'you are connected to WIFi, disconnect' and then some guff about not to worry, Telstra is not charging for traffic. I asked Telstra about thsi and was promised an answer but haven't had one.

yes, but both the ipad and Apple TV have to be on the same network. So that did me no good because I can't get the app to work on my WiFI - it only works through my SIm card in the ipad. If I try to use WiFI I get the message "You are connected via Wifi.. To access Live Video please turn off WiFi in Settings" appears as soon as a try to view video.

im pretty sure it's because you have the Telstra sim. They don't charge data use if you have Telstra. You could try shutting down cellular activity and just use wifi

I think you are correct. However, if I remove my SIM card the app still knows I had one.

But I have just discovered that if I remove the SIM and re-download the app it doesn't. (Looks like the app peeks at the installed hardware when it is first started.) Hooray, it looks like it will work over WiFI.

But while I can see how I can pay my $15/month or $90/season, it is not clear how I first see the free NAB games. I don't want to pay $15 for the coming month if it is otherwise free to see non-Demons games. And I don't want to sign up for a season at $90 till I know the quality will be better than I got using my SIM for the NAB cup to date - it was totally unacceptable.

At the moment, with no live stream actually running, when I hit 'watch nab cup live" the app puts up the screen where I can sign up for monthly or season pass. There does not seem to be a 'free NAB trial' button. Maybe if a live NAB stream is being broadcast it will just go straight to play it - though that seems an over-optimistic hope since I'd imagine Telstra is always keen to display the sign-up for $ page.

If anyone has set it up to use WiFi, please let me know how you sign up or whatever for the NAB cup.

thanks - and isn't it nice that the footy is started.

Nab cup is not free.

thanks - that explains my problems. Will give it a go when the season starts - not paying Telstra $15 to not see Demons playing in the NAB.

I simply use the 3G network to watch given its free and I'm with Telstra. It works fine with no issues.

Worth it if you don't have foxtel and are on the road a lot.

I was confused because I have an old Telstra SIM card in my iPad and when I found I could see the NAB games for free I assumed that the charging would only start for the real season. I think it is free overseas. I had no idea why having a SIM should entitle me to what I thought was a new service, hence the confusion. I feel better now.....

thanks to all

I am using an Internode connection - since I work for them.

You were confused, the international version gave a free option to watch the NAB cup, but they have Australian IP addresses blocked. It might be possible to sign up for one of those american Ip address proxies to bypass this but I honestly can't be bothered.

Bit annoyed that the other Nab cup games won't be shown - if thats true.

I have a connector that goes from iPad to my pc laptop and a lead that connects my laptop into the LCD tv. It's what might be described as the scenic route to get it on tv.

AppleTV will be the best $100 you've spent

EDIT: Just noticed comments about wifi/3G...

Just with regards to appleTV, its awesome for pushing videos/music/youtube from your phone or ipad onto your tv and still watching them in good quality. I've built myself a PC running XBMC software which is similar, but also have an add-on someone has written which links to ALL AFL videos (pressers/highlgiths/full games). Very handy for anyone who doesn't have foxtel

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
