WYL take your MFC glasses off. The rule is in place because the guys were ignoring their schooling in favour of their footy. Not everyone is going to be a star - what if a guy did that, did his knee 3 times and that was it for him?

I like the rule. Means that they still get through high school, many of them end up going to uni now part-time while at their clubs in order to establish a life after footy. We need to support these guys in all aspects of life, not just when they rock up to the 'G in red and blue.

This.

Also, I like the rule because without it we would not have got Jesse at all

The rules weren't written specifically for Jessie.

Never said it was...But if Jessie has completed year 12 & is 18 BEFORE Round 1 he should be eligable to play.

If he isn't the rule is very poor. But there are many poor rules within the AFL...we all know that.

Jesse has finished school purely because he happened to attend school in WA, and they finish up a year early over there. If he was in school in Vic, SA, Tas or NSW he'd be in year 12 this year. Unless you're proposing different rules for different kids depending on which state they live in, then the rule is fine and works as it is.

They do year 12, it's one of the earlier years they miss (something like the year we call Prep). Net result is finishing a year sooner. Queensland is the same.

Ok..learnt that one today....still doesn't explain why an 18 year old is denied senior experience when he is actually an adult at the commencement of Round 1.

Maybe he and CC can nut out the AFL's rules this year at Casey...both will be a little bemused i am sure.

They have to draw the line somewhere, it turns out that Hogan is just too young.

It's really not that complicated and I agree with rfpc, the drafting age should be increased if anything.

Remember, if not for the Mini Draft he wouldn't have even been drafted this year and no one would be having this conversation.

I'd love hogan to play this year. We should ask the AFL for permission. They are known to have a fair league in place though. You know with the Judd visy deal, interstate teams with extra cap space, a unfair fixture, terrible stadium deals, only one tanking investigation and no clash strip for some teams. I can't see them accommodating for one club and not all.

I understand all that CB, but the fact is the kid is ready for a serious taste....if they AFL was smart the should allow an every case on it's merits.

If he was still 17 i would have no problem with it, but he is now legally an adult...Round 1 is still a month away.

I think thats at the spirit of it and other clubs/AFL may 'smell a rat' at our proposed revised tactics. At draft time we knew he was a proposed 2014 player did we not, notwithstanding that recent events may have shown him to be more advanced. The other side to it is that its likely we have to burn a kid currently on the list. Sorry much as part of me would like to have him on the list, dont think it's the right way to go about it.

Yes it does, it explains it clearly. Just because you can't join the dots doesn't mean that it isn't an explanation. Honestly, your inability to take Logic Point A and Logic Point B, and mix them together to get a reasoned argument still amazes me after 8 years.

It's not that big a deal to other clubs. We aren't asking to add to our list that dominated the league last year. If the Bulldogs had a hogan type player I would be all for him playing. It Boosts memberships, ticket sales and interest in a smaller market club such as ourselves. I can understand the AFL saying no but to act like asking the question is a dodgy tactic by the MFC is wrong.

erm, are you sure on that, thought schooling cut of was as long as it is before the start of the school year.

I finished yr 12 at 17 (in Vic) and wasn't skipped ahead or anything, nor was I alone in being a 17yr old graduee,

Yes, quite sure. Does your birthday happen to be in November, December or January by any chance? If so, that's why you finished school at 17. If you'd attended school in WA, you would have finished school the year before when you were 16.

Edit: Anyone in WA, please feel free to make me look really silly and correct me :-)

Perfect example why hogan shouldn't play this year. dont agree with it. Just let him learn his trade, develope his body and strength and get his confidence up and going. I can bet my left plum he will make a sudden impact next year and hit the ground running if he is developed through the VFL this year

now that is a whole different argument

first you would have to find a new elite competition for 18-20yo's to keep them in the game and primed

we haven't and never will have the us college system

will never happen and anyway as you said its (even more) arbitrary

Wouldn't wish that we did have a 'college system.'

Gets them to think about their careers outside of footy then that would be great.

I know it will not happen, but I do believe that we will naturally move to drafting older and older draft 'classes.'

The kids aren't ready for it, and I think that we will soon have around 40 exceptional kids drafted each year and the rest will be recycled players or mature age players.

My daughter's 15 in August and she's in year 9 so she'll turn 18 in year 12, but if her birthday was in Feb she'd be turning 17. Birthdays before June something you start school Feb that year after June? and you start the following (Feb) year. Really don't know if that helps :)

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
