The difference a year makes

Just pondering what we lost in votes and goals from last year

The players departed this year contributed 56 goals, with green scoring 19 and Rivers 13 the main ones

Going by the Herald suns votes (5-1) we have only lost 6 votes Rivers 4 and Green 2.....with Jones,Mcdonald,Grimes and Trengove heading up the most votes

Admittedly we did,t get many.....but I reckon we will have replaced the ones we have lost by a hugh margin....Thoughts......

Green was finished, Rivers is replaceable, Brownlow votes mean nothing.

I think you missed my point Sloonie....

I don't think we lost anything, I think Watts will claim River's position long term and eventually that will be an improvemnet on the indicators you mentioned.

Dawes will cover the gap that Green has left and then some. We will be more potent forward and at least break even in the back line. Overall, Green and Rivers aside I feel everyone of our omissions were dispensable and we will become more competitive for that sooner, rather than latter.

THAT was the point I was trying to make.....I just put a few stats to back it....

How long do you think it will take the new team to gel? I have a feeling it will take at least 6 or so games. Maybe by round 10 we get a clearer picture of what this new team can be capable of.

I think it will be sooner rather than later.......The experience we have added around the ground will help and the side will settle quite quickly...

i've booked flights for the round 3 clash with WCE (with a heap of west coast mates), so hoping the team is up and about by then! If they're not, it'll be a long day!

Our forward 6 will take some time to gel, we basically have a brand new forward line and at the moment 2 keys aren't training with the main group with Clark not playing much footy until round one. The back half of last year our forward line was Blease, Rivers, Howe, Green, Sellar, Magner, compared to Blease, Clark, Dawes, Pederson, Howe, Tapscott, I think we have our goals covered. Our back six looks OK, our difference has to be our midfield, we need Sylvia, Trengove, Jones, Mckenzie, Grimes to really start to dominate games and control the middle, Toumpas and Viney will certainly improve our midfield from last year but the core players that have been on the list for 3 + years need to be the difference.

Don't forget to stop using terms like "Carltank" and " Meth Coast" when you do.
i can't stop now. It is engrained into me.

Worsfold in his White Coat

Carlton just being Carltank. How i loath and detest that lousy stinking organization.

I'll stop now.

I turn 50 this year. That is all i can cope with...

Way to late for me....Been there done that....Life just begins at 50.......

I have a gut feeling you may be a year early.

In 2013 we will still be a ways behind WCE.

lessthan a eight goal loss will be a good result IMO.

I think we will be better than that....esp at the MCG.

If we can hang with WC up until halftime DemonWA I'd probably just excuse myself out the backdoor as your feral mates start warming up. Still too early to hope to knock off one of the big dogs (of course, upsets can happen) but I expect this team to still get crushed once and a while by the big boys- and that's fine right now.

Cant say i expect to see us win, unlike 2010 when i went over expecting to see a win and we still lost!

I think we'll get some momentum up for the back half of the season.

I reckon it will take us a month of games to get every one on the park together, & the next 7 games to find some good form.

We have dispensed with most (if not all) of those who didn't 'buy in' to the Neeld way, as well as some who were either past their UBD, or were unlikely to ever cut it at the top level.

We seem to have gained some forward structure, some mid-field (and other) depth, and (hopefully) a smattering of class.

Most importantly, we seem to have added significantly to our stocks of:

  • leadership and experience; and
  • team players who will not die wondering.

We are currently in the process of ramping up fitness levels to something much closer to the required level.

It bodes well, and I'm chomping at the bit for Sunday, 31 March.

I'm sick of eating sh!t sandwiches week- in, week-out ........ salad will make a very pleasant change.

Rivers and Green are massive losses, paticularly in maturity and leadership. It was a shame to see them both go in the way they did.

Green was cooked in 2011...he just couldn't read the ball anymore..

It was time..

Why not carry this further and look at how many Demonland Player of the Year votes we have lost. I'd be quite interested since that relates directly to posters' opinions of the players in question.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
