Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Nurse duped by Australian radio DJs found dead in suspected suicide

THREE days after being duped by Australian radio presenters during a royal phone prank, a London nurse has been found dead after an apparent suicide.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, a mother of two, was unable to be revived after being found unconscious at a nurses' accommodation block near London's exclusive King Edward VII Hospital at 9.35am (local time) on Friday.

Police said the death was "unexplained" and have launched an investigation, but "the death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage".

Her husband and two children have been informed.

...... what a sad disgraceful exhibition of our current Australian way of Life! if we are real these radiopeople will lose they're jobs, as will they're bosses.

I'd like to see them charged with breaking some Law.

it was a joke that went wrong. I am sure no one in their wildests dreams thought someone would die.

I would check what the UK Press wrote initially after the prank before doing anything else.

Pranks are pranks WYL, and somethings are way over the top. chasing stories via prankish behaviour of people in they're hospital bed, is way over the top. And a prank usually ends in some shared laughter with prankster & the prank'ee.

I'm one of the most irreverent people I know in todays world, & I cringe at the level our media people will go to to feel popular. Casting off all of OUR most valued morals & values in order for a cheap laugh.

This is an example of incredibly cruel behavior with no sharing of the prank with the innocent party, & absolutely no responsibility shown by the perpetrators.

They should be condemned for this [censored] poor effort.

As should they're bosses, sackings should follow this.

i am not codoning what happened at all but phone pranks have been around for over 50 years. The fact the poor girl took the call and went with it is the crux.

She must have been ashamed beyond belief & the UK Press would never let it go.

The announcers have been taken off air...

So you've got to the point where people can make a huge prank, thats potentially damaging to the other person, without at the decency to tell them they've been had, & have a laugh with them as some sort of decompression.

We've had too many media from sandilands to jones, & many others.

it's time for the media organisations control body to come down hard on the perpetrators of what is essentially personal abuse, this time ending tragically.

An example has to be Set.

# Edit: This is the lacking humanity that drives the bad attitudes that has been eroding our morals & values that protect us all, & is undermining our safety on the streets & helps to cause our kids feel bad about themselves & our society, thru causing distrust in our society. This inturn turns into self destructive behaviours like drug taking.

Distrust is a killer & generally makes the whole community look sideways at one another. This is the unraveling of our communities, setting people against one another.

It has to stop

Did you actually hear their voices? It was down right the worst impersonation I have ever heard in my life.

I'm honestly not joking.

I'm not condoning what they did, but FFS you think any one would have some common sense and ask:

1) Why does the Queen sound like an Australian bogan?

2) Would the Queen actually pick up the phone and call? I'm sure her PA would have at least initatiated the phone call and directed it to the right place, then pop the Queen on.

EDIT: I have deleted a harsh statement. Just read that the nurse has commited suicide.

People need to start to take responsibilites for their actions - both the nurses, doctor and radio DJs. They are all idiots.

This is how i see it. The impersonation was terrible, so i doubt the announcers thought they would get more than a 5 second response before the phone is slammed down. When that didn't happen it became funny.

You have to wonder how ahe thought it was the real deal?

Aussies will always try their luck with humor.

Guedo Hatsis was the last i remember. His CD was a beauty, all prank calls...

Matt Tilly did a bunch of good ones for Fox 101.9 in the mornings. This is probs what they were trying to replicate.

It wasnt indended to be malicious, I cant help but feel that people forget that they have to look at an act from the intentions of the people doing it.

That being said and done, the moment they realise that they werent going to hang up they should have hung up.

Its a shame that the nurse committed suicide, a mother of 2 and has a husband.

WYL did this actually go to air? I heard the start (when they were practicing their voices) but did the details actually go to air??

I cannot say for sure. I do not listen to the station.

But usually those phone calls are made live to air (7 second delayed)

Tony Martin & Mick Molloy did them daily. It is very sad but i do not blame the announcers, they would have been waiting for the nurse to crack up laughing. I wish she had, i really do.

Ditto.

I cant help but feel that after all the issues that radio has had over the past couple of years that this delay should be increased.

OR if you are going to perform something like this, at least pre record it a couple of minutes earlier and then play it.

Might have made a big difference.

I did, but to an honest & Innocent person, who believes in peoples integrity, then they're not playing by the same Rule Book.

they should have informed the girl about the joke in an inclusive way at best.

they let her hang, & probably the first she new about it was from being reprimanded by her boss???

Now a nice person has died thru greed for adulation & arrogance. & smartarse ratings...

Its the innocent who pay the hurt, & this needs to be turned ass about. the bosses must be sacked for not implementing a code of behaviour. and the board should stand down themselves for a better model.

this sarcastic type humour is caustic, & corrodes our culture. & imo is a reflection of our inner sadness & a helplessness to change where we've gone to, as a society. out of frustration...

Sorry but what has greed got to do with it?

It was an aussie joke that sadly someone did not get.

Even after it happened she should have laughed it off. Done the breakfast TV circuit, Letterman, even Leno as a last resort.

Rudeboy could have knocked up a quick book.

She didn't have to end it all, that was her choice deeply sad as it is.

The greed is the driver for them doing whatever for they're careers, foreboding any semblance of moral fiber.

They will do whatever it takes, to get the ratings they want to survive the ratings battle. and they're Ego's are ahead of the conscience.

so the sponsors are in this as well.

so deeply sad means we can all go & exploit underage kids in sth asia.

we can all go and drink & drive to our hearts content.

What about the misrepresentations of what they did.

the bishops are all OK as they turned a convently blind eye to sexual predation, as its was just a deeply sad but well meant play.

sorry, I think you've lost your way WYL in all this. My mum had a disability thru severe polio, but she kept her integrity, honesty, humility, & love for all. She was very godly without being a churchgoer or a bible basher.

She was just a very good person not needing to prove anything to anybody other than just showing love.

she didn't learn to seek power as a way of giving in to her obvious disability even thru people staring & pointing. she kept her faith in goodness.

We could All take a page or 2 from her book.

These shock jock antics have been around for a while and I dont think permeate from one board, but as an industry as a whole - so getting rid of one board, would not solve the issue.

We wont know all the reasons why she committed suicide, there might have been other factors (we all know nurses operate in one of the most stressful and tough industries), but I have no doubt that the prank call was the major catalyst.

I think what most people have agreed is that the radio dj's intentions were good, and that this was intended for a joke. HOWEVER, when the joke clearly didn't arise they should have ended it.

The nurses suicide was her choice, and a sad one at that. Nothing is ever that bad, there were other nurses involved and what what I have read the details disclosed were not life threatening or extremely bad - this can be seen my Prince Charles joking about the prank call to some Australian journalists yesterday.

In my mind the most appropriate action has been taken, and to further prevent is by making a greater delay on 'live air' and for these types of skits have them pre-recorded.

I don't think this is a corrosive trait for our culture. Racism yes, a joke gone wrong no.

you are not alone there! Fred Hollows??

Met him once...superb man.

In terms of media and getting rubbish off the air Packer seemed to have a fairly good handle on content.

My favourite story was the Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos where he watched a little bit of it and called up saying "Get that [censored] off the air!" and it was pulled immediately.

[in regards to Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos]

"Kerry Packer, the owner of the Nine Network at the time, was informed of the show's content by friends while at a dinner. He tuned in to watch the show, which was being transmitted on TCN-9, and was so offended by its content that he phoned the studio operators and shouted, "Get that s**t off the air!" Within minutes, the series was pulled.[3] After the break, the Nine Network announced that it was unable to continue airing the show, allegedly due to 'a technical problem', and aired re-runs of Cheers immediately afterwards to fill in the remaining airtime. Bert Newton commented in 2008, "[The message was true]; Technically it's very difficult to keep a show on air with Mr. Packer on the phone, yelling at you.""

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
