WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRIS DAWES

Recommended Posts

Hoping player x + pick 39 gets it done, would really prefer to keep pick 4 for a gun and pick 20 for a slider if possible. Funny how a guy who has played so few games recently and can't stay in the 1's (based on earlier posts) is now almost a 1st rounder

He's played 72 games and won a flag. He's pretty handy, and contracted...

Maybe pick 20 and Martin for Dawes and the pies second rounder to flip to North for Pedersen.

As for Gumby, just no.

By the way Dawes's physicality puts him ahead of Martin. He's also played and trained with a Premiership club as has Byrnes. I like what I'm seeing and am presuming Taggert, Strauss and Blease are going to improve, or that's what the club is thinking. We've also got the GWS guys coming out of contract next year to buy us the last pieces of the puzzle.

Dawes in our side will be just as effective as when James Sellar plays forward. Will do some good things but will struggle to dominate. At least Sellar has some cred as a defender and is Dawes equal as a pinch hitter in the ruck. If he is the big hulk we hoping he will be then why did none of the big clubs want him? Collingword preferred the aging "hands of stone" to him.

There were 3 other clubs circling this morning....i actually thought the Dogs had finalized the deal so i am most suprised...

Many people forget....Neeld Coached Dawes & Leigh Brown played alongside him...So they would know what they are getting.

Yeah it's all doom and gloom isn't it?

The thing that I like about Dawes is his hunger for contest - even when not taking marks he is tackling, chasing, contesting, shepherding. He didnt stop doing these things this season- he just wasnt clunking marks like the previous two years. (Excepting Clark) we have a similar type of footballer at the MFC called...ummm... called ...ummm..ok -we just dont.

exactly, if he is doing all of these positive things he will begin to have things turn his way and we should have a good pick up! Everyone at collingwood say he has a brilliant work-rate and we need people like this and it will create a really positve feel around the club. It is really only a matter of time for Dawes before he returns to his form of 2010-11 and he should be a great pick-up :)

All clubs that are struggling and clutching at straws BTW. There must have been a substantial sweetener.

Neeld was open about using Dawes connection with Leigh Brown and himself to get him over the line. All the info was that he was Bulldog bound. I am super impressed how the Club has handled the drafting process so far.

ADC just try and look on the bright side of life otherwise you are just destined to be a misery guts. Enjoy the ride and look forward to what the future holds for our great Club.

I agree that they are similarly talented but Dawes will work twice as hard as Sellar and make it to twice as many contests.

Dawes down one side of the ground and pederson down the other gives us two gorillas that should crash packs and at least halve contests. We'll be much more bearable to watch than when we were kicking to Martin, Dunn, Bate, Petterd, or relying on Howe to take mark of the year every time we bring it out of defence.

They should also help Watts development through training, and Watts getting the 3rd or 4th defender if he spends time forward.

Give the guy chance before sinking the slipper ADC, otherwise it's just pessimism for pessimism's sake.

Everything about Walsh screams "[censored]".

It's just posturing. The Pies will take pick 20 if we sit tight. It's more than fair.

When the deck chairs stop shuffling and elan and results start appearing in that order I will ditch my cynicism. Have heard too many tiresome excuses and false promises that justify our lameness past, present and perhaps future. As the old saying goes "show me the money?" Fortunately I have many real positives in my life to be cheerful about. And many other supporters feel like me but not many would waste their time here.

I'm not averse to getting him but I hope we don't give up pick 20 for him. We need midfielders and I hope we have picks 4 & 20 to use on them.

Very true. 2 or 3 hulking forwards will be usless without quality supply. Need to bolster defence too. And where the basic skills that have gone missing for years coming from?

I don't think the Club made excuses this year especially the players. In a way there were plenty of external reasons which added to the abominal year that we had. I also don't believe that the changes that have been made both during the year and with this draft period that the Club is "shuffling deck chairs". There are major player changes some of which it will be sad to lose ie Rivers and some others who previously would still be at the Club (Moloney) have been given the chop. These changes have been made by a strong Club that is endeavouring to change a culture and ethic that has weighed us down for years. That is not moving things around to pretend that changes are underway. If you expect major results next year you will be disappointed. We will though be a harder and more competitive Club than we have been for some time. Can't you be excited about the prospect of Jack V,Dawes, Pederson and Hogan waiting in the wings. Roo supporters are furious that the Club have let Pederson go. Neeld and Co have come up trumps so far. With Neeld, Craig and Misson there are no excuses for poor development of the younger brigade. Personally I can't wait for the season to start.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
