I'm not fussed about whether it's played or not. But if it's to be played is it possible to have a better version? The current one is, I think, Julie Anthony's but I believe it's been digitally sped up so it now sounds like it's being played in a hurry just to get it over and done with.

Play it with respect, or not at all.

This is the stupidest thread during a period when there is a thread with "gysberts to be shot out of a cannon" in its title...

I would like the song performed live, but to insinuate it has no place or that its embarrasing disgusts me.

What else embarasses you? The flag? 1 minutes silences? People wearing poppy's or rosemary sprigs?

You would probably prefer a catchy hit from LMFAO or nickleback to be performed because they're more trendy?

Pull your head in and realise that history didn't begin with the invention of the internet and that "embarassing" song and what it represents means a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of people

Well said. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Any suggestions Sue ? Surrounded or encircled won't get the job done :)

It's not the word 'girt' or any synonym of it that irks my precious sensibilities. The line does not follow on the sentiments of the preceding one. It appears to be thrown in to fill up a line and make a rhyme. It is geographically accurate, but that information, if needed, should be in another verse or dropped.

While I make a claim to appreciate poetry, I'm no poet so sadly I don't have any suggestions. But the line should follow on from the sentiments about being young, free and potentially wealthy. Or it should introduce the theme of the subsequent lines about nature's gifts. Not just throwing in an almost random geographical fact.

It does follow, We've golden soil and wealth for toil... It's both describing our land and the opportunity to do well from it. Girt by sea is also describing our land, I don't see how that fails to follow?

yep... I know that...you know that.....and many others see it too.

Apparently only poets can tell that the two lines are unrelated...

And how on earth is it disrespectful to sing along with it?

This thread is bizarre.

Outdated tune, where's the pitbull version already ffs.

In any case, I feel "girt" is an under-utilized word. I'm going to work it into a conversation tomorrow. I'll let you know how I go!

You are a F.. en turkey Jacko!

It is the National Anthem.

And unless you come from another country that doesn't want to adopt our traditions.

Then Shut the F'en up.

Because the soil is introduced to talk about wealth for toil. It is there for a reason. The 'girt sea' just hangs, connects to nothing.

Fair enough if you disagree with my point. But I could live without the abuse from BB.

Yes a bizarre thread, but perhaps better than speculating on 10th round picks at this dead time of the year.

Let's have a vote on who wants to bring back 'God Save the Queen'.

You'll be the most popular person in the office. Absolutely girt with friends.

How to successfully undermine your own argument in one simple sentence. Congratualtions.

How to successfully miss the point.

I said it's not necessary. It isn't. The roar at the end is enjoyable, and as a tradition I have no problem keeping it, but at the same time I wouldn't lose sleep if the AFL decided not to play it at every final, because it's not needed or necessary.

Understand? No, you probably don't.

Understand? No, you probably don't.

surprises me not you missed it completely.

as to the lyrics and rationale of coherency and appropriateness

We've golden soil and wealth for toil;... ( A reference to the land, its riches and the nature of lifes rewards )

Our home is girt by sea; ( a reference to the land in context of its nature, in ...nature

Our land abounds in nature's gifts...( a reference to land in all its meanings )

and you know what...its a song about a LAND .. go figure

yep no consistency or relevance at all !!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
