Cheque Book Drafting MFC

Sadly you might not like this thread - But have a feeling we need to get the cheque book out this year of all years.

Personally, think many of the Free Agents are either not interested or past their prime. We need to seek players coming into their prime and pay for that.

Quite a few kids at other clubs are out of contract want to come home and if we dont strike soon I'm not sure our "fragile" supporter base can handle it.

Hope we can be hyper-aggressive and fill our list with youth on the way up. You would make this blokes year by just getting them - hang the expense, you would get no complaints from me.

Cheque book drafting is alright by me.

Best of luck boys

But who do we throw the cheque book at? It's all well and good to make the claim we need to throw some money around but there doesn't seem to be any players who are worth it right now. We can front end some contracts to get up to the TPP and then save that money for the following season.

I think we will add a variety of players to our list who will stand for everything that Neeld does - hard working players who are fit, can spread from a contest and stick to the game plan no matter what. There are guys out there who are not A listers who fit that mould and I'm sure the club is chasing them. Outside of Cloke and Goddard though, whom we won't get, there doesn't seem to be a big name player either out of contract or willing to leave their club to come to Victoria.

Can you trade players for cash only or does there have to be a pick or player exhange?

Not talking FA, just regulation trades

oh yeah... dont mean to be a misery guts... but who ya gonna buy ??

Good question - maybe more look to target a particular profiled players that fit a fixed criteria.

Players Age - 20-23 Drafted around - Picks 10-30 Played 20-50 games at not getting the opportunities they deserve. Sure we are going to get a few wrong, and Im sure some around here will single them out and turn them into whipping boys, but we must just accept the good with the bad, but our record out the TAC cup is not good.

Seeking to trade our picks 20-40 over say 3 seasons in a row to get these type of players.

Mitch Clark came out of left field and his a beauty, I'm shore the boys are keeping a lid on it till it all starts on October 1st.

We should wait till then and see what happens.

Our interest came out of left field - Clark made it clear he wanted to leave Brisbane. While I'm sure we have our fingers in many pies it doesn't seem that "big fish" is really out here for us on the market this yet, but more than happy to be proved wrong!

I love this thread.

Bloody hell, this list has to turn around quickly.

Bring in some hard nuts with professionalism and combative spirit.

I'm all for it!

I think we'll have the chequebook open for a few years at least.

I don't mind getting a couple of 28 - 30 Yr types to help the standards this year.

Next year I'd hope for some around the 25 Yr age group.

I'm certain that is the clubs number one plan hence the fundraiser and the big offer to a guy like David McKay. I would be very suprised if we didn't land 2 or 3 good mature players we will pay overs as we are not an attractive club but we appear to have a good sales team that has proven them selves with last years best signing in Mitch Clarke. The club would have had their people talking to players managers all year and some that havnt been mentioned before fare chance we may get at least one suprise! I can see us getting a mix of good young talent and mature quality players. I think we have a decent core group to work with and it appears we are finally not prepared to hang on to the NQR's I like many have thought we had been down this path and should be well on the way to pushing for a GF well reality is we should be, I'm not falling for the bad recruiting talk its almost certain it's player development / leadership. This is now becoming the most important part of any football club hope we are getting this right first and foremost. Anyway I'm glad the season is finally over and I am now more so looking forward to a brighter future!

This club must get at least 2 credible pickups....let's be honest, the list smells like rotten fish. The club needs credibility at breakneck speed.

In the trade period a player or pick must exchange. In the draft players can nominate a salary & the club is obliged to meet those demands. You do have the pre-season draft where a contract can be signed or at least an agreement reach between player and club, no picks need to be exchanged. Rookie draft is pure pick normally on very low minimum base salary around 52 K then plus match payments.

I reckon the 23-30 for us is too old & a wasted pick. If they are free ie Free agents you would consider but again not this year. Prefer to be a net loser of free agents when you are down the bottom, as you move up the ladder and more into contention then you top up with 28-30 for a fixed short-term role.

Wasted pick, the Older ones would be pretty much F/A's..

so a late pick is all. OK, we may miss a pre season pick, or we move an extra player out of the list.

23 too old? Our issues are lack of experience, lack of aggression & attitude, & lacking body mass in our players, so I think some older players (sorry you 23 Yr olds out there) is Just what We need. To add to our young draftee intake.

There is value to be found in players who simply can't get a regular game with their side. Look at Richmond with Houli as a classic example. I think we could see some real value in pursuit of guys like Gumbleton and Byrnes who are more or less stuck being depth players at their clubs. I know there is an issue with Byrnes in his age, but if we got three years out of him I'd be very happy. In both cases the chance at more game-time has to be a factor, so we may not have to throw too much money at them.

I would love us to bring in a big fish if we could manage it. A contract similar in scope to Clark's could be a big lure to some players. I have n idea who might be out there or who we might be interested in, but we should be finding ourselves with plenty of room in the cap so it should be easy to free up the cash.

No problems I just think if you are 23 years old + (except ruckmen) and you are on the trade table you fit into two major categories a/ NQR & b/ Chasing a club in a premiership window. You normally have played 50+ games & have pretty exposed AFL form.

I would prefer us finding players on the way up with there best still in front of them. Just dont think we need the "NQR" and we are not in a premiership window in the near future.

Suppose in used car terms I reckon we look for a near new car with very low km's on the clock yet they are broken in. Yes I would pay overs to get that.

But I accept there are always exceptions to any "rules".

So what's Travis Cloke then? A NQR or chasing a flag?

Your sweeping generalisations are wrong. There are plenty of players out there in that 23-30 category who can help us, it's just a matter of finding the right ones.

Reckon Travis wont go a club like us because we are no where near finals. Not sure I agree with the word "plenty" in terms of being avaliable & willing to come. But I agree there are always exceptions to the "rules".

I don't think Cloke will come to us either, and I don't believe we will actually pursue him, but there are players out there who can help us in that age bracket. Mitch Clark hasn't gone too badly since he arrived at the club either. I think that the clubs short sightedness with Bailey on board is what hurt us, as we put ALL our faith in the just developing kids and we didn't widen our vision to include some experienced, hard bodied players who could also help the club moving forward. I don't think Neeld will make that mistake.

Yeah I agree we put to much faith in the draft - not sure that was out of choice. But I just reckon we are not in position to get the good ones with a bit more experience. Last year with Clark yeah it was good - but again this year we only won 4 games & clear we are entering a rebuild - I would have thought minimum 3-4 years away.

I know the chances of it happening are as high as me impregnating Scarlett Johansson, but I'd throw everything we own at Jimmy Bartel. What more can he do at Geelong? He's won premierships, a Brownlow and Norm Smith, etc, etc. The Cats have to be on the slide, we are already at the bottom so could pass them on the way up? Would Jimmy want to come on this journey that Neeld is trying to take us on?

A player of Jimmy's qualities both on and off the field would attract 5000 new members.

Agreed! I feel the same about Buddy Franklin next year when he is out of contract, we should be throwing everything at him.

If players are only coming to the club for a brown bag full if money what aort of effort can we really expect from them??

A couple of decent players who have been injured and cant get back into their successful teams(russell, young, byrnes), maybe a couple who have been starved of opportunities (moore, stevens, speight) and the go to the wafl, sanfl, vfl (and get some 23-26year olds who will break their bones and bleed red and blue for the opportunities they have been offered

if we can get toumpas, kennedy and stringer with our first round picks then we will have most of our outside run for the nextvdecade with a bit if luck, and therefore we should be looking to "buy" a bit more grunt and muscle.

Having said all that, would give jyst about all we've got after 20whatever our second rounder is for a shot at picking up charlie dixon or tommy lynch

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
