Oliver Wines

So Wines has been offered a two year extension on his contract, at 400k a year and not signed.

If we get a priority pick, we should trade one of our top picks to Port for Wines.. And give them a player too..

Wants to come back to Victoria, I'd be happy for this to happen..

I have a feeling he will resign with them unfortunately, would be about perfect if he and prestia decided they wanted to join us over the off season

Bloke is a mad Carlton supporter. His old man told Wayne Hughes on the day of the draft that he'd be back in Vic within 2 years, wouldn't sign a contract extension and only wants to go to the Blues. His old man has been emailing the club during the season re-iterating this is still the case.

Doubt we'll ever see the bloke in a Melboure jumper.

I was reluctant to open this thread - I thought it would probably be from one of our "supporters" bemoaning the "fact" that we got the wrong guy, "again".

I will repeat, it is not possible to compare Wines playing in (what started the season as ) a strong team with a strong midfield, with Toumpass playing in a very very poor team with only one quality mid. Totally unfair and unreasonable to even try to compare the output of performances of the two, at this point.

But yes, it would be great if we could somehow lure him to MFC - of course winning a few games and playing with a bit of passion would be encouraging.

I think this is a lot like the people claiming that Hawthorn shouldn't have taken Hodge. It was probably the strongest top 3 ever seen in a draft that year and all three have had successful careers. Hodge may have taken a little longer to find his feet at AFL level than Judd, but nobody at Hawthorn would ever suggest that they should have gone the other way. I firmly believe that you have to wait until the end of their career to judge whether a player was a good selection. These two have barely started theirs.

Edit: Oh God, looking at our drafting back then. Luke Molan! Did he even play a game for us? The only one we got any use from was Miller at 55. Shocking drafting.

Toumpas will be a star. I'm not worried about him. At all.

I am extremely worried at this stage!!

HAVE we got it wrong yet again!!

How could you not Draft an inside grunt on baller for a "Outside Reciever"

when out greatest need has been , inside grunt???

In fact I'll say this Oliver Wines is better than Jack Viney!!

BETTER!!

Our recruiting strategy so poor as per usual has netted what looks like a skillful player but point is...

Who is going to get it out to him to show what WHAT, he actually has got!

"Toumpas will be a star"????

Cheezus I bloody hope so!

BUT

Wines will win the rising star

AND

We do not have the luxury of the Neeld 5 year rebuild!

Anything else??

No question!

No question!

O'Meara will win the rising star comfortably, Wines may finish second, a distant second.

Now, G Smith, not sure if this question has been asked of you?

But given that "Hindsight" is a great thing

Who would you have drafted at No 4 ??

Our inside ball on the weekend was good without Viney who will be the future inside grunt you speak of. Our spread and skills are deplorable yet you cant see why we would take Toumpas. Wines has been better early but has petered off. Toumpas has not been as good as I expected early but will improve with games.I saw enough of him last year to know he is quality. I still think we have done the right thing. I am amazed I haven't found the "we should have taken Vlaustin thread yet".

Toby Greene was great last year but less so this year; that happens with a lot of young kids and they take a couple of years to get back to their first year's form.

We used to call it second year blues.

actually we need a Cameron Ling type run with mid, big body...

I hoping for Taggert to be an inside magnet.

... immediately, we need a gun Leader, like yesterday... I'd go after Sam Mitchell free agency, & offer him $M1.8 over 3Yrs, front ended... $800, $650, $350,

I would've thought about Stringer from the dogs if you wanted inside midfielder. When he gets fit enough he will be an absolute beast, make you ask Ollie who?

Me too, very similar player to Ricciuto. Strong, quick, forward/mid, goal kicker. Much better player than Wines and was the steal of the draft.

Viney wanted to play for Melbourne

Wines wanted to play with his best mate Jack Viney

Melbourne made another BAD draft decision.

Gysberts, Cook, Morton, Bate, Maric and some more yet to be finalised.

But didn't someone say earlier that Wines wants to play for Carlton and nobody but Carlton? I'm confused, which informed opinion do I believe?

A tad early to judge Fence but I'm comfortable with Jimmy fttb.

Ollie is a talented lad though.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
