Doesn't seem like its gonna be my SC year.

I've habitually bought players who were flying (Stanton, Lewis & Cox ) only to watch them slump as soon as in my side.

Didn't buy others others expecting them to slump (Beams) or get injured (Watson) but haven't.

Held on to some waiting for them to find form (Goodes & Broughten) but haven't.

Sold Pendlebury cause he broke his freakin' leg . Came back 4 weeks later as good as gold.

Franklin on the bench for the last month , who knows when he'll be back and now this.

As with the real stuff , ya gotta have some luck in SC.

At least 95% of other coaches are feeling the same as we are so it's not all doom.

So who is it to be, Marat, Marcus, Swanny or Big Cox ?

umm... must be a repeat offender.

My squeezes son was in Tramps two or three weeks ago-Dane Swan was there at about 2am drinking and at 4am none other than Brock McLean doing the same.

I have no problem with AFL players drinking. It's not illigal and if it doesnt effect their on field form then there is no real problem in my eyes.

You may have no problem with it DemonWA (I certainly have no problem with it either), but if the club has a rule that there will be no late night escapades during the season, then they have no option but to punish the offender. After all, they are paying their players a sh!tload of money (members' money) and require them to be at peak fitness for the entires season... and lack of sleep/over indulgence, is not the best way to maintain peak levels of fitness.

It was a bit rich of the Age to say this: "His suspension adds to a bad week for the AFL."

How exactly does it reflect badly on the AFL? A man in his 20's went to a pub and had some drinks. Big deal.

Let me think... one guy who happens to be one of Western Bulldogs best performing players found semi conscious with a small amount of "E" in his possession, followed by a brownlow favourite being suspended for two weeks by his own club (who won't give any further details) for being out in the wee small hours and later dobbed in by a team mate for the state he was in at practice?

If I was the AFL, I might just be a little concerned over this kind of publicity for the game.

The first, you'll have no arguments from me. Was a silly thing, and the AFL are right to be worried about this. But the second? Swan didn't do anything illegal. He broke a club rule, and was rightly punished by his CLUB.

I fail to see how his actions reflect badly on the AFL.

In effect, the club maintaining silence over what transpired is, in a way, making it as bad as the Doggies case, because Joe Public will think the worst (why would a club dump a Brownlow favourite for two matches heading towards finals time?) and rightly or wrongly, by extension the AFL will be criticised for not reigning in this sort of behaviour.

swanny claimed he didn't drink that night

but his teammate observed at training that he was acting strangely

if it wasn't drink could it have been something else?

I can't think of a single reason why the club would release information that another player dobbed him in. It's got trouble written all over it.

I hope Swanny is [censored] and wants out. I'd look the other way while he did whatever he wanted with his free time if he got 40 touches a week in the Red & Blue.

And think about the marketing opportunities! We've always had a reputation as 'skiers' :)

What kind of world are we living in when a few drinks on a Sunday night lead to a two week ban. Pretty lame. Hopefully this, and the Cloke decision derails Collingwood's season and window!

Legality has nothing to do with this issue.

I have a problem with being out at ridiculous hours of the morning drinking alcohol if you are professional athlete. This is a profession these boys have chosen and are paid handsomely for - part of the return is that players present themselves in the BEST physical shape they can.

Point me at any Sports medicine professional that will tell me that staying at 2am drinking (irrespective of how many) does not detract in any way from being physically at your best.

Its not about only about form - its also about a team rules. I am a one pot screamer (I wear it as a badge of honour) as opposed to my girlfriend who could drink Demonland under the table. So do clubs make two rules ? Ms Nutbean- go out and make merry as it has no impact on your form but Mr Nutbean, no going out for you young man.

Team rules are there for a reason.

If you chose AFL as a profession then abide by the standards and rules required. You want to go to Tramps to 2am in the morning and have a drink or two - fine- don't be an AFL footballer. There are choices.

A world where you are paid in excess of $500K a year to be an elite athlete presenting yourself in the best condition you can.

Well Swanny has never done that.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
