Primus - A warning sign to Neeld

It took Primus just under 2 years to fall on his sword.

I can't see neeld getting too much more than that for a similar scenario to happen.

Let's hope for all concerned that the result for 2013 improves.

Primus is Port Adelaide while Neeld an outsider. No more comment. Lets see out this season. 5 Wins will be a tick (not a tock) for Neeld given all the circumstances and controversies of the year.

That said encouraging win v GCoast. Don't forget GC had a good win V Tigers recently. There were signs with Dees carrying the ball a little more and and looking for the spare man rather than continually bombing it long.

definitely not. there is some relevance to how a coach under contract can be discarded so easily. considering the result V Melbourne two weeks ago IMO Primus has been unfairly treated.

it's more a broad topic and can be taken in the context that anyone coaching a struggling team is not safe. for me as I keep saying over and over Neeld is safe no question.

Are you saying that if a coach has his side sitting in the lower echelons for a few years that he's going to come under pressure?

The persistance of some on this forum has changed my mind on Neeld. RR's poll nearly had me convinced I was right in supporting him but given we only won by 42 points yesterday, I think we should sack him and just let Bandicoot, Hardnut and Tonatopia, et al share the coaching job. We'll be better off then, won't we?

I think Primus had a problem because of inconsistency, Port have won some games and shown some form but they have also lost some games they probably thought they should have won. They beat the Saints, North, Gold Coast, Carlton and Melbourne and I guess after showing that they can win some games against ok opposition early on, to lose to GWS would be unacceptable.

I think they are a better team than they have shown, I reckon the club thinks that too and as they are in a perilous position they need to get some wins on the board or they could fold.

According to Rucci (who isn't always right or righteous), PA just completed a review that basically said the FD was obsolete and should be revamped and that Primus is not at fault.

I reckon Neeld will revolutionise Melbourne and be the turning point in our history, he may not be the coach who takes us all the way (or he might) but he will change the way we approach football and for the better.

I agree. I have a feeling people will look back on his baptism of fire in 2012 and conclude that it was the making of him as a coach. It takes a certain type of character, a strength and a resilience, to find yourself in such an environment and not be knocked off your course.

I hold high hopes for the future with this guy.

In the last six years, we've tried five coaches. And we've won about five games.

Putting pressure on coaches and sacking them hasn't really done us much good recently; perhaps we'd be better trying a revolutionary tactic such as giving them a go.

You only need to look at Neelds influence on Jones to realise he'll be a good coach. Everything takes time, and Neeld should have plenty of time to get us up.

I think a certain Norman Smith had a pretty disastrous first year or so - maybe even the spoon, with a very young and inexperienced side. Then 7 consecutive GFs. I am sure most here (soothsayers excepted) would love even half that!

EDIT: Just checked my facts (though don't know which year TGNS started) - 1953 second last 3.5 wins: 1954 runners up having finished home and away fourth, and the dynasty began.

I am giving the benefit of the doubt to Neeld in his first year however there are definate 'tangible' KPI's that he must pass in 2013 in order not to face a Primus style exit.

5 wins is a minimum and at least 5 games where the losing margin is under 20 points.

No more than 1 loss over 100 points.

If these 'basic' KPI's are not met then I highly doubt a continuation of his contract will be given.

What kind of KPIs are those?

What is we have an injury curse as bad as the one that has taken our forward line to the medical clinic in Prahran that everyone goes to?

Neeld will be given time and I think that improvement should be expected but let's not be stupid enough to set hard and fast rules that tie us into ending (or even continuing) tenures.

They will have internal KPIs that will be important and you have to trust the board to make the right decision - if you don't trust the board well grab a few mates and go for election to the board - they are there for a reason.
